[MeFi Site Update] May 15th
"It's 25 years old, and despite some infighting, losing members, and the same old interface as 1999, MetaFilter soldiers on as an internet community, a community as the internet was first envisioned. When the rest of the internet has been reduced to how much advertising can we sell, MetaFilter is mostly a community of volunteers. A community of people working together, who do not always agree, to create a space where people can be heard."

Pendant alert:

...so our expenses exceeded our profits this month.

Our expenses exceeded our revenues this month. There were no profits. Profits result from revenue exceeding expenses. When expenses exceed revenues, there are losses.

"it does detract from what the site does normally..."
part of that is because I write a question and ponder what AskMe would say and that answers the query

Hmm. I was taught many decades ago to ask myself the question, What would Frank (Sinatra) do? and whatever I came up with would be the best course of action.

Happy Birthday AskMe!!

I swear, I saw it with my own two eyes.....
In the 80s, I was at a Grateful Dead concert in literally the front row (standing) against the wall. I swear Jerry looked at me and smiled. Later in the show, I was pretty sure he was playing flavored notes. Lots of Cherry and some lemon. None of the friends with me could confirm that, but then again, none of them could confirm even their names at that point. It was REAL.

I also swear I saw Warren Haynes in a Target in Mt. Kisco NY, but my gf who was with me had no… [more]

MetaFilter: The Quickening
Once per calendar day.

Back in the day, when I was at The University, ATMs would only let you withdraw $100 per calendar day. Well, on a Friday night when you and your buddies were trying to score an 8-ball, you would withdraw your $100 at 11:59, wait two minutes and take out another $100. (Then, when you woke up from that mess, you would realize that you just spent all your monthly budget in the first week of the month.) Regardless, it worked as a governor. I… [more]

We Need to Talk About Ableism
I clicked on Bottlecap's account link. As noted, they have buttoned. What struck me for the first time is the verbiage on the account. "This account is disabled." I certainly appreciate there are several meanings for the word "disabled", but could we change the verbiage to something else like, say, "inactive"? This account is inactive or This account has been closed.

positive feedback
I am not real big on singling out people publicly, not because I don't have people to acknowledge, but because I do not want to risk leaving someone out. So, having said that, thank you to the entire staff, mods, programmers, volunteers, etc. and thank you to all who contribute their knowledge, expertise, comments, observations, enthusiasm, passionate opinions and do so with good intentions and dignity.

However, I do want to single out one person, jessamyn, for her… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Updates, Conclusions and To-Be-Continueds
Here is a situation that has been bothering me for decades. First, I have to recall my HS or Junior high school science. I start with the assumption that air is everywhere except in a vacuum. If that is pretty much accurate, why doesn't my bread get stale in the bag? It gets hard if I leave it on the counter. I do have a vague recollection that they put nitrogen or some other gas than oxygen in the bread plant when bagging the freshly cooked loaf. When I leave a slice of Martin's on the counter,… [more]

2023 MeFi Fundraising Month
The reason for the change of stance on the legal format of MetaFilter is not relevant. I am quite sure you could keep asking lawyers until you found an answer that was satisfying to whatever your position is. Trump did it with the election and now he is indicted, but his defense may be I was relying on legal advice (of a moron aka Giuliani).

Having run a company myself, I can tell you that there are way more legal grey areas than one with the legal liability would… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Animal Facts
When I was in college, my dog learned to pull the towel on my mini-fridge door and roll or bat a can of beer across the room to me. Only problem was the cans were all shaken up when I got them. I think he wanted that because the first few times I didn't wait to open them, he would happily lap up the overflowing beer. Also, he never learned to close the damn door on the fridge.

I only met a Gately once....
I had a friend a while back whose legal name was BJ No periods and no spaces, just BJ. When he was asked why, if he was in a mood, he would answer, "Because my dad said I was one load that should have been swallowed." If someone pressed him on what BJ was short for, he would look them in the eye and say, "Michael." His close friends actually called him "Cutter" which was short for Honeycutt or BJ Honeycutt.

Metatalktail Hour: Mama Said
My mother, rest in peace, had the unique ability to talk to little children for a long time. She would call my house when my kids were 7-8-9 and around those years and talk to my boys for like 20 minutes each and my daughter for like 45 minutes. My daughter would bring me the phone after the kids had been on the phone with her for well over an hour. I was always surprised she was still on the phone. I used to then get updates on my own kids from her.

