Stories from the Cold War
I lived behind the Wall as a kid. Don’t be to “glowy” in hindsight. Freedom of the Press is a good thing. Not having neighbors testifying about you under the eye of the Stasi is a good thing.

What was bad once I got back to the US was that the good things from Socialism: healthcare, housing, education, not starving, were all lumped in with the negatives of Communism by greedy fuckers.

Remember that all the bad shit Putin does….… [more]

Another thing never mentioned in US school during the 80s was how aligned on government spending to create jobs the US and USSR were during the 30s. We were very ideologically aligned about supporting artists and workers. Take a look at some of the amazing artwork put into the WPA projects. There were very heavily suppressed US government WWII propaganda films showing how our Russian brothers all worked together or the benefit of all.

All of that was silenced in the 80s.

I have anhedonia and want to teach my brain how to enjoy things again
Take a daily walk down the street, even if it's just to the corner and back.

There's your winner. Move your body in some way. It makes all the difference. I wish I remembered to do this more often, because when I keep with it I'm a happier person.

But also, watch out for fixating on the list. Allow yourself to skip or miss an item without obsessing about it or worse just ditching the whole endeavor. You're not a machine, it's ok to do or not do things. The list is a guide not a prison.

Where in LA is that one location that appears in every single LA movie?
Get back on San Vicente, take it to the 10 then switch over to the 405 north and let it dump you out to Mulholland where you belong, Chad!

Don't Forget, You're Here Forever!
If it helps at all, know that you are not alone. What you're feeling is natural with the way modern business/the world works. Disconnect when you're not on the clock. That's your time, even thinking about the hell hole is not healthy. Hugs.

Make collected Chrome tabs and bookmarks more aesthetically pleasing?
I think Chrome just released or is about to release new settings for group tabs. Read this on some tech blog recently, but blanking on source.

Best way for > 1 person to access a mailbox with Google Workspace
Turning off 2FA and sharing a password is certainly the easiest solution

As a sysadmin, please do not do this. Dig into the mailbox settings to enable multiple personnel.

To bidet or not to bidet
Have you heard the Good News of my Lord and Savior Toto Washlet? Seriously the best purchase I've made in the last two years. I never knew how empty was my soul until it was laved.

I need another way to say, "I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen."
Did she take your money and go to Chicago?

Also an 80s reference, so probably off mark.

Road trip NY - West Virginia - Kentucky - Missouri - Kansas - Colorado
The Missouri Botanical Garden in Saint Louis is a great half-day wander. While in town, you're then a short drive from the Saint Louis Art Museum, which is architecturally gorgeous, has a great collection, and is free because socialism benefits the community dammit.

Does this herpes assessment seem accurate?
Aren't there different types? Like there's the common "cold sore" almost anyone has around their mouth. Is the more uncomfortable genital variation the same thing, different, related?

I do know acyclovir/valtrex is a blessing of science.

Redflagging a sibling
I am also concerned with my niece potentially having access to these guns. She has struggled with depression and suicidal ideation in the past.

Consider this as an inside track to speak to him about being concerned about guns in the house. DO NOT suggest that he might be the problem.

Where have the coin counters gone? Long time passing
If you roll them yourself, wear gloves, coins are filthy and your hands will turn black rolling hundreds of coins. I learned from experience.

And if your name is Abehammerb, touching coins enough to roll them leads to your oral fixation making you NEED to put some of them into your mouth, even knowing how filthy they are!

I should talk to a psych professional about this, but then I might not get the mouth feels that I… [more]

Best read-alouds for early elementary, written in the last 20 years?
The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Fun to read out loud as well, because of alliteration and poetic language.

AUS language: Yeh Yeh Verse Yeaah Yeahh
Is this working internationally as well, or completely inter-Aus? Because years ago, I had to deprogram myself from thinking all Australians were constantly snarky with me. It's 100% the accent, and the problem was on the receiving side, not theirs.

I saw a similar thing while managing teams in Seattle and Portland. "Do the needful" is intended as a polite colloquialism from Indian tech staff, but was being read as a complete "You didn't do your job"… [more]

Should we hire a DJ for our wedding?
I got married on a boat, so we just had a playlist and it worked out great. BUT:

I've been to good weddings with the following:
-An all-star collection of funk musicians from the greater Jacksonville area. The bride's dance song was Chuck Mangioni's Feel So Good. Yes, this was a very odd, very alt, and well loved couple.
-An 1940s-style big band, which got a lot of people who wouldn't dance out there, because it wasn't "modern cool"… [more]

What/Who to follow for USA sports as a casual fan?
Agree with the above, this is serious baseball time, and Cardinals fans will always talk ball. I grew up in Illinois near STL, baseball's a form of religion there.

If you really don't know anything about baseball, this video by a former pitcher goes through all the rules starting with the absolute basics.

Wear sunscreen and/or sun protective clothing that covers the tops of your feet and the tops of your thighs.

And the tops of your ears! I made my ears into little ear Fritos once out in the desert. Don't be me.

Are electric toothbrushes good for receding gums?
Really recommend asking two separate dentists about this. Mine recommends either electric or water pressure though. Going electric has really helped me remember exactly how long I'm supposed to be brushing each quadrant. Turns out I cut corners without a timer!

1 month out West and it's a big world
The Hood River Fruit Loop! Stay at a BnB along the breathtaking Columbia River gorge. Enjoy local wine and fresh fruit products. The Timberline Lodge up on Mt Hood is almost certainly the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel. It's a nice area, just east down the gorge from Portlandia.

Might also pay to look at when Catholics were welcomed into the fundamentalist fold. Catholicism was a big no-no for a long time.

Tell me about your adventures with pre-internet physical bulletin boards
I once worked with a guy who asked way too many of our female colleagues out. He didn't over pursue, or ask more than once, but his question was always the same. One day on the bulletin board someone had posted a printout of his face with "Hi, I'm [redacted]. Want to get dinner?" and the tear off phone number tags.

It was the best thing.

Non-religious addiction recovery
FYI, I'm not knocking AA, it saved my grandfather's life. Really sorry if it came across that way. If it works for a person, I'm glad it works for them. But where I grew up it was very religiously focused, and that doesn't work for me.

Where can I rent a wifi device for an event in San Francisco?
The Nomad unit linked above is a good call.

If you're looking to do this on the cheap, and are tied to local, go to Frye's, they accept all returns (yay) but sell broken stiff back to people (boo).

The Re-Readables
King James Bible translation of Ecclesiastes. Really, it's amazing. Just skip the epilogue (12:9-14) which seems clearly tacked on to make the brilliant rest of the text fit Orthodoxy.

What is the capacity of a rhino’s bladder?
Once properly measured, I propose the rhinobladder to be Metafilter's new standard for liquid volume.

For example the homebrew article would call for 3 rhinobladders of Joe's Ancient Orange.

I also considered the rhinopiss, the rhinopee, the deluge d' rhino, and the OMG-what-do-those-things-drink.
