Seeking more weirdo’s hoards of treasures
Right around the corner from me is the now grandly titled "USC Pacific Asia Museum", which really started life as the home/shop/studio display space for Grace Nicholson who was eccentric as all get out and specialized in collecting artifacts from around Asia as well as Native American tribes (back when that was acceptable and not at all looked at with a withering eye). It's very odd to turn the corner of the backside of the Parks and Rec City Hall and run into a strange tall building… [more]

I want to fall in love.. (with Boston)
Man, when I moved for college to Boston from Florida it took me a full year to learn to love the city.

I hated having everyone up on top me.

When I finally graduated, I was sad for moving away. Hell I still am.

Go have a beer at the Publick House in Allston.

sophisticolism
Trumer's cool, did you get the cool glass to go with your tour.

They also do one technique that makes me shake my head, the malt de-husking. Only brewery I've ever heard of that removes the husk from the whole mash (not just the dark malts ala German Carafa) before mixing some of the husk material back in at the finish.

To my brewer's brain it sounds like a fine way to make a giant barley pancake, but they pull it off. Tasty pils too. Proves the… [more]

Fatherless
Right there with you, my biological father and mom divorced when I was one. While my situation is a little different in that my biological father is still alive (afaik), I often run the same questions through my head. How would I be different if I'd been raised with a father?

So far, it's been enough for me to hold two things closely:

1) I have to admire the hell out of my step-dad for adopting my sister and I. Even though he passed when I was… [more]

Make my car go away for free?
Same thing happened to my former roomie. The DMV worker was correct about the fact that you won't hear from the impound guys/tow company if they can make enough money from the sale of your car.

However, given the rate at which the impound fees gather and the fact that most cars being impounded aren't going to cross the magical cost mark in auction to get over the hump, the DMV guys should have warned you if they were being nice.

So the long… [more]

Post-MMO Energy Crisis
Depends upon what's easier for you to start rolling with. For me, I lost over 70 pounds over the past year mostly by focusing back on what I ate. As I ate better and my body felt better without all of the crap that I'd be dropping into it. Once I felt better, I found I had better motivation to do other things and my life has become infinitely less tedious.

Of course, I'd still like to find some way to get over this only sleeping 4-5 hours a night bit, but that's for another question. :)

Sensitive salad or dessert
Just did this for a judging this weekend.

3 cups Wild Rice, cooked and cooled
1 cup Jasmine Rice, steamed and cooled
1 Red Onion, diced
1 Green Onion, sliced
1 Red Pepper, julienned
Cashews (optional obviously)

Mix of dried fruit, roughly chopped (I used dried cherries, cranberries, aprictos, and figs)

Dressing made from Olive oil, mustard, white wine vinegar, a… [more]

What can I do with a couple hundred pounds of sour oranges?
Myself, I'd go and make mead with it. I just recently did a beer that used Blood Oranges (http://www.maltosefalcons.com/recipes/20060402.php)

Lot of fun. I managed to get about 10 liters from 50 pounds of blood oranges.

If you wanted to make mead, the easiest way to do it would be to take 4 gallons (~15 liters) of juice and mix it with 17 lbs of honey in a sanitized bucket, add a little wine yeast and walk away for a few months. (Somewhat… [more]

East Coast vs West Coast stereotypes
For me it's odd because I grew up in a small town in Florida, went to school in Boston and have lived in LA for a decade. (gah. damn time)

For me, growing up, Florida was laid back, personable, everyone knew you, lalalalala, Norman Rockwell with palm trees and shorts. (Of course, not everyone liked you. There were still plenty of damn bigoted rednecks and my hometown had more churches than bookstores and bars by a factor of 10 to 1)

Boston, drove… [more]

What physical changes happen when you stop drinking and when?
Since I'm a brewer, beer judge and beer writer, it's a bit tough for me to cut out the drinking entirely from my diet. (Funny that) But I do notice that when I've gone on a stop for a while, I do feel things speed up a bit.

This does have the cost that my normal 4-5 hours of sleep per night turns into my normal 3-4 for quite a while and never fully stablizes back into the close to 5 hour pattern.

Even with all the beer activities in my diet… [more]

They don't exactly teach this in Sunday School
Well you're thinking of Onan of Genesis 38:9 fame:

"But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother."

The big trick of interp is whether or not the sin of Onan was masturbation or his refusal to perform his brotherly duty under levirate marriage rules.

In Catholicism, my religion of… [more]

The definitive spit-roast whole pig.
Last year while setting up a festival for my club, I got stupid and decided that it would be a good idea to have our then club chef spit roast a whole pig. (Mostly, I wanted to do it and I thought it would be a sight.)

I put together a writeup of what my guys did.
Big Pig and the accompanying photos.

For a group of about 70, we used a whole pig of about 120-140 lbs, gutted. Cleaned out, salted and then stuffed with another 40lbs of… [more]

Some Like It Hot
Vinegar - for basic things it might as well just be cider vinegar, but seriously... norally salsa fresca, it's just a bunch of chopped tomatoes (I prefer de-gelled romas), onion, garlic, lime, jalapeno, salt, pepper, cumin, and lime and cilantro to finish. (No food processor.. that just makes salsa mush)

As you go further into the world of salsa making you'll cross through and into a world of no tomatoes including salsa that consists of little more than minced onion,… [more]

Can I go to Bonnaroo and not smell like I'm at Bonnaroo?
Thinking of going again this year. My experience a few year gave me this advice...

