Vote the quidnunc kid #1 Tolkien limerick summarizer

Three rings for the elves, full of might;
Dwarves seven, men nine - that sounds right!
And one for their Lord? Sure!
He lives down in Mordor -
Where the shadows (and weather) are shite.
Our very own elected #1 the quidnunc kid has retold the entirety of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in limerick form and posted it on his profile page. Includes footnotes, also in limerick form. Rumors abound of an audiobook version.

I'm looking for a post with a non-linear dissertation

Some years ago (2007-10, I'd guess) there was a post to the Blue which linked to a dissertation. The dissertation was non-linear and the reader would choose the next part of the dissertation to read, and while that was happening, the dissertation wrote itself. Each part of the dissertation was in a little box, and the reader would choose which part to read by clicking on a box next to an already read box. I remember a black background with yellow boxes.

How about retiring "beanplating" as a meme?

Can we try to admonish people less often about "overthinking?"

cortex made a meme

Folk music, viral weirdness, and the Ballad of Steven Slater. Josh Millard, known to all and sundry here as cortex, analyses how The Ballad of Steven Slater written by Max Sparber, a.k.a. Astro Zombie, which cortex set to music and performed, went viral. How viral? Wolf Blitzer viral.

Brooklyn meetup? Other boroughs a possibility too.

I'll be in Brooklyn From the 23rd of March until the 28th. Anyone want to meet up? I'm mobile, I can go anywhere in New York City people want to meet up. The weekend is probably best, either Friday or Saturday. Whatcha say?

We do.

"A lot of people obsessed with venture capital see Metafilter as a lifestyle business, but in my mind, it’s a mature business. It works really well and yet nobody aspires to do something like this and I don’t know why. Nobody celebrates just simple businesses that work." - Interview with Matt Haughey by Sue Medha [via Matt's twitterfeed]

All hail homunculus!

homunculus has made 1000 high quality posts to the Blue. He has just become the first MeFite besides mathowie to cross into quadruple digits. Quantity aside, his posts are quality.

Update on post about Icelandic prime minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir

Update to a closed thread: Earlier this year Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was appointed by the president and parliament of Iceland to be caretaker prime minister until new elections could be held, in the process becoming the world's first head of government to be openly gay. Yesterday she lead her Social Democratic party to victory in parliamentary elections, ensuring that she will continue to serve as prime minister for the foreseeable future.

Reykjavík meet-up

I met Marisa Stole the Precious Thing for coffee earlier today and he and I thought it was about time Iceland had a MetaFilter meet-up. So, MeFites in Reykjavík and nearby towns, are you game for a meet-up on January 2nd?

I like seeing what the people behind the screen names look like

Can we make the meet-up photos more prominent?

A trip down MeFimory lane to Obama's 2004 convention speech

Here's a little trip down memory lane. Obama's 2004 speech at the Democratic convention caught MetaFilter's attention. On July 28th, 2004 there was swift's MeFi post Obama's been lauded (which, in a refreshing change, derailed into a discussion of Canadian politics) and later that same day ronv asked what's more realistic/ which will happen first in the united states: a minority president or a woman president?

Impromptu meetup in Melbourne?

Comrades Melburnian! Does anyone feel like an impromptu meetup on Maundy Thursday evening or during the day on Good Friday? A conference on Marxism seems like a good way to spend Good Friday.

MetaFilter's Own Physics Quandary

Tonight a debate that has pitted brother against brother, friend against friend, MeFite against MeFite, will be finally laid to rest. The long awaited Mythbusters episode about airplane vs. conveyor belt airs tonight at 9 o'clock. For real this time. No really, it's airing, Adam Savage said so.

How did this happen?

I'd much like a diminutive horse, please. An option in "Recent Activity" to view "all activity."

Proposal for new MetaFilter guidelines

The subject of rewriting the guidelines is something that comes up from time to time. As MetaFilter evolves as a community, it is good to rewrite the guidelines to reflect evolving standards. I have been thinking about how to write new guidelines on and off for the last week and here's my proposal. [more inside]

History Category on AskMe

Could "history" be added to the list of ask.me categories? I know that theoretically there could be an endless number of these but "history" seems to be a pretty big omission. I put my recent history question in "society & culture", and so did flexxer, while cuke put his in "grab bag" and my wife put hers in "writing & language".

Editting feature request.

After making this post I saw that I had somehow deleted half of it (probably when fixing a tag on preview). Is there some way to implement an edit function of one's fpp? Maybe have a five minute grace period?
