Tongue in cheek songs about historical topics
Sabaton!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabaton_(band)

Sabaton /ˈsæbətɒn/ is a Swedish power metal band from Falun. The band's main lyrical themes are based on war, historical battles, and acts of heroism[1]—the name is a reference to a sabaton, knight's foot armor.

What are some cool things to do with a 3D "printer pen"?
I should have mentioned: She's an artistic 15-year-old.

Contraption & trap supplies for kids
The book "sneaky uses for everyday things" seems like a good guide to making traps and contraptions from household items. I admit I haven't actually read this book, but I've been meaning to get it and your question just reminded me of it.

How do I avoid the troll picks in the Hugo nominees?
Yes, of course read a lot and vote for what you like.

But I don't want to waste time with garbage deliberately put on the list just to screw with people.

I've already crossed out everything published by castalia house, "vox day" and jeffro johnson. They're part of the troll group. I just wanted to see if there's anything else that's as clearly disposable that I had missed.

Mark Helprin quote
Google Books lets you search within certain books. Searching "harbor" in Winter's Tale didn't turn up any quotes like the one you're looking for, though.

Maybe it's a different book, or maybe the quotation doesn't contain the word harbor.

Optical fiber transmitting light gained lengthwise?
It's not the best source, but there's a Wikibook said to be by somebody named Faraaz Damji (Frazzydee) that says "Cladding also ensures that outside light does not get into the cable and interfer with the light transmitted." https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Optics/Fibre_optics

Cladding is the first layer of protective sheath, and it's reflective. The second is called the buffer coating, and protects against physical damage.

And to those of you listening in the year 2100,
Neat question. Made me want to look for things like that.

Here is Bertrand Russel's early message for you, a child of the future.

The rest of this isn't quite what you're looking for:

Theoretical time capsules:

The short story Time Shards by Gregory Benford involves a voice recording from about the year 1280 by a man addressing his future descendants. It's pretty good. (The idea… [more]

Hey. I just found this:

Jeremiah McDonald was on the Today Show in 2012 or 2013 for having shot a video as a kid in 1992 addressing himself, and then responding to it in 2012. (There's nothing spectacular about it, but it's kooky cute fun.)

The Today Show clip (caution: Took a while to load for me, and almost crashed my browser.)

The 2012 cross-time conversation video

The 1992 unedited video

Why does my brain put an article before IHOP
You don't say "the NASA" but you would say "the National Aeronautics and Space Administration".

So you don't say "the IHOP" unless you're saying "the IHOP on Second and Main" or whatever.

What caused this ice formation in my mother's birdbath?
Thorzdad: Do you have any idea why that is? I've never seen ice spikes in any freezer.

The Wiki page jquinby linked says that ice spikes can be formed at home by just freezing distilled water in ice cube trays.

Do you use filtered water?

Virtual Bullproofing my Life
An article linked in the Metafilter thread "beyond brute force" last month has a good graph and explanation showing why it's important for passwords to have at least nine characters: http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/05/how-crackers-make-minced-meat-out-of-your-passwords/2/

Passwords should also be things that couldn't be stored in a database, like actual words. I'm no expert, but using a password manager seems to be highly recommended.

Portland, OR Filter: We found a dog, what should we do?
I occasionally see a dog out running around by itself with no owner in sight, but it always seems to happen when I'm already late getting somewhere so I can't stop and do what you've done. Good on you, Nanook. Come back and post if this dog's owner is found, please.

I need a recommendation for a sleeper sofa.
I'll second Diagonalize and ktkt's recommendations, though I honestly have never had difficulty sleeping on an ordinary couch or even floor. I may be unusual in that regard.

Where to get tape of Nixon aides plotting murder?
Awesome, thanks, magstheaxe.

Also: Am I correct that nobody ever got prosecuted for conspiring to murder Jack Anderson? If they didn't, why not?

