Please give full names before using acronyms
I support this post very much.

In my space news updates I try to spell out every acronym beforehand and link to a source. Man, there are a lot in that, er, space.

Oh, huh, I guess I do post a lot about that
What a good question.

Here are my leaders:
space (28) wwi (28) NASA (27) Mars (23) SpaceX (21) ESA (20) moon (19) Earth (17) ISS (17) AI (15)

Which surprised me a bit, since I spend most of my time in academia and futures.... spaces.

In my posts I try to put up a link (and a previously, where it exists) about an author, if the post focuses on one mail URL.

Too Many Links
Some of my posts, the updates on space exploration, are link frenzies.

I try to structure each one to make the items more accessible. Top level, that's by location in space (on the moon, around Jupiter, etc.). Within each header I sometimes divide stuff by other logics, like private vs public efforts.

I don't have a good sense of how these posts go over. They don't elicit much commentary, although what appears is positive and contains good… [more]

Dysk, I make those posts about once every month and a half.
Would a better plan for you be a series of smaller posts, then? One on a Russian orbital thing, then another on a Japanese asteroid mission, then later on one about a rocket startup, etc?

Very good description from Serene Empress Dork.

One more reason for its popularity: a relatively easy video editor, with a huge stack of music to add.

FanFare is confusing and scary. How can we make it not?
I've read some FanFare threads, but rarely commented. I've never posted, nor has it occurred to me to do so. Maybe it's because of being very cautious about posting in MetaFilter, or because of the culture on the blue of snark/jumping on topics.

Elsewhere, I post book reviews regularly to Goodreads and some to my blog. I just learned about Letterboxd and am thinking of writing movie reviews there. Maybe I should hit up FanFare.

It can be terrifying to make a Front Page post. Please be kind.
Thank you for this post, bondcliff.

It can indeed be daunting to post here. The likelihood of negative comments piling on is a strong disincentive. So is the chance of no comments or other reactions. Every week, it seems, I start to write up a post, then kill it. Either MeFites would piss all over it or just ignore the thing.

So I've learned to open the MeFi post box rarely, and to do so by donning mental armor, expecting to be shot at.

Looking forward to my new book appearing.
Now it's in the hands of the publisher, so there are edits etc to come. Unfortunately supply chains plus Amazon mean it won't appear until 2023.

"In this story I think that the helicopter is a closet."
will forever be more visible

The reverse is also true. So much has been deleted. In historiographical terms, a lot of primary sources are gone: the original story on Clarkesworld; the comment thread there; some of the comments on the MeFi thread; plenty of tweets; the Archive.org copy; potentially more.

Now we rely on secondary sources to learn about the event, if we know of them, if they did a good job of reproducing the originals.

A recent post illustrated this problem.

It was a single link to a Bloomberg site or minisite. Some readers complained that the page required a login. There was no other option in the post, nor did one appear for a while. (Kudos to Nelson for that.)

a paid for pony
Speaking personally, without addressing the macro or ethical issues:

This problem has irked me for a while. I hate running into paywalls when the post and comments don't warn me - and I'm in a position of relative privilege, being able to pay for some subscriptions while relying on a major university's library for some others.

When I hit a wall thanks to a MeFi post I try various ways of getting around it, most of which have been detailed in this… [more]

But my son, ah. School lit readings have driven him away from lit. He reports that they are uniformly dismal and he dreads each one.

My own passion for lit hasn't really crossed over for him. I suspect he thinks I'm a good person to talk with, but that my love for serious fiction is an eccentricity.

Metatalktailhour: Where do/don't you go?
We go for walks. My wife and son are especially fond of long strolls and try to do this daily. Me, eh, maybe 3x/week.

We live on the edge of a small city so most of the time we don't run into people. Which is good, because I'm terrified of them.

I can't stress this enough. Pre-COVID I was an extreme extrovert. I loved meeting people. For my work I got to visit universities, address crowds, and consult with groups, which always boosted me.… [more]

Vaccination Success Stories
My wife's a contact tracer, which means she got both shots last month.

I'm not an essential worker, but have one comorbidity (asthma) and am a university person, so... got one vaccination scheduled, then canceled, and another appointment tomorrow. Here's hoping.

My father's about 90 and riddled with comorbidities. He's in a rehab facility and has no idea when he'll get one.

My kids are young, nonessential (in this scheme), lacking comorbidities, and so have no idea.

Update here: just got my first shot (AstraZeneca) this afternoon.

It was a public-private partnership between our county and one medical clinic. Hundreds of people were in line during the hour I was there.

I shared this on Facebook and Twitter, and was deluged with stories from across the US of folks not getting appointments. California, New York, Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, Texas, etc.

Snark Less, Post More
Thank you for writing this, adrianhon.

Doing a FPP here... it can be daunting.
On the one hand, I feel some confidence posting about topics I know well, especially professional ones.

On the other, when I find something nifty or intriguing that I'd like to share, and I'm not a diehard about it? I'm quite skittish. Either the post might sink without much notice, or the snark comes out in force.

Reading further into this thread, I tabbed to one of today's posts. It's about a new development in launching craft into space.

First comment:
I will probably get shot down in flames here but I find Richard Branson's wankfest like that of Elon Musk and the others to be completely unpalatable at a time when so many are struggling to survive. Space tourism isn't really what humanity needs right now. YVMD

Good to know. But your comment - especially being the first one out of the gate - shouts PROBLEM! PROBLEM! right at the thread's start.

Metatalktail Hour: Background Noise
Right now I have bookshelves. That's because I'm an academic and also because I'm a bibliophile.

We're still settling in from a major move, so are building/getting more bookshelves to support the thousands of tomes now uneasily resting in boxes. So hopefully I can cram more into the video frame.

"Talk... less."
I read the US politics threads here, as far as I have time. Like freethefeet says, they offer a good perspective.

I usually don't comment or post because it doesn't seem useful. The American scene is incredibly contentious, as others have said. I'm not sure what I can contribute to MeFi on this topic.
