Movie: Hit Man
99% amazing. agree with all the above. there were some really neat callbacks to film noir both in soundtrack, cinematography, plot......the charisma, chemistry (&hotness!) of the leads was offscale.

but.....oh man, the last 1%? that ending đź’© . such a tonally jarring change, 5?7? years later, they look identical! motherhood & apple pie!!!?? talk about NOT sticking the landing.

I want the director's cut to end at the cop's body stopping breathing; maybe a monologue?

Movie: Hell or High Water

I enjoyed this movie, however I am troubled by the inclusion of graphic sexual abuse

where was that?

True Detective: Night Country, Episode 6 (finale)
We *loved* the indigenous women's revenge reveal. Absolutely A+ - we gasped with enjoyment - for all the themic and historical reasons described above.

Rose's character! Her ultracompetence, being a soigneé fuckin' wolf-gutter and corpse disposer....was awesome. . Her ending monolog; one of the few satisfying ones that we heard.

I loved, loved, loved the still, quiet conversations between Navarro and Qavik. More of this please....… [more]

True Detective: Night Country: Part 4
the interpersonal stuff (Qavik and Evangeline are amazing, I love the stepdaughter), the cinematography - the long shots of the landscape, and the existential dread are great

the supernatural-on-a-plate and the fucking jump scares are so . fucking. CHEAP.

get rid of the fucking horror shlock.

True Detective: Night Country: Part 3

So far the most disturbing, upsetting scene for me has been Danvers forcing her daughter to "wipte that shit" off her face. I hated watching that so much.

absolutely a guaranteed way to get the kid to get a real tattoo of that on her face!

Movie: Predestination
Came to this reading about Sarah Snook performing 26 roles in a single performance of The Picture of Dorian Gray and this being a harbinger of her scary talent. They were right; she was excellent.

The level of anxiety over things like Mothma getting picked up by the iSB, when we clearly know she won't, is a major credit to the writers and creators.

we know no such thing!

we don't know any of the peril or woes that the people who survived till Rogue One started underwent. we know they survived, but that's it.

Thanks mefi, I stopped at e6 and didn't watch these last two. the recaps saved me 2 hours of my life.

Were there any good bon-mots or deadpans? Please let me know!

Reacher: New York's Finest
yeah this show gets dumber by the minute. It's a shame because the lead actors clearly are having fun with the characters, and the infrequent deadpan bon-mots ("informal tu") are goood, but the majority of the writing is SO. BAD.

It has "A-Team" level of plot armor. Some presumably well-trained guy's spraying reacher with an automatic rifle with dozens of shots from a helicopter with him standing in the open. and no hit? but he bangs away with his… [more]

Reacher: Burial
More and more disappointing, more and more video-game like, in spite of the charisma of the main characters.

Plus despite its veneer of antiauthoritarianism thru reacher and his renegades, this is a show in love with all of the symbols of power and flag and faith.

Slow Horses: Footprints
yeah on one hand, the tearney.tavener chat was magnetic because of the actors charisma and distdain.

but the script? serial monologue please confess all now in expository dialogue a la james bond villain.... was..... WEAK.

beneath the good writing of the books.

this is becoming a worse show, not a better one. more political machination, less explosions, PLEASE.

Movie: The Menu

While I can, actually, believe that the final result of the world's most intensely over-the-top luxury fine dining restaurant is a death cult, I really do not believe that a mega uber hyper ultra rich person restaurant on a private island with a live-in staff and infinite high end ingredients could subsist on $15,000 ($1,250 x 12 diners) per day.

Star Trek: Picard: The Last Generation
a few lolz, lots of well-earned emotional beats by good actors in the service of nostalgia, but as far as sci-fi, as far as story….where to fucking begin????

Plot Armor for everyone: Check
Easy defeat of omnipotent multi-year plans by a thoughtful enemy just by a few pew-pews: Check
Dumb technobabble/deus-ex-machina to drive the hero’s quest forward: Check

but it really doesn't get the power of audio recordings.

I really think that luthen using his own, unscrambled voice to have a wee chat with the empire ship is an error. Like all the chats had in public spaces

I think Mon Mothma is going to marry her daughter off to that thug's son, and I think both her husband and her daughter are going to think it's the only good idea she's had all year, and I think it's going to destroy her. God, this show is SO GOOD.
