Trump Verdict Thread
I legit did not think this would happen, i thought for sure there would be a hung jury. damn, it has become impossible to expect the correct thing actually happening in our current system of justice. But I'm also scared, a bit, of the backlash. Yet another rubicon crossing, norm shattered, it's so exhausting to have no idea what the next week will bring.

the funniest thing is definitely trump locked up in county, getting knuckle tats, in an a-shirt surrounded by secret service, watching the election results from a tv mounted in a plexiglass box and winning from prison. that would be the apotheosis of the american system of justice

What's it like living in Pennsylvania?
I loved living in Pittsburgh but a couple things probably await you:

1. Pittsburgh has more cloudy and rainy days than Portland or Seattle. It can be dreary there.
2. You can't exaggerate how hilly it is. Still a great biking city.
3. It's not very diverse, although the universities help with this a bit.
4. It *is* very racist. Think southern style racism. And very segregated.
5. Pittsburgh is pretty small. There's like… [more]

Movie: Civil War
this is on streaming now so, I finally watched it and It's incredibly well made, but utterly incoherent. i have no idea what it's trying to say about journalism. like all antiwar movies, it's actually a pro war movie. i think the lesson at the end was, when the civil war comes, wouldn't it be cool if we had some really sick black and white Kodak Tri-X shots of the action as it's happening? that would be pretty sick, to consume the downfall of america with the proper film grain.

html hidden text - can it stay hidden on highlight?
Note that no matter what strategy you use to hide the text on highlight, if it gets picked up by the copy, it will be visible when they paste it into ChatGPT et al. Although if you're lazy enough to ChatGPT your homework, maybe you won't even notice?

BTW another strategy would be
<div style="opacity: 0.0;">
This text will be invisible, and won't show up on highlight in most browsers, but will be present in the copy/paste

Apple Records
This is basically unobjectionable as a list of good albums but objectionable as a proper ordering of the absolute best albums, missing tons of stuff, and really emphasizing middle class white suburban late-millenial taste, but not the edgy side of that. Also you can't make this list without Aphex Twin, arguably the most important electronic music producer of the past 30 years... but then have Travis Scott?

I've never seen a broadway production of Angels in America but if Nathan Lane can be an effective Cohn, Jeremy Strong will be an outstanding one. I just hope he doesn't go too method on it and get someone executed for treason

Sugar: Farewell
i guess in the end the alien thing kind of works. there's really only one other possible explanation for the existence of such a creature as sugar, not just his ability to block bullets but his kind of buddha nature, perfect level of tact, and unthinking love of humanity, and that's if he was an angel. i dunno if that would've been worse. in the end though i think it would've been improved if it was left ambiguous until the end whether he was in fact an alien or some kind of warrior monk, or… [more]

Smoking is Awesome
Nicotine by itself is not carcinogenic, and at normal doses is well tolerated. It raises blood pressure and the chance of a heart attack, but it's probably not as bad for your heart as, say, vyvanse or adderall or other ADHD meds. It has positive effects on cognition, and may have other benefits. The fear mongering around vaping is bizarre to me, even vaping by teens. It's far less harmful than, say, drinking alcohol. It's incredible how successful advocates have been at transferring the stigma… [more]

Having watched the Maggie Mae Fish video now, I can confidently say it's a bunch of bullshit. Sure the anti-vaping ads may not be effective. But the video continually conflates vaping and smoking as if they're the same thing, uniting them under the rubric of "nicotine use". They're not the same thing. It's absurd to claim they are. Nicotine is not what makes cigarettes bad for you.

Part of the problem with making effective anti-vaping ads is that you can't… [more]

the health effects here are literally entirely “potential”, “under investigation” and “mixed results”. we know that nicotine has cardiovascular effects, although they’re not exactly dramatic. it’s all just fear mongering and frankly it’s done to keep up funding for anti smoking initiatives now that they’ve won and smoking is thoroughly disreputable and has basically no base of political support. who… [more]

I think this ad would have played perfectly fine just 2 or 3 years ago. Nobody would have even thought twice about it. The intention is clear: everything someone needs to make art and music fits in this extremely thin device. Indeed, one of my main uses for my iPad lately is to plug my digital piano's midi into it and run state-of-the-art piano modelling software that sounds incredibly realistic (to me) and much more nuanced than the sample library in the digital piano. Sugar: Boy in the Corner
I'm not actually completely sure there will be a twist in the now traditional sixth sense. Granted I haven't watched this weeks episode. But Sugar might just be an ex-spy who takes on private work and has a dark past? The thing with the movie clips feels like post-modern metacommentary. The real twist would be if at the end they pull back and it's all been on movie sets all along.