I asked her how she… [more]

My mother was big on family. She would say that you can disagree all you want with your brothers in private or home but you always stick up for your brothers r in public.

That was abused by my older brother. He would get in fights or even pick a fight knowing I would get involved if need be. Broke my hand in a fight my brother started.

I used to tease my brother about it too. "I stuck up for you today. Jimmy said you eat shit on white bread,… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Vexing Grammar
I am not sure it is grammar, but it is relative to communication in this modern world in which we live. I HATE when grown men (and women) use emojis instead of words. Grown men should not be using emojis to communicate. At my age, around 60, I cannot even make out what the emoji is conveying.

Interesting (to me at least), NY Yankees manager Aaron Boone has his own grammar annoyance that he went public with the other day. After Garrett Cole pitched 9 innings and… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Fool around and/or find out
It's my birthday. Kinda appropriate I suppose. As a kid, my parents would tell me that the present was too big to wrap and it was in the garage where it belonged. Inevitably, it was something like a matchbox car, not a real one. My brothers would make up crap too about my birthday like, "Actually no one knows your real birthday. April 1st is the day mom and dad found you in a basket outside the firehouse down the street." Sometimes, in school, a friend would announce to the… [more]

Site Update
Do owners have to be paid for their work? My guess is no. If no, then make the SC members some 2nd class Members of the LLC. Each contribute a nominal amount, say $5. Then they donate their time to their business. THen at the end of their term, they resign from the LLC and get their capital ($5) back. I am not a lawyer, but that is one way I would look at what is possible.

Metatalktail Hour: A Dagwood Special
I happen to favor the Hash Tag. A Hash Tag is a Tommy D with hash browns. A Tommy D is a chicken cutlet, bacon, egg and cheese. Can get on a roll or a wedge. But, really, anything from Rocky's specialty menu is killer. Open 24/7/365. Busiest times are the morning rush and midnight to 2am on a weekend. People come from all over Westchester and even Rockland counties. I drive 17 minutes to get there.

187: Man, It's A Hot One
That zip code white paper from 2013 is fascinating. Never knew it could be so. I am one of those nerds who knows his zip+4, but still this is interesting. People do identify with their zip code. I think it is a more precise identifier than the area code. When I lived in another state, my license plate was my original home town's zip code. Only one person ever figured it out. Or at least told me they figured it out.

Anyway, thank you for posting that misc. link.

Good luck. The future of the site rests on your shoulders. No pressure though.

Seriously, congratulations and thank you for volunteering your time. Speaking of volunteering maybe a small stipend a la the BIPOC committee to buy an ice cream or a beer or a root beer float would be a great gesture in appreciation of their willingness to help for free.

Emojis on Metafilter?
I am in the adults don't use emojis to express themselves, they use their words camp.

When I see emojis, I just ignore them. I have no idea what they are supposed to be telling me.

In practice, outside of stunt posts, no-one here is communicating exclusively in emoji.

Maybe we should try a MetaTalk thread that is only emojis, no words. See how many can follow it.

On Cooling Off MetaTalk Threads
I think Meta should be left as is. Mandating the avoidance of conflict or shutting down avenues of discussion that may lead to conflict makes no sense to me. It is the ostrich concept. People disagree. The important thing is that members treat each other with civility and respect while disagreeing.

I am not on reddit and I just now found out there was a subsite or whatever it is called for MetaFilter discussion. I looked at a few threads. Definitely some angry… [more]

On not repurposing abortion rights terminology
I have been reading this thread. I think that it comes down to the simple thought that Lyn Never made a reasonable request in whatever tone you want to ascribe to it, and there is no real good reason not to try to live by it. I ask myself, "Self, is there any need to use the term to describe an aversion to the vaccine or to masking or to anything really?" There answer is, "No, I can say the same thing in a different way" no matter what I think the meaning of the phrase is.… [more]

(b) really bothers me too. I answer a lot of asks. When I ask, it is for me, not for the answerer. When I answer, it is my thoughts. Do with it as you see fit. It is your now. Feel free to ignore, take it as written or modify it. If you don't like not getting closure, don't answer.

I also hesitate to use the Best Answer feature. It is so subjective. I guess if you are asking a factual question, what is 2+2? then the first person to answer 4 could get a Best… [more]
