“I think of you and dream of you, and my first waking thought is of you”
I would feel really betrayed if I married and had five children with a guy and then learned on his deathbed that he didn’t even share his real name with me.

How Christian is Christian Nationalism?
Also a reminder that the New Testament only makes up like 20% of the entirety of the Bible.

Access to a certain inner experience of love
When I was in college, I invented a superhero called the Troutslapper, who would find people who needed it and slap them upside the head with a wet trout.

Wait…When was this? Did you distribute this? ‘Cause I swear to gawd I’ve seen this premise as a comic somewhere in my timeline.

Sounds like the Fish Slapping Dance sketch by Monty Python.

"How delicious, eating goober peas"
Teddie has the sexiest mascot. I swear that all that smooth and super (c)hunk of a bear does is lie around suggestively and raise its eyebrows at people all day as if to say “I know you want this”

our bodies our choice
DC, where abortion is protected, also is not a state and congress has successfully curtailed some of DC’s voters’ will in the past. One thing people can do to secure the right of people in DC to access full reproductive healthcare is to push their senators to support DC statehood.

a muscle abnormality in the chicken
I went off chicken totally during pregnancy and the desire for it never really returned. Every now and again I’ll get a whole rotisserie chicken at the store but those are smaller and typically ok. Even so, I still get a little nauseated thinking of chicken, more so than other poultry for some reason. I have a friend who is pregnant at the moment and experiencing the same aversion. Maybe it’s just an aversion to overly woody chicken but it’s not like there’s enough adequate research into… [more]

The Resurgence of the Abortion Underground
Kadin2048 Thanks for posting that FiveThirtyEight article. There’s a misconception out there that when women experience miscarriage (the end result of 20% of pregnancies), they always know about it and the fetus just comes out on its own. Often, a woman goes to a routine appointment, gets an ultrasound, is informed that the fetal pulse has stopped, and in this moment of shock is given three options: to wait for weeks for the body to possibly expel the nonviable fetus (doesn’t always work), to… [more]

Nature-Deficit Disorder
Definitely echoing that Lightman's view on nature appears to be from a curated idealized tourism position. My partner's family lives in a rural area and while I very much enjoy going out there, it always reminds me how much work it is to live in the middle of nature when your neighbor is a mile+ away. With the seasonal vegetable harvest work, caring for the herd, keeping enough of the landscape shorter so deer ticks remain at bay (it was a really bad tick season this past year), repair of gravel… [more]

The CDC has released new mask guidelines for the vaccinated
There are two groups of unvaccinated: Procrastinators who are willing to get the shot but haven't done so yet, and those for whom the pandemic is policiticzed

Well I guess it’s time to have a come to Jesus talk with my lazy politicized infant child...

So much of this thread seems to forget or ignore the proven reality that masks also protect the wearer.

Fun fact: children under 2 are not allowed to wear masks cause they can choke or suffocate.

Maybe not snow, rain, heat or gloom of night, but what about Trump?
One way you can support the USPS is to buy stamps! You can get them online now at https://store.usps.com/store/home, then use them at your leisure.

The postal service accounts for stamps as unearned revenue. This means your purchase doesn't really benefit USPS until the stamps are sent through the mail. If you buy stamps, try to use them in relatively short order so that your purchase can make a difference. A great way to use them is to send letters… [more]

Welp now I’m just envisioning Fawkes the phoenix as a seagull covered in curry. That wingspan photo is kind of majestic.

Old Library Tickets
Right there with you on the mild grumbling SaharaRose!

RolandOfEld, it's typically no big deal for us to look people up for a checkout. However, I would encourage you get a new card if you have misplaced yours because sometimes you will need the number to access online resources or to place holds on materials.

Fun tips for library card users:
-Some people take a picture of their card using their phone so they will have the barcode if… [more]

#BoycottStarbucks
I work in a public library so I had a bit of a difficult time with this thread. The manager obviously handled this incorrectly. Unless she thought that approaching the men would have led to urgent and immediate physical danger, she should have been there with the police. It was fairly telling in the longer video that the manager wasn’t even close by. I think the main issue is that she basically threw these guys to the wolves and walked away.

At the same time, I know… [more]

A virtual trip to the Ghibli Museum
I wonder how often American theaters or music venues worry that they're not accommodating enough to Chinese tourists.

It's not a theater or music venue. It's a museum. Museums in the U.S. worry an awful lot about how accessible they are to foreign tourists.

It's also incredibly difficult to get tickets to this high demand museum. If you don't live in Japan, you have to visit a specific travel office that you may or may not… [more]

Sorry to Bug Ya
This makes me incredibly frustrated. Her performance is mainly a large number of stereotypical beliefs about how people who struggle with mental illness behave. I work in a major city at a public library. I see people struggling with mental illness on a daily basis.

I feel like this woman's view of what it means to have a mental illness was based on an undeveloped brainstorm along the lines of "I'm going to pretend to have a mental illness to see how people respond.… [more]

Against YA
I am an adult and I just read Tuck Everlasting for the first time in my life. I feel that I gained a better understanding from the novel as an adult than I would have as a young adult.

The late and great Maurice Sendak recently said to Colbert "I don't write for children. I write, and then someone says 'That's for children.'"

Men will never...clean without being asked “because it sucks"
I "mopped" the kitchen floor last week with baby wipes. That's the first time I have done anything other than sweep it in an entire year. It looks fine. And seriously if anyone would come into our apartment and judge me for that, why the heck are they looking at the floor anyway?
