Roofman
I'm quite surprised at the lack of internal motion detectors at a big box store like that. Given how easy it would be for a person to hide in a stack of boxes while the staff closes up, I don't see how it is not mandatory.

The deal is he's not as relevant
I never liked Seinfeld a whole lot because the characters were so deeply unlikable. Now I realize that's because Alexander, Dreyfus and Richards are gifted actors, and Jerry Seinfeld is genuinely deeply unlikable.

Do you know your mollisols from your alfisols?
I mess around with our county's GIS maps a lot, and discovered they include soil ratings and classifications. I was shocked to see there are dozens of different soil types here in Summit County alone!

Welcome the new Overlords
Capitalism and Communism are about as relevant to modern society as buggy whips are.

You can still beat the shit out of someone with a buggy whip, though. Just because the tools of the state are outmoded doesn't mean they are no longer effective measures of oppression.

We Need To Talk About Trader Joe's
So on the one hand, TJ-brand Pringles are "duping" but also the companies who make them are cooperating? What, exactly, is the misdirection here? Who cares if Golden Rounds are actually Ritz? They're cheaper, which is the point.

My next door neighbor is a product manager for packaging at Smuckers. I've asked him the same question. Apparently it's a big deal for major brand name food manufacturers to not sell private label versions of their… [more]

Iowa vs LSU rematch for Final Four
I'm not a huge basketball fan, but watched the game last night, and wow, that was a great game. Iowa was down significantly in the second quarter, then slowly ate away at that deficit up to the half. Then the first shot of the third quarter, Clark dropped a devastating three-pointer and it was clear how the rest of the game was going to go.

A celebration of Paris café culture returns after more than a decade
Upon reading my first thought was, 200 servers for a race? What a waste of energy and computing power. Glad to see it's much more French than that.

Texas Red...and Other Chili Recipes
"How is it different from spaghetti bolognaise with a lot of chilli?"

That has spaghetti. Chili is sometimes served on macaroni, though more usually with rice. I hope this clears things up.

The latter is chili-mac. The former is huh?

And I legit teared up when that Eater story got to the closing of Larry's Main Entrance. Not that it was a tearjerker, but because the sauerkraut balls were that good. That place was legendary.

hippybear: I'll take a look at the frozen bag of store-bought sauerkraut balls I have at home to see if there is cream cheese in them. I'm not 100% sure about the ones I had yesterday for lunch from On Tap. Larry's definitely had it. I'm not sure I'd consider it a required ingredient. I'll get my sister's take when I talk to her tomorrow.

I think things to focus on would be the ratio of kraut to meat to cream cheese. If not using cream cheese, then some other binder… [more]

Oh man, sauerkraut balls are the best thing ever. EVAR. They are A Thing here in Akron. Most bars and restaurants around here have their own version, and we can buy them frozen at the local Acme. My sister and I have talked about doing a sauerkraut ball party, where everyone brings a dozen of their favorite. Maybe I should take up the mantle on that FPP?

But back on topic, my wife grew up in northern central Iowa, and yeah, I was just eating some of these while were we… [more]

I've been enjoying it so far. I've had to follow tons of people to get an active timeline (and don't attract many followers with my ham-based humor). I hope it starts getting popular with the podcasts I listen to. So far, few of them or any of their hosts or producers seem to be on. I've found a few MeFites that I followed on twitter. I just added bsky to my profile if anyone wants to find me.

The Paranormalization of the Plastic Bag
Someone has probably already made this comment, as I'm only half-way through the piece and haven't started the thread yet, but...
Winzen soon left General Mills and formed his own balloon company, Winzen Research, which manufactured plastic balloons as tall as 20-story buildings. Sometime around 1950, Moore took Winzen’s place as head of aeronautical research and development at the cereal company.

We are both more isolated and less private than we’ve ever been
That was a very interesting article. I've grown so fatigued by the tech industry and SF's place in our zeitgeist that much of it rang true. Having grown up in midwest suburbia, I've since had the opportunity to live in places from small rural college towns to an apartment a few blocks off Times Square. Somehow through all this I've never been the victim of property or physical crime. I really enjoyed SF when I last visited some twenty years ago, but I couldn't imagine going there today. I think… [more]

I love this so much. The first I learned about NIST and the world of standards and measurements was in the mid 90s after I had just moved to DC. I was having beers at the Big Hunt right off DuPont Circle when I struck up a random conversation at the bar with a physicist who worked there. I’m still blown away by the concept.