I guess I have no choice but to love this song forever
My father being one of those boomers who think the Beatles were the last great band, because he was 11 when Help! came out, and him generally being unable to consider anything else good (like you're the same age as david byrne but you couldn't even get into the talking heads?), and just generally having a bad relationship with him means I refuse, obstinately, to get stuck in the middle-high-school music rut. Last I heard the Senator and the Shoe Licker are still showing up to the Castle in Tampa, but then again Tampa is, strangely, a kind of Goth capital. You might think the central florida climate would be a goth repellant, but you have to account for the absolutely cursed vibes of growing up in Tampa. Does a modern equivalent of HyperCard exist?
SuperCard is a direct descendant of hypercard (and even supports hypercard conversion). However, it's a 32 bit app and it looks like they have no plans to transition to 64bit, so you can't run it on modern macs.

Something in a similar vein, although without the easy to use templates, would be the Squeak or Pharo smalltalk systems.

Seinfeld has been on this bullshit for a while, and the weirdest thing about it to me is that Seinfeld's standup has basically never been "edgy" or "provocative" comedy. His best jokes are about like, doing laundry, shopping for groceries, how women love to use cotton balls but nobody knows what they're for. Old montreal is very crowded when the weather is nice and feels a lot like a theme park, so I wouldn't sweat not staying there. It's also not where the best restaurants are, instead it's filled with places that remind me of the bad restaurants in Prague's old city, tourist trap kind of overpriced but "fancy" (for the most part, there are some exceptions).

Movie: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
i've been rewatching the Supermen a la Reeves lately and they're all so delightfully terrible. This one however is not that bad, compared to Superman 3, which is an absolutely bonkers romp (richard pryor, computer hacker!, robert vaughn, evil business tycoon!). Movie: Argylle
i hated the cgi effects in this movie, which were uniformly terrible. especially in the final setpieces with the smoke effects and the pool of crude oil. just pure uncanny valley garbage. bring back practical effects in action films!

the critical reaction is spot on for me. you can have a dumb action movie if the action set pieces are good. they are not good in this movie, and the comedic bits are not enough to make up for it on the whole, even if i got a chuckle in here or there.

OJ Simpson dead at 76
it's pretty bonkers how the whole country was basically mesmerized by the trial. My teacher wheeled out a television for us to watch the verdict! In the 6th grade! I think she just didn't want to miss it. the whole thing was confusing, because while he was obviously guilty, i was already on my anti-cop bullshit by then and knew, just knew, that mark furhman was a dirty cop and a racist.

Anyway, I hope the Kardashians pay homage to the man who made them famous.

It's amazing we're beanplating the OJ simpson trial after all these years. It's true that one of the detectives (insanely!) took the blood to the scene. Whether or not they planted that evidence in the home, *Ron Goldman's blood was in Simpson's Bronco*, and as far as I know there is no basis to argue that the police planted or had a chance to plant evidence in the car.

Am I due royalties from my out of print book by a major publisher?
A book might be "sold out" because they've remaindered the remaining copies so they don't have to hold on to inventory that they don't expect to ever sell, in which case there's very little chance they are holding on to unpaid royalties.

Developer looking to merge homes, farming into agrihoods
conceptually I'm not against the idea. Some of these places even look nice. But it seems like a way to greenwash having a million+ dollar home in a gated community. The "farms" do not appear to be worked by the homeowners, which hey, many of these are 55+ communities, so not expecting our senior citizens to break their backs in the hot sun, but that just means migrant labor is holding up a boutique "farm to table" luxury experience. I have not seen any "agrihoods" that are just about having community gardens worked by homeowners. They're typically more like this: Olivette, NC. A small scale commercial farm surrounded by expensive houses. As far as I can tell it's essentially a way of marketing real estate in rural areas the way you might invent a new neighborhood in manhattan to sell condos.
