FPP about manipulated Reality TV show
The one I was thinking about was Texas Ranch House. But "There's Something About Miriam" sounds horrible as well.

Thanks both!

Metatalktail Hour: Fool around and/or find out
I've been playing Outer Worlds (first time) and am currently working my way through the expansion "Murder on Eridanos". I'm randomly navigating the hotel basement, and in someone's room I found a note that says (and I am absolutely not making this up):

"I have eaten the purpleberries that were in the refrigerator
and which you were probably saving for breakfast.

They were awful"

Thanks to MetaFilter, I laughed and laughed.

Metatalktail Hour: March Forth! Or not!
I've been dealing with knee problems for the last few weeks, so I haven't run in a while (good luck with motivation, COD!). I haven't gone to a traditional doctor yet, my massage therapist has encouraged me to take it easy/ice it, so I'm trying that first. My hopes and dreams are that this is a blip, I recommit to stretching/supportive exercise, and I can get back to running soonish.

Last weekend I worked (volunteer advocacy) with a young adult who has a court date… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: The cheapest, but the best
Trader Joe's 3/$2 (?) milk or dark chocolate bars, great chocolate, great value.

When I was a young teen, I was super into Led Zeppelin, and some record store had a bootleg concert album (this was like, early 80's). I begged my parents for it, and my mother agreed to the $60 (!) price. I got it home, and it was unlistenable. Terrible sound, couldn't hear the music, awful. If I'd just waited a few years, actual concert recordings came out. I guess that's not… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Unsolicited advice, please
A long time ago, a friend told me to always carry a book of stamps in my wallet. He said "you can't always anticipate when you need them, and when people ask for them, you can help". Sure as shit, every now and then people would ask me if I had a stamp (or say "I have to run to the post office to get a stamp") and I'd produce one. I became known for this at work, and as recently as 2020 before everything changed, someone asked if they could buy a stamp from me.… [more]

I have been cycling through three Spotify playlists the last few weeks. The Regrettes (pop punk rockabilly etc), Meet Me @ The Altar (punk/metal.
Spotify is doing something shitty and adding songs by other bands to this one, even though I made it), Parquet Courts (dunno how to categorize them, indie?).

Thanks for the thread I always find great new to me music from other mefites \m/

What are your today traditions?
For the first part of my career, I was the same as obfuscation, for the same reasons. I'd work so that others on my team could do what they wanted. Now, if my inlaws aren't in town, I volunteer with the domestic violence advocacy program I'm with. I'll be doing outreach later today.

Appreciate your MeFi Holiday Cards here!
I love the card exchange. I got a few last week, including one full of stickers :-D I'm sure there are more now at our PO box but I haven't been there for a week.

I plead with my recipients for forgiveness, though. I realized belatedly that "holiday" in "holiday card swap" was meant to modify the word "card" and not simply the time of year we were exchanging them. So the ones I sent were all themed about where I live.… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: It ain't easy being a Halloweenie
A few years ago I was volunteering on Halloween, which was a Friday or Saturday. My partner and I were driving up Pike street in Seattle, which (where we were) is basically a 10-block hill with mixed-use buildings. Traffic is really heavy, and the significant number of pedestrians are keeping pace with the cars.

Anyway we hear this blood-curdling scream, which kind of activates us, and we start looking around for someone is crisis.

Metatalktail Hour: If I were a carpenter, and you were a lady ...
I don't even know who I am in this life, much less past lives.

In other news, I am on my way to Chicago for work, I think my eighth flight this year (none by choice). In-flight vodka is not a good substitute for gin, but its functional, as opposed to aesthetic, effect, is acceptable.

And my boss just emailed that a report I produced is "perfect", so I'll be riding that high for a few days.

Metatalktail Hour: A Dagwood Special
Similarly I don't eat sandwiches much, certainly not that I make. My current favorite to go buy is the Steak Tartare Club from Mean Sandwich.

Flying back to CA again (7th time this year) to deal with my parents' illness. Not looking forward to the airport, but everything else should be pretty easy.

Figured out how to produce a report at work to allow management to slice and dice diversity data to highlight intersectionality in a way they have… [more]

I finally released the first real "I'm proud of this" dashboard for my new role at work. Now just waiting for feedback/comments/acceptance/praise.

