Star Trek: Picard: The Last Generation
I didn't like the season in general (marginally better than S2) but damn. Renaming the Titan is such lazy fan wankery, even by the standards of a season steeped in it. But it's also incredibly bad luck to rename a vessel. I'm hoping season 4 is just 20 minutes of the supposed "Enterprise" running into something as it tries to leave space dock.

Then a sad trombone sound effect.

Yep. Shaw was one of the only things I liked about this season. Boring Baby Picard gets a credits stinger, but the actually interesting guy gets killed off so the legacy character can get promoted. I dug the face turn in terms of Seven, but damn. It could have been handled in another way. I would watch the hell out of STAR TREK: SHAW. A show centered around a captain who's that particular flavor of asshole could have been fun.

Movie: John Wick: Chapter 4
JOHN WICK 4 resoundingly beating SHAZAM 2 at the box office was not something I would have predicted.

That was the stupidest movie I have ever seen (and I have seen a lot of stupid movies in my life)

As someone who actually made one of the stupidest movies ever, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you need to see more stupid movies.

Yeah. It's over the top, heavily stylized, and utterly unrealistic. But those aren't problems. That's what it's aiming for and I think it's very intelligently made.

Star Trek: Picard: The Bounty
Shaw continues to be one of the only things I like about this show, from any season. Yet I keep watching.

I have to say it's hilarious that Worf describes himself as a pacifist now despite being introduced into the show via decapitating a guy.

Movie: The Relic
I've been a sucker for this movie since I saw it in theaters. It's doofy as hell, but well-crafted doofy. Peter Hyams could direct the shit out of a movie. As usual Tom Sizemore is a lot of fun. Total piece of crap in real life, obviously.

I will say it's weird to me that it cut out the co-lead character of the novel, Aloysius Pendergast, a brilliant FBI agent from New Orleans with a completely inaccurate accent. Basically Benoit Blanc: Monster… [more]

Movie: Ghostbusters
Yep, this movie is a great big ball of fun. And McKinnon's character is my new crush. Swoon.

I only have two quibbles.

1. I like that Patty is established as knowing a lot about the history of New York, but they didn't really do much of anything with it. I wanted more of that.

2. The original (and the sequel) had some super nerdy lore going on. Lovecraftian gods with silly names and crazy prophecies. Thinly-veiled… [more]

I think everyone's recent favorite would probably be Close Encounter .

Holy crap. I haven't watch SNL in maybe 15 years? That shit was great.

Game of Thrones: No One
I would have been okay with the Waif chase if Arya had not been dealing with a bunch of stab wounds to the gut. It broke my suspension of disbelief. Beyond that I'm okay with the whole parkour Terminator thing, as long as the show doesn't make a big habit of it.

But I loved how it ended and was glad it cut away on the candle slice. I'd rather imagine what went on than hear the sounds of scuffling.

Supernatural: Alpha and Omega
Man, what a great ending. I did not see that coming. Also, I'm totally down with a Supernatural big bad that isn't, you know... a supernatural big bad.

Game of Thrones: The Door
Yep. The Hodor reveal was exceptionally well done. I also loved the satirical play, Torienne and the sudden cut to penis.

Less effective, I felt, were the Children of the Forest. I laughed when they started lobbing magical hand grenades at the White Walkers, but I actually guffawed at the last one's Gorman/Vasquez heroic sacrifice moment.

I guess that I was able to switch emotional gears so quickly for the Hodor reveal shows how well that was handled.

Supernatural: All in the Family
Late to the party, but yeah. Way back when they came as close as they could come to saying "Chuck is God" without actually uttering those words. When he showed up again, before any line of dialogue, I went, "Yep. God's back."

Oh, and I totally agree, something something. Ackles is great. I'm so happy to still have him in the role but I also feel like he's slumming? He should have a much more interesting career than he does.

Movie: Mad Max: Fury Road
It always bums me out when things like makeup and editing are considered "technical awards". These are artists who deserved their awards for their artistry.

Oh, I didn't mean to call you out in particular. They ARE referred to as "technical" all the time. Mine is a broader complaint.

tobascodagama, in my experience socialist film criticism* is almost always an exercise in confirmation bias.

* I single out "socialist" and "film" because those are things I'm more likely to read.

Yeah, that exactly. That's one of my favorite elements in the MAX sequels. It was funny how internet reactionaries were going bonkers about how Max was playing second fiddle to others (in this case women) and it was clear that they didn't know the franchise at all.

(To be clear, I realize that Dip Flash is not coming from that reactionary perspective at all.)

Supergirl: Truth, Justice and the American Way
The fact that Fort Rozz wasn't *just* Kryptonians on the back end is another thing that bugs me about the broader world of Supergirl. Like, sure Krypton is gone, but aren't any other space governments interested in where their prisoners ended up? Is Earth really far away? Are we a no-fly zone for some reason, (possibly proximity to an army of White Martians)?

Maybe the rest of the universe simply doesn't know where it ended up? It seems like the only… [more]

Most Fun Fly Fact: Cronenberg himself plays the abortionist because he couldn't find an actor willing to take the role.

I wish I could remember where I got this, but what I heard was that Geena Davis wanted Cronenberg to play that role because she trusted him and didn't want some rando standing between her legs. That might be complete bullshit though, given my lack of source.

Legends of Tomorrow: Night of the Hawk
The writing here was pretty shit, but this episode was directed by Joe Dante and I think it shows. If nothing else, it's much better crafted than the show normally is.

All they'd need to do to (narratively) take care of Savage is have someone run to the window and not find him. Like how Michael Myers vanishes at the end of HALLOWEEN. It seems really lazy that they keep doing this sort of thing.

Dang. I was hoping for a full episode debate, like Santos v. Vinick on the West Wing. They'd actually talk about all the non supervillain issues the city is facing. Infrastructure, schooling, etc.

Another Jay. When he was taping his code he was tapping his name first.

Except that after that Barry said something about Jay being safely on Earth 1 and the masked man responded with mute agitation instead of gesturing at himself. If the masked man is another Jay he sucks at communication.

The X-Files: Babylon
Yeah, I too was hoping for some sort of switcheroo after the bombing cold open. I'd say it was lazy except it was merged with a comedic thing involving magic mushrooms and teaming up with the X-Files Babies. It's like two different episodes had a head-on collision.

The Expanse: Season 1: "Dulcinea" through "Leviathan Wakes"
I think the "vomit zombies" from the books would be distinct enough that it wouldn't feel too formulaic.

I was surprised that S1 didn't finish out the ending of Leviathan Wakes. That would be a pretty bonkers cliffhanger for a season to end on.

Movie: Turbo Kid
Any thoughts on Apple being a Manic Pixie Dream Girl and literally an object? I'm wondering if there was some intentional commentary going on there.

I dig this movie in general. It's sweet without being twee and combines a bunch of retro references in a way that doesn't feel ironic. Although I do think this 80s/90s SF/Action riff thing is getting a bit old at this point.

The X-Files: Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster
The transgender stuff, like the almost-blowjob in the previous episode, somehow falls just short of seeming intolerant. It's hard to explain, but it just feels weird. It plays like they shot a really broad, intolerant sequence but then all the really bad jokes were taken out. Is anybody else getting a weird vibe? And if so, can you please articulate it better than I did?

I'm having a hard time articulating it, too. I guess for me it's the fact that… [more]

Supernatural: The Devil in the Details
I liked Rowena in the abstract but never liked how she was used in the show. The whole period where she was living with Crowley was awful and made both characters seem weak. I was pumped when they eventually parted ways and I guess it's too bad she didn't have a chance to do much before being female-character-in-Supernaturaled to death.
