“Charlie is the kind of guy where you just really want to believe him”
I read about this yesterday. In the end, he was brought to justice because the women he assaulted banded together. That is the only way women get justice.

I was surprised/impressed he got life in prison. The judge found that he was a threat to society and was unredeemable. That's unusual.

The “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” is dead.
I read in his obit. that he once said he liked playing these smarmy characters because they are so well-defined. I thought that was an interesting take, and probably true! I doubt he ever had to turn to the director to ask what the character's motivation was.

I think also it speaks to his acting ability that I really, really, really never liked him at all - because he always played gross, terrible people - well!

Kudos to him for a successful and… [more]

Avalanche!
Timdiggerm, Merriam Webster would like word:

Avalanche: 1st definition: a large mass of snow, ice, earth, rock, or other material in swift motion down a mountainside or over a precipice.

But, you know, Wikipedia, I guess?
posted to MetaFilter by Toddles at 6:04 AM on May 2, 2024
Brittanica:

There are various kinds of avalanches, including rock avalanches (which consist of large segments of shattered rock), ice avalanches (which typically occur in the vicinity of a glacier), and debris avalanches (which contain a variety of unconsolidated materials, such as loose stones and soil).

National Geographic:

During an avalanche, a mass of snow, rock, ice, soil, and other material slides swiftly down a mountainside. Avalanches of rocks or soil are often called landslides.

Also your wikipedia link has this at the start:

This article is about the sliding of large masses of snow. For rock and debris avalanches, see Landslide. For other uses, see Avalanche (disambiguation)..

They are all Avalanches! Give it up.

This Was Village Life in Britain 3,000 Years Ago
I loved reading about this. It was the small things that I found most interesting - they used nesting bowls! They didn't have shared/communal houses, but rather repeated many of the spaces (bedroom, kitchen etc) in each house). I thought it was most interesting that it was over a river, and I was wondering if that was for waste or for drinking water.

Depp v Heard: who trolled Amber?
So gross, but yes, please more of this has to come out. It was so obvious at the time - not that many people care that deeply about Johnny Depp, the only explanation was a bot army.

No Vehicles In The Park
I only did 8, so this may have come up later on, but if he wanted to make his point he should have included:
Electric bicycles (this is a real area of controversy in parks and other areas as to whether it is a "vehicle")

you’re so good at it, you could be a professional
It's very sad that people are so sucked into the 'your wedding day must be not only so very special to you but also look so very glamorous' that they're prepared to hire people to pretend to be their best friend to make it so.

I think there is a lot of external pressure from family and possibly friend-groups on brides in particular that makes it so that this bridesmaid-for-hire is appealing. It's no different in my mind than a wedding planner. But… [more]

[STOP in the name of HUMANITY]
That's lame. My kids (ahem, not me, totally not me...ok me too) would have loved that movie. We are Coyote and Road Runner fanatics. For those looking for an updated version, check out Grizzly and the Lemmings - a homage to Coyote and Roadrunner in the best possible way. In addition to these cartoons being fun and clever, they do not rely on spoken language - making them more accessible for a wider audience.

We are both more isolated and less private than we’ve ever been
I have opinions on this piece, but I want to offer a counter narrative to the city that changes too much from the perspective of someone who went back this past year to the city I grew up in and seeing that it hadn't changed at all. It's still cosmopolitan and educated and lively in all the ways as when I left, but all the stores, restaurants, night clubs, and people were the same. It had the same problems, same drivers, the same food and the same...everything. People were still in the same… [more]

BLM lawyer's house searched, work product allegedly taken
Thanks for posting this, I read this one last night (thanks Metafilter for suggesting I add the LATimes to my news rotation - great coverage). The story is completely perplexing and should honestly be more widely reported on. The police said that they were looking for a young man and an air tag has pinging from that address, but they would not share the full search warrant (only last two pages). They showed up with a battering ram, ready to go. They photographed privileged attorney-client… [more]

If you like it, don't put a ring on it.
I posted this article, in part, because I grew up in an area where single/divorced affluent women "of a certain age", were pariahs. This was in a wealthy, educated and liberal community. Husbands, in some ways, were similar to handbags, you absolutely needed one and the more high-end, the better. Other than that, it didn't really matter who they were or if you liked them.

It was interesting to read that this has changed at least for a certain contingent - and… [more]

He also said he was a pastor. He then rented a retail space from a church, brought in other small food businesses and then ditched when rent was due sticking them with the bill. Then he disappeared. And now we know where he went...

You’re Supposed To Be Glad Your Tesla Is A Brittle Heap Of Junk
This perpetual hating on Tesla strikes me as very much "Old Man Yells at Cloud." The people who buy Teslas do not read Defector, I honestly question whether they actually read the news at all (with the exception of the three who will now comment below). People are going to keep buying Teslas because they are luxury cars with good features, a good charging network, and they are a status symbol.

Also, I'm not going to buy a Tesla because...I read the news.

How millennials learned to dread motherhood
My work wanted to be inclusive of families, so they scheduled a children's holiday party on a school day at 10am. American culture is so out of touch with parenthood/families/children, I can see why younger generations in the US are saying no thanks. As the article points out, if they do it, they are completely on their own and surrounded by people who are clueless.

That feel of convenience has always been a trick of perception
I didn't really connect with the arguments in this article at all. I prefer self check-out because it is slower and I'm not being raced through the line. I can also check prices as they are rung up and make sure I get my coupon/discounts. Also, it is the only way to make sure that my raw chicken doesn't end up in the same bag with the toilet cleaner, or the strawberries don't end up under the apples.

2. Polyamorous parents with additional partners is better for children.

A deep betrayal
Blue Jello Elf, I've been following this story and my impression is the conservatorship early was about getting him to play football for Ol' Miss. But later on, it is what allowed them to sell *his* story re: the Blindside. They and their children made money off the movie, and in my reading, it sounds like he did not. As conservators, his story was their story to sell.
