Does Ed Balls still count?
I'm terminally online and have been since sometime in the mid 80's with BBSes, but this whole thread definitely shows that I'm not that online because I a Twitter sized hole in my knowledge of online humor.

G__d_ye, P_t S_j_k
Pat Sajak's deplorable politics aside - he was a great game show host, but man it's gotta be a hell of a drug being that loved for hosting that it can lead you to those sorts of views.

One memory I have of my audition for Jeopardy is that they held the WoF auditions at the same time. Jeopardy tryouts were in a pair of small conference rooms like you would be in to do some weird corporate training or time share promotion. WoF, in the meanwhile, was over in a giant hotel… [more]

Many of our ideas around sexuality and queerness are a little incoherent
I came in to point out memories of seeing "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche" being promoted as a kid on like the Today show. Took me until my adulthood to learn that it was satirizing that dumb idea.

But what do I know - I usually make tortas and frittatas because I don't usually have the patience to futz around with a crust.

as much about the fear of appearing gay as appearing weak

they're the same picture

I've thought before that part of the reason why people seem to freak out more about gay men and transfem folks is that whole toxic soup of "abandoning traditional masculinity is being weak, becoming weak, etc"

This is not to imply that transmasc and lesbians and others don't catch a raft of crap, because of course they do, it… [more]

Sober Nation
As the beer guy all I can say is I had a long run of too much during COVID and then quit for 3 months before slowly easing back in and now a days I'll drink at functions and otherwise have a couple of beers on a Friday. I'm not perfect, but who is?

Its definitely forced me to explore more fermentation spaces because fermentation is my jame (er... pickle?)

We need a far more violent operation than high-speed rotating knives
I'm a recovered hot sauce guy - back in my 20's I absolutely would have been after the 10 fold concentrate stuff. These days when I ferment hot sauces, I really do focus on making something that's spicy, but not blow off your nose. Like 2-3x the heat of a tabasco but with flavor that's more than just vinegar.

But what these guys are doing - that's my jam. Science for fun. And yeah, better sound would be nice. I don't suffer from misophonia but the chewing was a bit too much for my taste.

fast food, slow reflection, aliens, alienation, research, & authenticity
Aha - thought I was getting Taco Tico vibes! There was one in my childhood town of Pine Hills, FL. We also did the Subway thing when I was growing up because poor. We all ate Veggie subs until we got that magical 10th stamp and then it was what you wanted - usually a Subway Club for me, a BMT for my sister.

Thanks for the story!

Pride Flag identification
I mean it is messy and confusing and constantly shifting. We're in a period of transition, exploration and greater understanding and therefore symbology will keep shifting. I figure my job as a cishet white straight dude is look around, go "ok" and keep on being as kind to people as I can be.

To see the completely shifting and overwhelming panoply of flags, markers, identifiers is as fascinating to me as cracking open an atlas as kid and learning about… [more]

"I Spent Three Years Talking to Boys. Here’s What I Found"
I'm very much of the generation of "boys don't cry". I got relentlessly bullied in school for being the different, sick, smart and ungodfully poor kid with a dead dad in a small private Catholic school. My mom and I both got told by my teachers that "you're a good kid, but you're too sensitive - that's why they pick on you". I went through a couple of years where my default reaction to any provocation after my dad died was to throw hands, quickly, repeatedly and without… [more]

So rare to see a dude just flat out say they share what is basically exactly my entire lifelong experience being a woman, and thank you for this! I am sorry the women in your immediate life are not ready to hear that and see the parallels.

Existing printers are at or near capacity
I just remember like a decade ago I had a book go through an emergency print run because of a shortfall in copies. They went and printed those in the US to beat the delay in Chinese printed copies. In order to keep the pricing the same, they reduced the quality and man was it noticeable. The US copies are fainter and less rich appearing. The blacks are grays and the paper isn't as crisp/sturdy. The Chinese copies had rich blacks and a sheen to them, but were still cheaper.… [more]

2 O.E.
The secret is - as always - practice.

Like my wife likes eggs OE on buttered toast. and clavdivs - that's why I use the timing of the toast. I know that the time to toast the bed, pop, juggle the pan, butter the bread is just the right amount of time to perfectly cook the whites of two fresh from the firdge Grade A large eggs.

But that's practice is a specific application. probably made her a couple hundred eggs that way.

The Little Free Thread Library
I have many books, but I have far fewer than I did. Being the son of an English teacher, husband to another English teacher and grandson of a professor and of a librarian, this is hardly shocking. I have gobs of Kindle books shared with my mom, tons of reference material and yet it was still hard as hell to get rid of things when I needed more space.

But things I still have because of memories:

Sending goods by train has a much lower carbon footprint
They've been trying for years to get a train service running from the Port of LA out to the distribution warehouses in San Berdoo. It would be so much more efficient than what they do know of either offloading from the near port train yards or one the east LA (or south of DTLA) piggyback yards.

But it gets fought and fought and fought over and nothing ever happens with it.

The 180 year rematch: USA vs Canada opens the cricket Men's T20 world cup
I wonder how much of the growth in cricket here in the US can be attributed to the large influx of South Asian tech workers? The folks I managed are absolutely obsessed with cricket and can rattle off stats and facts of all sorts of matches like I can with Red Sox games of my youth.

I'm all for more varied experiences, but even as a die hard baseball fan and with the help of my colleagues, I still find cricket to be near impenetrable. Guess I just need to get watching!

"half-remembered and half-created, neither real nor ideal"
I do admire that they avoided the easy trap of "god like character from your dreams/alternate reality/etc explains it all and delivers the moral"

It's a nice little slice of dreaminess mixed with the utter despair of feeling like you're floundering.

Also, another good avoidance in that Andrew (good name, I like it.:) ) has a supportive community of friends around him and he's not "sad lonely LGBTQ person in a tragedy of solitude"
