"Got up too quickly" for different cultures
Yesterday I stood up too quickly, got a bit lightheaded and had to sit down again. My Mexican hosts were concerned and I tried to explain.
At this point that I realized that "got up too quickly" is really not that descriptive and in fact borders on idiom. So now I'm curious what the Mexican Spanish idiom would be for that particular event (technically orthostatic hypotension). And while I'm at it I'm kind of curious about other cultures as well.
Please help me sate my cultural curiosity.
Pipe clamps are easy, how do I clamp pipe?
I need to sculpt the end of a 5/8" threaded steel rod. I'll be removing a lot of material, hopefully very precisely, and it would be good if the rod stayed absolutely rock solid while it's being worked on. Is there are standard way to do this?
Help me waste a day in central east Florida.
I'll be at Cape Canaveral an extra day and my initial plan of an introductory scuba dive (or just doing snuba) is not working out. I've already toured Kennedy Space Center and I'm looking for something scientific/geeky/bizarre to follow it up with. A little help?
Who profits from weddings?
If I'm expecting the traditional American wedding (registry, rehearsal dinner, lavish ceremony, reception) industry to expand over the next few years, where would I invest my money? My experience was mostly with local people, but I am sure there is some behemoth out there who's bread and butter is based on that style of people getting married.
Statistics on rocket launch postponements
I'm taking the nephew to Cape Canaveral for the scheduled June 19th Falcon launch and am trying to evaluate the chances of the launch actually happening that day. Obviously acts of god can't be predicted (although time of year could matter) but mechanical failures tend to follow some patterns. So, is there a canonical list somewhere of every rocket launch and a record of why it was postponed (and for how long) if so?
The Mathematics Of Time
So I have a few years to kill and I'd like to spend them fully understanding what physicists and mathematicians know about time. I'm not looking for any sort of summary, I want to understand the math from the bottom up. I once caught my father going through the Annus Mirabilis papers with a red pen; that's the sort of proficiency I have in mind.
Symbol identification
Can someone identify these symbols for me?
"We are a marketing team with very limited hardware experience."
The Kreyos Meteor Smartwatch has an extremely impressive feature set: Voice and gesture controls. Full integration with iOS, Android, and WP8. Shockproof, waterproof, accelerometer and activity tracker built in. Not a hard product to sell; In fact, it's a marketing person's dream. But after an extremely successful Indiegogo ($100,000 goal, $1.5 million raised) it was time to build the things, and they had no clue how to do it.
We give programmers what they need to get the job done: A door
There was a job advertisement to this effect about ten years ago. I don't remember if it actually said "a door", but there was a big picture of one in the middle of the page.
I'm looking for a copy but so far it has defeated my Google skills. Can someone help a cube dweller out?

End of an era
Compact medical supplies
For reasons too bizarre to go into, to get into a particular country a friend of mine needs to turn up at customs with 12 pounds of medical supplies. She's trying to minimize the volume and cost while at the same time making sure the supplies will be useful in a third world country.
From a size/weight/cost standpoint batteries are the best we've been able to come up with, but we're not sure they'll be acceptable. Any suggestions for things that are definitely medical supplies and fit the bill would be very welcome.
Finding your way around a WWII battlefield.
I will shortly be in Okinawa and am very interested in visiting the Maeda escarpment -- specifically the summit where Desmond Doss earned his Medal Of Honor. I'd like to arrive there confidently knowing I am in the right place and oriented such that I could find the referenced cliff with certainty. Is there a right way to gather the information I need?
Reliable company for reattaching cassette tape to spool.
I have a few cassette tapes that survived third class mail from Ohio to Sierra Leone and back in the early seventies, and then have been pretty much left alone for the last 40 years.
We have been digitizing them lately and on two of them the end of the tape has detached itself from the spool. I need someone who knows this stuff backwards and forwards to reattach them and/or digitize the content for us.
I remember fixing cassette tapes myself back when they were the preferred media, but I also remember having about a 5% failure rate. Way too high for this operation.
Company recommendations (US preferably) would be gladly received.
Need to make a weighted vest look less intimidating
I'm looking at purchasing a weighted vest for daily walks through the industrial park but frankly I think I'd look like I was planning to blow something up, or get shot at, or both.
I'm looking for suggestions for making it look as innocent as it is. Spray paint it white? Wrap it in reflective tape? Incorporate it into a Darth Vader costume?
Any and all ideas would be much appreciated.
Looking for a print online (speaking Italian would help)
I would love to purchase a print of this (warning: auto-playing music) but I can't locate a store online. I'm hoping someone with better Italian skills than me can find a clue somewhere that would lead me to a site.
Opthamologist Recommendation: Silicon Valley
It's time for me to consider strabismus surgery for myself and I'm hoping that someone here has experience doing this with an opthamologist in or around San Jose.
A little help?
A link for just the post.
I often find great posts I'd like to pass along to people but sometimes I'd rather not expose them to rough and tumble that is a Metafilter comment section.
Would it be possible to have a link that would just present the post without comments. Or failing that, a link with the comment section collapsed so someone would have to click to see it?
At least you know it's recording...
The end of Summer 2013 should see the release of Memoto, a wearable camera that takes a picture of what's in front of you every thirty seconds 24/7. Billed as an unobtrusive observer for lifebloggers, it is also being touted as a legal witness and an alibi provider. An interview that asks Memoto's CEO about privacy. (warning: interview filmed in shaky-cam)
Looking for a modern cover of "It's Only A Paper Moon".
I was in a shop today and heard a snippet of "It's Only A Paper Moon" played with what sounded like a synth beat. Unfortunately the clerks weren't able to help me figure out the artist and sorting through the 813 versions of the song on iTunes has proven slow work.
Does anyone know of a track like this? I may be off in my description a bit, but it definitely wasn't your standard jazz cover.
Finding a detailed history of the California Penal Code
I'm trying to find out how to find out when a particular item was added to the California Penal Code. In this particular case I'm interested in 12028.5, but I'd like to understand how to find such information in the future.

Vintage Jazz in Spanish?
I'm looking for a good sampling of 40s, 50s, and 60s Jazz in Spanish. I know Spain wasn't producing a lot of Jazz throughout those decades but there was obviously a lot of Cuban influence in American Jazz and I assume Latin American influence as well. Who were the Sarah Vaughans and Louis Primas who performed in Spanish, and more importantly where can I get my hands on their music?
