Outdoor Dining in DC
Seconding Zorba’s for a casual bite.

If you’re willing to go a little bit north of Dupont, Lapis, which is right between Dupont and Adams Morgan has absolutely delicious Afghan food and fantastic dessert. They would definitely qualify as 75th birthday dinner worthy. They have only a very small patio on the side so while you wouldn’t normally need to make a reservation there, if you specifically want outdoor seating I would recommend doing so. Pretty sure that we have… [more]

Where to stay outside of Florence, accessible by train?
Assisi is not terribly far by train (about 3 hours) and is strikingly pretty. Small hill town, surrounded by hills. It was where St. Francis lived and started the Franciscan order. Another interesting fact about the town is that during WWII the Catholic church in Assisi started what was called the Assisi Network in an effort to hide Jewish Italians from the nazis and Assisi’s entire Jewish population survived the war.

The region that Assisi is in, Umbria, was home to the… [more]

Reliable stories of fending off assault in USA?
I used to work as a librarian in a major metropolitan area, so I routinely had opportunities to deal with unstable situations. I would agree that what has mostly worked is creating enough of a distraction or diversion that it brings the temperature down enough to get everyone to a safer place.

One time I prevented a stabbing. A man experiencing some serious delusions had begun threatening another library visitor quietly from a table away and eventually approached him and… [more]

Should we name our son Camille?
It's worth mentioning that you and your partner will end up being the ones having to convince him that his name is perfectly fine and that he should take pride in it when he comes home upset that someone teased him about it or mispronounced it again. And that will only go so far in his mind because you'll be his parents so of course you think his name is great. In the rest of his life, he will be the one answering questions about his name and figuring out what name he wants to use when he goes… [more]

How to cook without cooking.
You’re getting a stove in a week? You can totally do this. Check out ask mefis about no cook meals, but here is what I would recommend for one week without the need to buy additional kitchenware:

Day one: crusty bread, nice cheese, fresh fruit, salami or sliced turkey

Day two: microwave steamable rice, microwave steamable veggies, frozen fish or chicken nuggets made in the toaster oven, some interesting sauce (kalbi! Creamy cilantro! Sriracha… [more]

Where in the US will I find the best (reasonable) wedding dresses?
Anthropologie basically entered the wedding dress industry with dresses like what you're describing.

They also have stores all over the place. You can search here and limit by stores that have a wedding shop. All of their dresses cost much less than 10k.

I have reading kid, I want to make sure he becomes a reading adult...
Honestly, as someone who worked as a children's librarian for years, your child does not sound like he is on the path to aliteracy. His selection is varied and the series books he's reading are a great stepping stone to middle grade novels (Mysterious Benedict Society, Percy Jackson, Serafina, etc). There are plenty of middle grade series that your local librarian can guide him to. Reading for pleasure happens best when kids explore their own reading interests.

Do you… [more]

How to (and should) a Canadian Incorporate in the U.S. for consulting
Your best bet is to reach out to a cpa or lawyer familiar with business taxation and regulation in each country. Most people choose a place of incorporation based on the location that provides the highest tax benefits and regulatory benefits. In the U.S. this can vary fairly significantly from state to state. Delaware is popular based on it’s favorable tax law, so some well known corporations maintain a small administrative office there.

The cost of this would vary… [more]

Mourning(?) one who contained multitudes
It’s worth remembering that obits and eulogies only rarely touch upon the complexities of the deceased. It would be refreshing to have an honest eulogy saying “This person made some very bad choices in life but we’re here today because it’s good to get together and dude needs some burying.” but in practice that tends to be stifled because societally people try not to speak ill of the dead.

You’re not obligated to mourn in grief. I have definitely been to some funerals… [more]

Library career prospects with lots of experience but no degree
Where I live (major metropolitan area) you would need an MLS for you resume to be considered for a librarian position. You could easily get a library associate position, but the pay is abysmal for those.

However, about 2-3 hours out from my area, the small rural libraries might be a good fit, predominantly because they have a smaller applicant pool so they could actually read resumes rather than having the resumes sorted by a computer system first.… [more]

What's a picnic alternative to Matzah pizza?
You don’t have to make it stick out as extra Passover-ish.

-A salad bar set up with optional beans in a separate dish. (Some people have beans on Passover but others won’t so it’s best to put them separate)

-Tuna salad or whitefish salad

-Fruit or dried fruit and varied cheeses

-Nuts

-Small yogurt cups

-Olives and pickles

But yeah, Daily Alice is right, don’t combine meat and cheese on the same platter.

It seems like you have relied a lot this friend and I think it's important to re-frame why he might be acting this way since it seems unusual based on his prior support. Non-prescription glasses: hot or not?
Did you find out directly from the person or through hearsay? I wear prescription glasses but my eyesight is accurate enough that if I’m not driving anywhere that day, I don’t wear them. I’m sure there are some people who have seen me on weekends and thought “I thought she needed glasses…”

If the person told you directly, then yeah it’s a little unusual, but they might realize that at some point and you don’t have to be the one to ruin their day over it.
posted to Ask MetaFilter by donut_princess at 3:53 AM on March 14, 2024
Also if the person is babyfaced, they might find that nonprescription lenses adjust the way that people interact with them. For example: the average stranger might take them more seriously, they might not get carded as often at bars, or people might consider them “smart.”

None of those things actually tie in with eyesight obviously, but human society can be weird in the assumptions they make 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you are on good terms with her parents otherwise, this could be a middle ground option to agree too, but if they can't even agree to that, something is definitely up. I’m with Iris Gambol on this one. The most enjoyable thing to do in this situation is to lean in hard. Get a bunch of coffee table books about bears on eBay, buy bear art, get bear soap dispensers, etc. And then decorate like it’s the Bear holidays for your family’s visit. Then instead of “oh, you still have that?” It just becomes “wow, um you really like bears…” to which you can nonchalantly respond “yup”
