Movie: Henry V
Love this movie as an adaptation and a feeling of what Shakespeare can feel like when done rousingly. (as opposed to read blankly by teenagers in a classroom)

Also, love that scene with Brian Blessed for that it's his plate armor and that he feels like menacing cannonball in that room.

But really that opening with Derek Jacobi as the chorus, the blood doth pump.

Time Team: Dig Two - Secrets of Wytch Farm - Dorset
It really did. I had the same confused feeling I used to have when Mick or Phil would point at the ground and tell Tony that you could see this cut mark here that mean XYZ - all I could see on the screen was brown and a slightly different shade of brown. :)

Movie: Django Unchained
I always feel like Django is two movies and the split point is when Schultz gets killed by Candie. The first part is a great Western full of mood and imagery. After Schultz's death, it becomes a grindhouse revenge flick. I definitely prefer the Western.

Fallout: The End
Y'all I wasn't prepared for how much my breath stopped at the end of that opening sequence with Cooper and his daughter trying to race away from the dropping of the bombs. I had to stop for a bit just to let that wonderful childhood fear wash through me.

The whole point of the Fallout series in general (between the games and other media) has been a deeply cynical exploration of nationalism, fascism, nuclear war and the continuing habit of parts of humanity to engage in wars that no one wins.

There's a lot of game lore and some of it's being hinted at - like the Enclave as the remnants of the corporate fascist state that the US had begun, the fact that Vault-Tec wasn't on the up and up about the nature of the vaults and… [more]

ejs - yes, in FO1/FO2 - they are very much so - in fact one of the themes for the BoS from the first FO game is called "Metallic Monks".

The exact nature/mission of the BoS varies from game to game as different creators do their thing with them - fascist controllers of pre-war tech with religious overtones, saviors of the wasteland, despotic helpers, etc.

And Fallout has the Truffaut "No Such Thing As An… [more]

The time jump was a last minute Beth idea for 3. It was originally supposed to be much closer to the day the bombs dropped but they changed their mind and it's had a hard ripple on things.

And I'll put Episode 2 up later tonight

I think for most fans of fallout, the big worry about the adaption was going to be how they adapted the tone. The aesthetic is pretty easy (they hit it out of the park though) and the grim violence, but the way the material veers between the downright silly to the outright distressing.

I mean in FO4 you play as a survivor of a Vault experiment and witness your partner be murdered and your infant son kidnapped who pops up into a post apocalypse wasteland where Fenway has… [more]

Fallout: The Head
I don't recall anything from the games that would be a direct one to one with Moldaver's raid on the vault - at least that you witness. Some of the action definitely felt like recreated combat, but afaik no one was ever drowned in a pickle barrel!

A lot of the FO experience with vaults is coming onto dead vaults, long since turned into horror shows with computer logs and holotapes providing you the backstory (if you find/read/listen to them). There are a few… [more]

There have been a few of the naive vaults -3 is a perfect example, 94 in FO76 is another. It never goes well except when it does like Vault City and Vault 81 in FO4 (but that has a whole story, don't it)

Fallout: The Target
Trying to think. We saw a pre-war Mr Handy in the birthday scene and we saw an assaultron “corpse” in Lucy’s Santa Monica wanderings

So the Fallout lore - spread across many different writers, companies, games is very dodgy. But the general number of publicly known vaults is 122 scattered across the country. The first FO game had 3 vaults, I think (12,13,15). FO2 add Vault 8. FO3 added 6 more vaults around DC NV added 7. FO4 added another 7 around Boston (plus one in Far Harbor) and 76 added another 6 around Appalachia

As for the radiation - one of the things in the FO universe is that the major… [more]

Episode 3 Thread Up

As for Shelter - the official word is "unless/until something is contradicted by one of the mainline games, things in Shelter may be considered canon". FO:Tactics, FO:BoS and the board games are pretty much non-canon.

Movie: Ishtar
I remember seeing this in the theaters because my mom was so excited to see Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman and maybe some of that shiny veneer of Romancing the Stone exoticism and adventure. (Reminds me I should go watch Jewel of the Nile again and see if it is as truly meh as my brain says)

I went along, because "hey movie, on the big screen! Ice cold air conditioning in florida! Woo!" and I just remember for 13 year old me sitting in the theater not getting… [more]

Monsieur Spade: Monsieur Spade
I don't know if anyone else watched this, but I could soak in the atmosphere of this show and Clive Owen did a great job as a very weary, reluctant and sardonic Sam.

I'd be curious to hear what others thought of the final resolution

Usually for me and a noir - I kinda expect to be baffled by the cast of characters and the machinations and I know that a number of noir stories have the protagonist borne along on the current, but yes - Alfre Woodward's "Canadian ex Machina" character felt a bit far on the helpliness of Sam in that situation. Did completely setup a second season in San Francisco.

Not entirely certain how I feel about the LeCarre-esque central plot with Zaid, but it forced me… [more]

Masters of the Air: Part Five
The numbers I've seen for US bomber crews are abysmal - something like a 16% chance of making it through 30 missions. The only worse assignment, in terms of survivability, was to be on submarine patrol.

Movie: The Princess Diaries
I have never actually seen this movie, but thankfully working for Disney when it was being marketed meant it was in my head and scored me $400 on Jeopardy in "Novel Characters". It made all my friends wonder how 34 year old me knew that answer. :)

Movie: Ferris Bueller's Day Off
I always wanted to be as clever as Ferris. I had a mad crush on Mia Sara (and was surprised her career didn't go farther).

Yes, Ferris is definitely a well-meaning jerk, but he's the inner imp that does in a way get his humility shoved in his face when he sees what the cost to Cameron will be.

