I started reading the article and the second "expert" said it can't be poetry because it rhymes and I stopped there because poetry can certainly rhyme, even though it's not the dominant mode right now.

Throwing some anecdata in. I had the worst taste in music when I was a teenager, and I haven't listened to that music since high school. And I don't listen to the music I listened to in my twenties, or my thirties. I am not great at finding new music, but I am constantly seeking new-to-me music, usually bands from earlier decades that I somehow missed.

I realize that it's beloved by many but I read Nine Princes in Amber for the first time earlier this year, and I kinda hated it. There's not a single solid detail to grab onto in the whole book. There's a war in which millions die, and each atrocity is related like a catalog entry. And the whole book is like that. Mentions of astounding things, but not descriptions of them.

I love these. I used to show them on 16mm at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival in Chicago. Fats Waller did two of my favorites, and one thing I love is that it's clear that they shot them back to back: same outfit, same backdrop, same dancers.

When I worked at Radio Shack in college, we would hook the battery terminals of leftover toys up to the speaker outputs of our big stereos, then slowly turn up the volume. Sometimes you'd get a satisfying squawk out of the toy before it started to smell like burning wires.

There was a comment on here, I think, that had a really wonderful analysis of "How You Remind Me" and why it's so freaking catchy. I think the commenter called it a brilliant song presented in the most troglodyte-esque manner. I've tried looking for it but haven't managed to find it again. Anyway, super catchy song, guys; please get out of my head.

I guess I always thought that the UK had given up on apostrophes. I remember visiting and seeing dozens of streets and businesses where they had obviously just stopped using an apostrophe. Franklins = a bar owned by Franklin. Etc. I'm shocked to see that there's controversy over this.

This reminds me a little of the academic-speak phrase "the ways in which," as in "I will look at the ways in which X happens." In 90% of the uses, it could easily be replaced by "how." Drives me nuts.

Fuck them for union busting, and fuck them right in the ear for every time I've been trying to enjoy a movie while some troglodyte behind me sucks on chicken wings like we're in a famine. None of the theaters near me are theaters anymore; they're all shitty restaurants that happen to show movies. Most of the filmgoing I do now is at local universities where they don't allow food in the theater, which is blissful.

Seems like a good opportunity to recommend 'Way Out, a cheapo Twilight Zone clone hosted by Roald Dahl in 1961. Fourteen episodes were produced, and maybe nine of them can be found on Youtube. A couple of them are scarier than anything TZ managed, despite the incredibly low budget.

Some of the graphs are weird. Yes, of course artists who first made it to the upper reaches of the Hot 100 since 2020 have generally had a hard time appearing in the same position at least 10 times, because it's only 2023.

This is lovely.

About ten years ago I helped run a popup community arts space in a small mansion. At one opening, I invited a seven-piece band to play, but had each instrumentalist stationed in different rooms on different floors. Each of them could hear the drummer, and that's about it. They played a whole set that way, and when you walked through the house, you'd hear different parts of the same songs playing depending on where you were.