Commissioned original art, art may not be original. Help?
You say you don't know where the Internet picture came from. tineye.com will let you upload that image and search for where else on the Internet it appears.

I just found that Google recently implemented a similar feature: http://images.google.com/imghp?hl=en

How did women come to be regarded as inferior in society?
I disagree with Sara C. above that there's no scientific basis for any theory on the explanation for the prevalence of patriarchy in human societies. Demography, biology, and zoology provide good clues.

(Open Yale Courses has been linked on the blue before, and there's all sorts of awesome stuff in there.)

(The MIT course Animal Behavior also gives good evidence of a generalized connection between what drives human behavior and what drives… [more]

Good thoughts, glasseyes. I think you're right that there's usually a tendency for masculinity to be threatened by femininity. Women can wear men's clothes, but men wearing women's clothes is thought to be ridiculous.

All the world's a book, and all the men and women merely characters
They were published in the late 1800s so they're a bit out of date, but Noli Me Tangere (free version) and El Filibusterismo AKA The Reign of Greed (Free version) are a pair of novels by Jose Rizal, the Filipino "Father of his country," about the injustice of the 300-year Spanish occupation and the way it affected the Filipino people. They portray a fictional uprising against Spanish rule. Spanish authorities sparked an actual uprising against Spanish rule when they executed him for… [more]

Can you collect meteorite dust in your backyard? How?
Another method mentioned is putting a plastic bag with a magnet in it in your rain gutters. But surely that would collect so much more roof debris than space debris that it would be useless.

I also found this cool little project from some European astronomers where they talk about collecting space debris in Antarctica, which being covered with snow is one huge relatively clean surface: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2013/pdf/2031.pdf

Name that book
It may be the Safehold series by David Weber.

Humans move to a new world to escape genocidal aliens who can find us by tracking our radio transmissions and seeing our city lights, so they keep their new planet dark and silent by adopting a religion that condemns technology as the downfall of the Earth.

I haven't read the series, so I don't know if it's really the one.

Pat, I'd like a P, B, F, T, L, S... ?
A pair of British Safari hunters are arguing in a bar. One says, "of course it's spelled 'W-W-U-M-M.' There's just no other way to put it."

The other says, "I'm pretty sure it has traditionally been spelled "W-O-O-M."

A waitress walking by overhears the conversation and says, "No, it's spelled 'W-O-M-B'. Womb."

The two hunters look at each other.… [more]

Beijing Stopover
I was in Beijing a few months ago, and I stayed in the Hilton Beijing Capitol Airport Hotel. The staff was generally helpful, though they spoke little English. (I speak no Chinese.) It was a great place.

Here's the location. Not far from Tiananmen Square and other historic sites you won't get to see. The price is listed at $95 per night, though it's $104 per night with fees included.

I still do not have a Chinese passport. My girlfriend and… [more]

Who can recommend Spanish-language music and PC games?
Thanks for the answers, everybody. I'm still following the rabbit holes you've provided.

I've also found it helpful to use Spanish-language jokes. For example: http://www.spanishpronto.com/spanishpronto/jokes.html

Like a song, a joke has a structure that's easy to remember and gives a context that lets you know what it means.

Photo Search Help Needed!
Where did you find it the first time?

You say you lost your link, so I'm guessing you found it online. But can you be any more specific than that? Do you remember what was going on with the picture (what event it was capturing)? Was it a photograph or a still from a film? Was it a news photo, amateur photo, or an art project? Was it color or black-and-white?

Is it one of these?

Saving web images without right-click on the mouse?
You can use the keyboard to control your mouse with a Windows feature called mousekeys. In Windows, hit alt+shift+numlock.

In Windows 7 at least, you can still control your mouse while mousekeys is enabled.

Get the pointer where you want it to be using the mouse.

Hit the minus sign on the numberpad, then hit 5 on the numberpad. This is the same as right clicking.

It is also possible that there… [more]