Movie: Jennifer's Body
I agree that this movie used Megan Fox to her utmost (at least so far) and was absolutely hit by a massive wave of missing the point. Kinda reminds me of how much fight club was viewed as a straight "fuck yeah" commentary by so many young dudes (including me at the time)

I'm not really a horror type of person, but this one has some real sharpness to it

Special Event: Superbowl XVIII
That game certainly became a lot more interesting once Kansas City remembered they were a professional football team - then it become a rip snorter.

Still don't understand why Shanahan becomes so run adverse in his second half game plans. (I would assume it's partly defensive adjustment, but still CMC was ripping off runs in the 4th). Just like the Atl-NE overtime (also Shanahan), it felt inevitable to me that KC was going to win it.

Guitar player was H.E.R. (and I agree with you)

And I don't think rollerskating ever really went away in the black community as a thing. One of LA's last big skating rinks , at least from a press angle, is kept alive by skating nights catering to the community

Movie: True Lies
The villains are cartoons as they always are - and the movie definitely falls into that post cold war period of "shit, we can't make the Ruskies the bad guys". And I love most of it, except the damn strip tease scene. It's a great set piece, it's got a great comedic performance from JLC, but I can't get past the underlying cruelty of it.

Masters of the Air: Part One
I'm going to watch this and I know, just like the book (and the history) it's going to make me very angry at the Eighth's command for absolutely refusing to learn lessons from the meat grinder they were sending those young men into.

The book is brutal in terms of its depiction of the cost, waste, loss and sometimes stubborn idiocy that plagued the American air war in Europe. It's also peppered with stories of heroism and POWs that feel more classically "heroic WWII"

(Also, the book has a whole stretch that excoriates the Swiss for their "neutrality")

Atreides, I'm with you. I have so much warm glow nostalgia for the show that I'm a little worried that it will all have aged poorly, but I'm still going to happily revisit it and enjoy my time back there. Reacher: Fly Boy
Definitely on the bandwagon of preferring season 1 over 2. Two was perfectly enjoyable in a turn off your brain sort of way. (Gilded Age, I do the same, except it's the clothes and the waiting for the oyster fork uprising) This season coasted a long way on Alan Ritchson's charm, Maria Sten's compentance and Serinda Swan's eyebrows.

I know we had a lot of violence, go figure, but even there they soft pedaled one book moment with the helicopter pilot. They didn't let him… [more]

I think they were just trying to drive home that "AM" did everything to keep the number of people who knew who he was to a minimum. (Hence the whole thing with DHS saying that they didn't even have any real photos of him)

Reacher: Burial
The DHS stuff I handwaved because of his brother, but I still got completely annoyed that they continued the idea that car doors are magic bullet stoppers.

I can't recall precisely, but I could have sworn in the book the shipment got jumped somewhere really desolate like the Mojave which would make more sense than a mountain road a short drive from near Denver.

But still - good "turn the brain off and zone" entertainment.

Movie: Rambo: First Blood
Its a great and flawed movie at the same time. Dennehy needs a mustache to twirl. Crenna needs a monocle. Stallone is jacked, but not inflated and does a great job of looking hunted/haunted

Honestly, I feel like between the inclusion of the spitting legend and then the sequels this move loses a lot of luster. (Weird how gung ho, jingoistic the sequels get - ah the 80s)

The Gilded Age: In Terms of Winning and Losing
No confirmation on that. I hope he gets a rare Julian Fellowes happy ending.

I agree that they wrapped up the obvious big threads to make folks satisfied if they didn't get a third season.

Threads that could be picked up:

Larrian/Marry - that's a whole negotiation and I'm still waiting for the pregnant widow!
Borden/Mrs Gates - my one true ship

Reacher: ATM
I feel like Alan Ritchson was specially grown in a lab tank for the role of Reacher. The whole series is straight up competence porn, but I'm kinda still here for it when I want to turn my brain off.

(Also, kinda annoyed the swapped NY in for LA, but I'm biased since I live here in LA)

They've definitely made his Reacher into something slightly less mean than he was in the early books at least. I remember that in Killing Floor the book (basis for season 1), there was a really nasty streak to some of Reacher's behavior like when he taunts the kingpin dad about "where's your boy", after he had killed him earlier in a trap that Reacher setup. (If I recall they ended up making the son the ultimate kingpin)

I suspect some of that is just that the… [more]

I'm listening to the audio book version of it right now and at this point I can't read a Scalzi story without hearing Wil Wheaton. Also agree Thorzdad, I love the one-offs with a quick jolt of world building without having to bear the structural weight of an epic multi book arc.

The other one I've seen is that Marian's father's worthless RR stocks are suddenly worth something, but I like the idea of Rev. Luke being the families savior more because it puts Ada in the drivers seat.

I failed to mention that I actually really appreciated that they allowed Agnes to be so supportive despite her misgivings demonstrating that she's not totally a snarky monster.

The Gilded Age: Warning Shots
I'm really hoping they don't shy away from the violence of the labor struggle in favor of "George, Noble Robber Baron" Almost to a man, they were entitled pricks with little respect for that great ideal of "the individual". Love Has Won: Love Has Won
My wife and I sat and watched this whole thing with jaws dropped. It felt like the first time I'd ever really seen a cult where the leader was just as abused as the followers and that the real con artist in the cult was the guy with all the money at the end of the day.

As that third episode went on and she got weaker and was actively dying all I could do was recoil at the cruelty of it all.

I kinda had the feeling that the Duke is purposely a bit of a drip to heighten the absurdity of them fighting over him.

And I don't think we're supposed to know who dropped the dime to Mrs. Astor.
