Movie: Daredevil
The only thing that stuck with me from this movie was the intro music for Fisk, "Lapdance" by N*E*R*D (with a pre-megafame Pharrell Williams)

Movie: The Mummy
Just wanted to drop on and say thanks for this thread, and especially Carillon for pointing out it was in theaters. This is a friend's favorite movie (something like 30 viewings), and she had no idea it was playing. She took her 13 year old, and they had a great time.

Movie: Dune: Part Two
I saw it this weekend, and liked it a great deal. I loved the first three books as well. I don't have much to add to what's been discussed, but the scene at the start of the final battle, with the Sardukar watching the storm approach, and then three worms appear...took my breath away.

Movie: The Andromeda Strain
I love this movie. I liked the book as well. I was a little frustrated with the tense movie ending, because in the book Crichton explicitly gave the character more time to abort the explosion, but of course Hollywood needs it to be more sexy.

I used to repeatedly quote the little security passphrase exchange (Howdy, Howdy Doody) to my friends in high school, much to their chagrin.

And 2nding mediareport, I need to watch this again.

Movie: Polar
I liked this a lot, except for the torture scene near the end, a little much for me. But I loved the whole sniper/cabin scene.

I'll tell you what, though. I'm pretty sure most contestants on Great British Bake Off didn't see this, cuz otherwise they'd have been way more deferential to Matt Lucas.

Movie: Bottoms
Man, that first punch that Ayo Edebiri throws at the first club. I mean, I knew what it was going to be like from the previews, but just a great way to set the tone.

Movie: Godzilla Minus One
I liked this a great deal. The two monster setpieces, chasing the small boat and the attack on Ginza, were legit terrifying. And the scene in Ginza when Godzilla first (well, second) unleashes the heatray was heartstopping. Both for the devastation, and the very clear parallels with a nuclear blast and everything that goes along with that in Japan in 1947.

Some of the drama didn't sit quite right with me, but most of it worked, and went well with the story.… [more]

Movie: Quiz Lady
It's definitely not as over the top as Joy Ride, but it was very funny and very kind, in the final analysis. A lot of the reviews I read were pretty down on Awkwafina, but I thought she was good.

Movie: The Holdovers
It's a great movie, and Dominic Sessa is the standout for me. That it's his first time on film and he holds his own with Giamattti and Randolph is impressive.

Reservation Dogs: Elora's Dad
I think this might be my favorite episode of the series. The two leads are so subtle, and the relationship opens up so slowly and deftly.

Movie: Landscape with Invisible Hand
Asante Blackk was the standout in this for me. It felt similar in some ways to "Sorry to Bother You", with themes about race, class and capitalism. I am also a sucker for aliens that are, well, alien, at least, more than a prosthetic mask, and I thought these were pretty interesting.

Movie: Joy Ride (2023)
Saw this Saturday and really enjoyed it. Very funny, and I liked the sentimental bits. And killer soundtrack.

It's two scenes fairly close together, and it's Audrey throwing up on someone else. They are both short, although after the second time you see the other person getting cleaned off, so you see them covered with goo. Although honestly it doesn't look that bad. If you want to avoid it, both happen in the drinking scene with the client.

Movie: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
How did you approach creating unique themes for each universe?
[They] did a presentation of all the different art-style approaches in the movie, which was phenomenal, talking about all the different techniques, from the sort of Syd Mead-inspired concept design that 2099’s world is very inspired by, to the watercolor drips of Gwen’s world. For me doing the music, I’m also trying to approach each world with a different palette and a different technique and a different approach. In this… [more]

Ted Lasso: So Long, Farewell
"... and Beard’s horrifying thong"

When he jumps up on the counter there's this little 'flesh on marble' squeak, and Rebecca looks extra horrified. Such a subtle add to a very not subtle costume.

"..did anyone get weepy at this ep?" Mrs Gorgik got demonstrably emotional twice. Once when Colin got to kiss his fella at the end of the match, and again when Rebecca helped up the child at the airport and then it turns out it's Dutch guy's progeny.

Ted Lasso: International Break
The least realistic thing to me was the idea that a parent finally apologizing *once* after years of being shitty would have any impact on a child's mood or mental health *whatsoever*.

My opinion isn't based on personal experience or anything.

Movie: Polite Society
We just saw it, so great. At first I thought my favorite part was the "spa women change into henchmen", but in retrospect I really really liked the scene of Ria and Lena dancing while there mother talks about them with the group of women, short as it was.

Movie: Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
Oh man, a friend from high school and I could reliably bring each other to hysterics by shaking our hand and going "sh sh sh sh sh sh sh", evoking this scene. I started laughing while finding the clip for this comment.

Poker Face: The Hook
I really liked that Charlie didn't use her truth-o-meter to solve anything. She figured out Cliff because of randomly coming across the glow in the dark chips. Not because he lied about anything. That was a cool way to subvert expectations.