- Take less than you think you'll need. But make sure a book's in there.
- Bring a camelback or some sort of always present water device.
- Sunscreen. Dont be a lobsterback
- Don't bring anything you'll be annoyed losing or have wrecked by the mud. (Particularly footwear)
- On that same note, keep an eye on keeping your gear water safe.… [more]

Help me die from eating my own homemade dark chocolate
What little I know about the making of chocolate says that it's a raging pain.

Having said that, I'm the last person to dissuade anyone from following a time consuming lark for a hobby. I mean, I just finished doing a champagne beer. That only took about 9 months.

2nd person perspective narratives
The closest thing I can think of in film is Robert Montgomery's version of Lady in the Lake. But really in that movie the viewer is Marlowe.

Man does that movie really prove why it's poor to shoot everything in that form of perspective. It's dull.

Motivation lacking for weight loss...
I was going through the same thing last year. Been drastically overweight since college and beer entered my life. Kept the same thing going on.. "Ahh.. I need to lose weight" and then never did.

What finally got me going? A bet. The family bet me $300 that I couldn't lose 60 lbs last year (Was at about 265 in Jan 2005 - not good for a 5'10" man).

The way I did it is echoed by some of the previous comments. I hate things like… [more]

Lines going up my TV. GRRRRRR.
Do the bars persist if you move the tv to a different location? If not, it could be interference from a powerful magnetic field (like a transformer on the other side of the wall, etc)

Other possible thought: Are you feeding your gear from different circuits? Could be getting line noise from ground loops, etc.

Help my local elementary school
In answer to why you should pay for a service you aren't using (aka public schools). In the case of education it is in the best interest of society to make sure that everyone has the chance to be educated to the best of their abilities and desire, not the best of their means.

Yeah, it's an idealist point of view, but I'd be frankly scared of the widespread idiocy that would come with a weakening of the education system. (Moreso than what I see in much of life these days)… [more]

Why is beer more expensive than petrol?
I would also like to point out that unlike what most folks think, the profit margins on beer, particularly small batch brews (like from a microbrew) are horrifically slim. The amount of juggling that folks I know have done to keep their breweries open would make the average Barnum and Bailey clown weep with exhaustion.

Of course, folks like the A-B's, Coors, AmBev, SABMiller of the world benefit enormously from scale considerations. It's really sad to the craft beer lover.

Is "Please drink responsibly" a law?
Way completely voluntary and mostly a CYA measure both on the lawsuit angle and on the continuing fight behind progressive prohibition.

The biggest fear for the big breweries right now (aside from staunching the bleeding to distillers and vintners) is the same kind of increased moral and health regulation that surrounds tobacco. Since the breweries themselves don't generally contribute money to MADD (like the distillers, do) they need to make sure there are… [more]

How can I stop acting dumb around my girlfriend?
I'm no grand expert at any of these matters because I'm not in a long relationship, but... what I've found to be key with all of these things is just relax. If she/he knew you were smart when they entered the relationship with you, then it must have been an attracting factor. Presuming to kill/hide this attribute is a bit of insulting. (and please, make sure she doesn't want this supressed)

But as suggested above, don't ever be insufferable about being smart and that'… [more]

My home draft system likes to pur foamy beer!
How long between pours? And does this only really occur with the first pint pulled? If I'm remembering the Sanyo's right, they don't have force cooled towers, which will allow the beer in the relatively uncooled line to warm up and CO2 to outgas from solution. When you first open the tap, you'll get an explosive gas release and foam, which should settle out after a pour or two.

Otherwise, what length and ID of beverage hosing do you have? There's a long annoying science… [more]

The best thing you can do for your tower is find a way to rig up a draft into the tower. A lot of your better kegerators already have a hose rigged from the fan output of the cooler to the top of the interior of the draft tower.

If I remember the Sanyo's right, they don't use forced air cooling. It's just a wraparound cold plate. In that case you'd want to rig a fan right at the base of the tower.. anything will do like a little muffin fan from a computer, etc.

Father's Day woodcarving ideas?
Not a wood carver, but having my own passionate hobby, I'd like to recommend that you can never go wrong with fundamental ingredients.

A good tool combined with some piece of incredible/different/challenging wood for him to work on would give him both the reminder of your gift every time he works, but the craft produced from the wood serves as an everyday reminder that you knew enough and cared enough to bring something special.

Just a thought to enhance the gift.

I need a bicycle
I'm a semi-regular city commuter (in Los Angeles) and I highly recommend finding a "hybrid" or "city" bike (or one of the thousand of other silly names they assign to them).

Myself, I bought a lower end Specialized for around $300, brand new, and aside from a little bit of an annoying issue with the rear brake shifting and rubbing if I don't watch it, it's a charm. You should be able to find them for a song used.

Ahh homebrewing... something to finally force me to join mefi after a long time reading without feeling the need to post.

Now this is a topic close to my heart and liver and my wallet.

Other's have said it, but by far the best thing in the universe you can do is go read howtobrew.com (John Palmer's local to me; good egg; knows what he's talking about) and then go find your local shop. Cultivate a relationship with them. Pick their brains.… [more]

Well.. hop pellets are real hops and they're generally used by most microbreweries. They store better and offer more of their goods to the beer than whole leaf hops do.

But to get started with ghetto all-grain.. easiest thing to do is find yourself a 40qt cooler, some copper piping and tubing and a pot (aluminum is fine short term) and burner big enough to handle 7.5 gallons of liquid at a boil.

Do that and you can get started with an all grain… [more]

As for the question about the U-Brew (or a BOP to use the parlance of the industry) joints... Too much money, not enough control and lastly it's removing the most interesting aspect of the homebrewing process, you.
