Tall car?
I've had a Bronco Sport for a few months now and like it! It gets 31+ mpg, has great rear cargo storage and is still somewhat fun to drive. It's surprisingly small, probably a good 8-10" shorter than my wifes 2016 Outback. My only two issues with it are the high front end, and the back seat legroom is a little small, but serviceable.

Asbestos Litigation
Thanks for all the great responses, this is super helpful! This whole thing blew up while I was out of the country and without reliable mobile coverage, so I probably missed a few of the calls where the basics were explained. After running our family business for more than a dozen years now, the closest I've been to a lawsuit is jury duty. I had a chance to speak with my local lawyer last night and got a bit better perspective. We're currently past discovery and my company was specifically named… [more]

Refusing a raise
Being a staffer is way different than being freelance. When I went from “permalancer” to in-house at a marketing agency, in was harder to turn down work and control my own workflow. Managers feel more entitled to your time and their ability to use you as a resource. If you have a good, long-term relationship as a contractor, you have more flexibility and can turn down work or take time off more at will. In short, it’s a feeling that the company owns you, and it exists on both sides of the… [more]

What bean-based meals aren't bland?
No discussion of beans in complete without mentioning Rancho Gordo. Their blog is packed (stuffed!) with tons of great recipes.

Dried beans are the most flavorful, and the pot liquor they produce is a great base for any soup or stew. I find beans are generally tasty on their own. Perhaps you're not using enough salt? As mentioned above, the addition of acid/fat/sugar will enhance any recipe.

Here's one of my all-time favorite chickpea recipes...… [more]

Also dropping in for Tenacious Tape. In addition to its reflectivity, it's a great waterproof patch. A friend has nearly made a Parka of Theseus with it.

Real Bicycles Vs. Stationary Bicycles: Differences in Use
Agreed with kbanas. If you get a good indoor setup with a smart trainer and Zwift, it can be a lot of fun.

I did RAGBRAI a few years ago and it was a blast. If you're an avid cyclist you should have no problem. For me, getting enough time in the saddle beforehand was my biggest concern, more so than level of fitness. RAGBRAI can be pretty leisurely if you want, with plenty of stops for beer and pie and pork tenderloin sandwiches.

Is there a good way to use up sweet coffee creamer?
Someone on a podcast recently mentioned that their parents would add it to scrambled eggs when growing up. She said it was good in the way that getting a little bit of maple syrup on your eggs is good. I personally can't even.

What's Chomsky referring to here regarding US and Syria?
To your second question, speaking very generally, when countries close off diplomatic relations, they often lose their avenues for intelligence gathering. If adversarial countries maintain even basic relations, that gives them the means to place assets on the ground through means such as aid agencies, development banks, diplomatic corps, weapons inspections teams and whatever other machinery of international government. Even in a country that has strained relationships with the US, like say… [more]

How do I MSG?
I keep a jar of MSG in my spice cabinet. It goes in most things savory -- soups, sauces, roasted vegetables. I also add it to rice, grains and beans while cooking. Use it very sparingly, maybe around an 1/8 of a teaspoon if you're cooking for four. I personally find it enhances saltiness too, so ease up on the salt until you get a feel for it.

Best of the worst tourist traps NY to LA
As you're crossing the Ohio Turnpike, detour south on I-71 to Mansfield, Ohio, where you'll find Biblewalk, which consists of reclaimed wax figures dressed for scenes from the Bible. Nearby you can also visit the Ohio State Reformatory where they filmed parts of Shawshank Redemption.

The best way to wash stubborn dishes?
I use something that I have found to be better than Barkeeper's Friend: Powdered Brewer's Wash.

I agree, PBW is awesome, but it is also very expensive. A good substitute is OxiClean mixed with phosphate-free TSP.

How do you turn down an offer of friendship in a kind way?
I'd have no problem ghosting, or just being rude. Arguably, that would be harder with #2 than #1. And I'm someone who enjoys making new adult friends, but I waste no time with someone who isn't going to respect my boundaries.

Swordfish Meatloaf
And really tuna patties made from canned tuna would be another common analog.

I ate these growing up -- canned tuna, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, garlic powder, browned in a skillet with some kind of fat. I remember liking them but not sure I can abide by the idea as an adult.

How to make fried rice healthier?
Yes, go very light on the oil and use non-stick - you'd be surprised how little you need. Up the veg ratio (with frozen veg if you need convenience). I personally like egg or small cubed chewy tofu. Hit it with a sprinkle of MSG and a shot of toasted sesame oil at the end.

How to talk to my teenage son about not leaving evidence of masturbation
I just kind of called my son out on it in a somewhat casual way. "Hey, I know what the lotion and tissues are from. Whatever, I don't care, I do it too. Just clean up after yourself. Like seriously. No one needs to be picking that up after you."

Help me like tofu better
My basic cooking method is baking it in cubes or slabs. After pressing the tofu, I cut it into half inch slabs or cubes. Then I spray a baking sheet with cooking spray, neatly arrange the cubes and sprinkle generously with salt (see here!), then bake in a 400'F oven for about 30 minutes. The result is flavorful little nuggets that can be thrown into any soup, stew or stir fry, or on top of a bowl of noodles, or mixed in with steamed veggies and rice, or topped on a salad, or just eaten out of… [more]

I don't recommend it from a health & safety standpoint, but I love pizza left out overnight. It just hits different.

In our house, leftover baked goods generally go unrefrigerated -- cinnamon rolls, quick breads, donuts, cookies. My wife's homemade cakes stay in the fridge, but that's mainly so the frosting holds its shape.

Looking for a chickpea recipe that will go well with tachin
Cooking chickpeas from dried beans produces a wonderfully flavorful broth. Try sautéing some onions and garlic, then cooking a pound of dried chickpeas in it. When the chickpeas are tender, throw in a couple of handfuls of spinach or other sturdy greens. This is one of my favorite things over rice with a dollop of sour cream.

Bowling Shoes as seen in the Big Lebowski?
The shoes that "Saddam" is holding are a pair of Cobra TCR-1, but in a custom color (or perhaps painted). The shoes that The Jesus is wearing likely don't exist in the wild. The Linds semi-custom are your best bet.

Alternatively, you turn any shoe into a bowling shoe by gluing a slide sole to the bottom.

Moving to Non-prescribing Therapist ... How to Get Meds?
My therapist works directly with my GP via written communication. The therapist provides the GP with the diagnosis, some narrative about my situation, and a recommendation of which meds. The GP then discusses it with me and refines the recommendation and dosage. It has been a great approach. Granted, I have a high level of trust in both my therapist and GP, and they had an established relationship prior.

College of Wooster
I graduated from Wooster in 1995. I entered the school completely ignorant of politics and left as a PC-minded, progressive-thinking, Democratic-voting liberal arts graduate.