Poker Face: Escape from Shit Mountain
What I love about the show is that I never feel jerked around by plot twists.

I felt that was about this show until this episode. Like, ok, she's not dead after being hit, that's great. But we see him stick a knife in her chest. Everything else we've seen (and even in other Rian Johnson work) is that you see what you see. There's no explanation for why that knife didn't kill her. Nothing about a necklace, or a flask, or anything. It's filmed… [more]

I loved this movie. I think now, though, the misogyny (at least, I think I remember it being pretty bad) would make it unwatchable for me.

I also hadn't heard about Carruth's abuse.

I really liked this, although confess to not totally getting the thread. Similarly his followup, Upstream Color, which I think wasn't so much a movie as an aesthetic.

Movie: The Matador
Oh man I loved everything about this movie. I loved the acting, I loved the story, I loved (LOVED) the music. I mean, The Cramps?!?! And I still watch the last scene (at the grave) on YouTube every now and then.

I especially liked the subverted expectations about what happens in the hotel room, and the way they used flashbacks to heighten the expectations.

Movie: Star 80
This was the first movie I ever saw Eric Roberts in. Every time I saw him after, I was repelled. I remember a few years later he was in something where he was supposed to be acomic romantic lead, and I kept wanting to yell at the woman "Run! Run away now!"

Movie: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
My favorite thing was
[Click for spoiler]After Duke "threatens" Miles, Miles makes a drink and go over to Duke.
I noticed that he handed Duke the glass, and I thought "Well that's odd". Then everything unfolds, and as Miles retells things, Duke picks the glass up from the table. That "retold" scene is shown twice and I started thinking "Maybe I am remembering it incorrectly". Then of course everything comes out, and we're shown… [more]

Book: Lucifer's Hammer
I loved this book, and others by the pair, when I was younger. I didn't understand all the shittiness at the time, and have no desire to revisit them.

My primary memory of the book, though, is that I started reading it while we were on a family road trip. And my mother started reading it, and then my father, and they couldn't figure out a good way to share the paperback so they TORE IT INTO SEVERAL PIECES so we could each read it at the same time. It was horrifying to… [more]

I was halfway through, then someone else started (can't remember which one). After something...75-100 pages, they tore the book apart so I had my section, they had theirs, and the next person could start theirs.

Movie: Bug
I loved this movie. I remember, after seeing it, thinking "that was nothing like the trailer", and it was so, so much more interesting than the promos made it seem ("First, they send the drones, then they send the Queen"). Like, not science fiction horror, but an intimate look at two people descending into extreme paranoia.

I remember sometime after I saw it, hearing Tracy Letts during an interview say "Yeah, it was probably the most misleading… [more]

The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor
I don't think anyone pointed this out, but I'm pretty sure that when Grogu jumps into Mando's arms during the chase, it's a force-jump, since all he could muster before are tiny little hops.

And we become these human jukeboxes spitting out these anecdotes to dine out on like we're doing right now. Well I will not turn him into an anecdote, it was an experience. At the end, when we see Bronwyn in the gas station, and the two women are saying "I think it's her", etc, etc, one of them says "Stark", and Bronywyn corrects her, "Lark", and then the woman says "no, it's Stark".

That's gotta be the writers riffing on Paltrow being in Iron Man/Avengers, right?

Movie: The Map of Tiny Perfect Things
(Spoilers)This was mostly breezy, with a few twists on the genre that I appreciated, that there wasn't a lot of build up to the trope, neither was there a lot of science talk to try to explain what was going on. I really liked Margaret, and wish we had gotten more of her. My wife and I discussed it after, and I think the choice about focusing on Mark and putting the audience in his shoes was the only real way for the reveal, that the story is really about Margaret, to work.… [more]

Movie: The Rhythm Section
I watched this with no expectations other than a woman-fronted "spy" movie, and while I don't think it was great, I liked Blake Lively and thought she did a good job as a haphazard fish-out-of-water. And thought her transformation in the first third was compelling, if not a little cliched.

There was stuff that was problematic, particularly yet another middle-eastern terrorist. And a mostly dull plot. But the character was interesting, and some of the action… [more]

I loved this movie. It was low stakes but interesting, and I thought the chemistry between the leads was great.

I do have a question, though. Why did Roy and Niles go into the cave after Roy shoots him with arrows that first time (well, first time on screen)? Was it just a convenient way to end the day and start again?

Movie: Furie
I watched this back-to-back this weekend with a bunch of other action movies, notably The Man From Nowhere, which has a similar plot. But I liked this one more, for a bunch of reasons. I thought Ngô Thanh Vân was a better actor, and her character more compelling in motivation. I liked all the establishing scenes, both in the village market and in downtown Saigon, and thought they rooted the movie, and provided a good background for what Hai Phượng was going through during her search.… [more]
