Veronica Mars: Season 4 discussion
A considered take from Anne T. Donahue at Vulture:

And therein lies the truth behind Veronica’s character in season four: She is older, and that is it. But the lack of evolution between her teen and 30-something selves doesn’t take away from this latest installment of
Veronica Mars. In fact, it makes it better. Because while I’d love to have watched her championing therapy, communication, and shutting up when Weevil explained this lack of… [more]

>Jeremy Bearimy
This idea is now awaiting its moment to serve as a model of real world theories in the fields of theoretical physics and statistics.

Not only the real world, but we have a good example of a named trope in sf about to make its way in real time into the canon. We can watch it as it happens! Jeremy Bearimy is going to be a normal thing, an absurdist, somewhat cartoonish but genuinely felt description of how time travel mechanics are supposed to work. That's so wonderful!

Riverdale: Chapter Twenty: Tales from the Darkside
I've been sort of down on this whole season compared to the first one. I wanted more nutty gothic antics, more Blossom board meetings to determine the course of the maple syrup empire, more wondering whether Betty's sister was a hallucination or an alt, that kind of thing. This season felt flatter and less fun overall until last night, when it got weird and unpredictable again. I don't want to know what's going to happen. I want them to surprise me! I want to gasp and cheer and snicker. This… [more]

The Good Place: Janet and Michael
Holy crap. Claire Danes' father-in-law is Hugh Dancy's dad, Jonathan Dancy. Craig Ferguson was so excited to learn that Dancy taught philosophy, he invited him on the show.

Orphan Black: To Right The Wrongs of Many
There are many reasons to praise Graeme Manson and John Fawcett’s science-fiction thriller Orphan Black, which is barreling through its final season on BBC America, but the first is that it gave its brilliant star Tatiana Maslany the role(s) of a lifetime. This piece will make a case for Maslany as not just the most impressive actress on TV today but also the most fun to watch, so we should start by reiterating something that every fan of the show has said or… [more]

I do wonder whether the world is large and separate enough that some three hundred fifty (?) identical twentyish young women would never encounter any of their counterparts. I guess we can handwave handlers and Dyad and whatever for an explanation within the story but outside the story? Is our world so potentially disconnected?

Might Clone Club go public for their finale? Much information already has gone public about the board and Dyad and the faked longevity scheme and the genetic harvesting stuff. Maybe Cosima and Alison and Sarah and Rachel and Krystal (and Helena?) all stand up in front of cameras and ask the remaining Leda clones to come forward, to accept the cure Cosima has developed?

Orphan Black: Gag or Throttle
Scott's reunion with Cosima really worked for me. I'm happy with their relationship. No scenes in Geneva with Felix and Adele doesn't work for me. We didn't need location shoots, come on. Although I guess scenes of Felix scamming Swiss hotties while Adele drinks and clicks a mouse wouldn't attract many viewers. I do wonder what happened to Art's new partner. The infinite regress tablet view when Rachel looked into it made me certain she'd choose Odin's sacrifice for wisdom and boy howdy did she.… [more]

Orphan Black: Manacled Slim Wrists
Some lines and situations felt awkward and forced. The Revival villagers attacked their own dwellings instead of the house on the hill? Despite no visible armed force preventing them from going up the hill? It's probably an overall good to have an explicit line about the patriarchy, but "With fortune and fiction, that's how the patriarchy works" feels too explicit somehow. Maybe it's necessary to make a statement that plain to get it across, but I'm disappointed in its bluntness. The… [more]

Orphan Black: The Few Who Dare
This crew built up a lot of trust with me over the seasons. Plus, they're still introducing new characters! New clued-in clone-hunting partner for Art? Yes please. And the creepy village Revival, off the grid on an island? like pointing at LOST and daring themselves to say Here is how you finish an episodic series based on mysteries? Yes, please! I'm expecting them to go for broke, here. Cosima explicitly called out myths and the functions of myths. I… [more]

Orphan Black: From Dancing Mice to Psychopaths
The swan doctor Westmoreland seems to be much older than he ought to be, meaning life-extension. I'm now guessing that the clone initiatives among other initiatives were intended to discover how and why Westmoreland lives so much longer than ordinary people. I further guess that the initiatives were begun by Westmoreland but got out of his control some time ago, perhaps generations ago, and further guess that whatever made him live longer has its origins at least partially… [more]

Orphan Black: The Mitigation of Competition
It hardly matters whether he was surrendering I think. Helena, being a cagey operator herself, knows cagey operators look for advantages. She knows that guy was a cagey operator. She waits until her arrow won't hit Allison then executes him, giving him no chances to stall or evade or do any of the other cagey operator things that might get him out of the predicament. Also, fuck that guy, and I hope his stupid girlfriend gets an arrow in the neck next. DELPHINE!!

Orphan Black: Transgressive Border Crossing
Probably some defensiveness and projection involved for Sarah thinking about Fe finding other family. She's his real family; he's hers; it's got to be hard to see him seeking realer-seeming things than her and her tragically convoluted situation. I'm also loving how wild and fearless the show feels. I have no idea whether the narrative inconvenience of a pregnant Helena means she's a goner, which would be an easy fix for a tough story, or whether they'll jump forward in time five years, or… [more]

Orphan Black: The Collapse of Nature
I love how unable I am to predict basically anything about this show. I love how it throws so many balls in the air but doesn't feel out of control. So much has happened, so many interests involved, and we're only 31 episodes in? It's hard to appreciate I think how dense and intricate the plotting must be. It's such a bold move to go back and do a prequel; it feels sort of like an announcement that the writers know what they're doing, that they understand how their stories fit together, how they… [more]

Masters of Sex: Below the Belt
Barbara and Lester! I didn't see that coming but am so pleased at their first interaction. (Haven't finished the episode yet.) I also don't know whether they're based on real people from the Masters and Johnson story and am conflicted as to the idea. I don't know if I'd like it better if they were invented or better if they're biographical.

True Blood: Fire in the Hole
I'm a forgiving viewer, but this episode (and season) feel Teen Wolf levels of disjointed. We spent how many episodes hanging around in a bar basement that might have been Fangtasia with a bunch of starving vampires who then die in a hail of anonymous gunfire and stakings because Sookie set herself as bait? That kid who got a talking-to from Sheriff Andy gets another talking-to as he dies? How are we supposed to care about any of this?

Penny Dreadful: Séance
Me too, Pendragon. For me this show keeps falling into a figurative uncanny valley. It's almost exactly like a great television show. Unimpeachable production values, superb performances from compelling actors, visual panache, check, check, check. And yet, it's NOT a great television show, is it? Something isn't there, something I expect and do not find, and whatever lacking element ought to exist, whatever oddity or distortion or limit it's up against, it leaves me uneasy. Restless. Perturbed.… [more]

Orphan Black: Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est
The guy who plays Paul projects an extraordinarily tightly wound quality, seething, resentful of the hold Dyad has on him. Also, I expect the actor himself probably can smile and laugh, probably doesn't carry himself so stiffly, with such careful, serious, obvious restraint. I get the feeling Paul could lay down some serious violence but rarely gets the chance given the circumstances of the story the show tells. So I don't think the actor is dull or rangeless, I think the… [more]