You all have reminded me...in 7th grade I went to a new school, where kids started calling me "Peabody" as in "Peabody and Sherman '. For reasons I never understood apart from kids being kids this turned into "pee in your booty", which lasted until I left the school a year later.

Metatalktail Hour: Life's Unwritten Rules
I'm always fascinated by how we choose where to stand in an elevator.

My second favorite elevator thing is how people rearrange themselves in the car as people get off at different floors, almost unconsciously moving away from each other to maximize the distance between them and others. I work at a law firm, and take great joy at refusing to shuffle myself, and "forcing" senior partners to be the ones to shift their positions (which, over… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Dreaming, perchance?
In the late 90's, some friends and I were engaged in a series of consciousness-hacking experiments (no drugs, things like meditation, breathing exercises, etc). The premise was that we were being controlled by aliens, and we were trying to break free of that control (that was the setup, I don't think we actually believed it). It was pretty intense, and we'd get together and debrief our experiences. About three months in, The Matrix came out. The day after I saw it, I had a dream that… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: The Sweetest Taboo
Probably mostly food things. I eat orange rinds, apple cores, strawberry hulls, sometimes melon rinds, and way, way more of chicken/rib bones (like, after eating the meat off them) than most people. Although that's not really about joy, it's just something I do.

I unreservedly love running. Most people that I have met that run talk about "hating" it, it being unpleasant, even while doing it regularly (and way more than me). But I love everything about it,… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Bringing the Cringing
When people use the diminutive form of my name (think "Gorge"). It's a popular form of the name, just not me. Unless you're my father, in which case it's strangely fine. But most people aren't my father.

In other news, I started a new job, which is pretty much as close to my dream job as possible in corporate America. Data analysis focused on issues of social justice, and in theory I'm really excited. Except that it's been really hard, because my team… [more]

I've created a cottage industry at work teaching others how to use the new-ish dynamic array functions in Excel. I'm making a lot of people very, very excited.

Metatalktails "What would a T-Rex taste like?" edition
I'm not sure if these count as weird, but they are memorable.

1) When I was 16 (let's just agree it was around 35 years ago), I went to Cape Town, South Africa to visit my grandmother. Ahead of the trip, someone at my high school asked, in all seriousness, whether I was going to be staying "...in a mud hut" (or somesuch). I scoffed (internally) and said , "no, Cape Town is a city, roughly 4 or 5 times as large as Tucson" (Arizona, where this… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Pandemic Shopping!
Best: leaning hard into my relationship with a great massage therapist. There aren't many things that make me actually happy, but she's one of them.

Worst: a two-day hospital stay for severe anemia after I fainted a bunch. Super (super) expensive, and got literally no answers or long-term help.

Metatalktail Hour: more like metatakenap
I was rejected from a social service job I applied for (a second time), although the hiring manager said some extremely kind things about me along the way of telling me I didn't get it (which wasn't surprising, since my experience in the area is all volunteer, and I was up against people with professional experience).

My gratitude, though, is that I'm pretty sure I've convinced my day job to donate one of my work days each week to the group I volunteer with. Essentially,… [more]

Metatalktail Hour:
I had a friend who went through nursing school, and for one of her classes they did a one day count of people living in their cars. She asked me to help her, so I did. For four hours we drove through Seattle neighborhoods. She had a two page sheet of all the possible indicators, some obvious, many not. I was flabbergasted. Almost every block or so, there was a vehicle that someone was living in, no matter where we were (mostly on the north end). And this wasn't recently, when the number of… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Favorite Visual Art
I've said this here before, but The Ecstacy of St. Theresa just blows me away every time I see it (well, pictures of it). The subject, the textures, everything.

I spent the morning at a food bank, working beside a high school sophomore who is hands-down one of the hardest working volunteers I've ever spent time with. She's focused, learns quick and has great judgment. I've worked with her a few times before. It always leaves me feeling better about the future,… [more]

MetaTalktail Hour: What is on your walls?
Two skateboards (well, one skateboard and one deck). The skateboard, a Hosoi Hammerhead, belonged to a friend of mine (S) who passed away in 2016. He has it since at least the early 90s, and was part of his identity, as far as I was concerned. I was helping his widow sort through his household of stuff, and she said "Please, take anything that you want". I didn't really want or need anything.
