Movie: 100 Bloody Acres
I watched it, but haven't had time to post about it yet. I do like it, but I can see the criticism that it's not terribly scary.

Hannibal: Savoureux
Yeah, that's it, he's a cunning psychopath. So cunning that he left a bunch of evidence lying around in plain sight.

You know, that IS a pretty good point. How did they square the fact that Will turned himself in and seemed horribly shaken with him supposedly being the copycat killer?

Guess who won AV Club's best show of 2014?

Guess who won Vulture's best show of 2014?

In the comments on the AV Club article, some people are saying that they find the heightened reality to be just silly and unbelievable. Obviously I disagree, but I can see where they're coming from and why that might put a person off this show.

And, of course, zero Golden Globe nominations

It still comes across as sci-fi or fantasy because it's not hiding its unreality the way genre-conventional shows do.

Basically every crime show these days takes place in a science fictional universe with crime-solving technology decades ahead of our time.

This is barely related to Hannibal, but: I'm watching an episode of the X-Files where Mulder has blacked out and woken up covered in blood, and the very first goddamn thing Scully says to him is "you need to go to a hospital, this could be something like early stage encephalitis."

Oh, Scully, where were you when Will needed you?

The X-Files: Sanguinarium
I've been going back through the X-Files, which I watched during the original run at what was probably far too young an age. I was just shy of nine when this one aired... but when I saw the episode description on Netflix, I immediately knew "oh shit, this is the one with the liposuction tube that gradually fills up with blood!" I had forgotten the entire plot, and most of the other gore, but that one image is one of the ones that has really stuck with me and fucked with my head, right… [more]

This is definitely the goriest episode I've seen yet on this rewatch. I was actually pretty shocked that they got this on network TV in, what, 1996?

MotW is fabulous. I can't wait until it starts updating again - the artist just had a baby, so it's on temporary hiatus. (Also, check out the note at the bottom of this one!)

The Simpsons: Simpsorama
The Simpsons is really pulling out all the stops on late-era sitcom express... When will Ozmodiar finally be (re)introduced?

Suppose they actually did this. Like, for an entire season. I'd be on board.

Hannibal: Rôti
Aside from various eyeball-related things, Chilton's vivisection has been the most disturbing thing on the show so far to me. Just, ughh

Hannibal: Buffet Froid
Why did Georgia have two bizarrely unrelated illnesses at the same time? It just seems like a weird choice for the writers to have made.

God damn, are there a lot of unethical medical professionals in Baltimore.

So when Sutcliff made those concerns known it signaled to Hannibal that he was ripe to die.

When I watched this last night, I actually thought Hannibal might have decided to kill him when he referred to Will as a pig (during their dinner conversation). You see Hannibal shoot him this glare.

I'm just thinking back to when I watched the first season after seeing all the Tumblr memes, and being very very surprised that "Hannibal wants to be Will's bestest murder friend" was not just ridiculous made-up fanon.

And then season 2 happened...

No, I know - but there almost seemed to be some implication that the character's mental illness and physical illness were the same thing, or caused by the same thing, when in fact they're unrelated and both super rare.

Wait now I want a fanfic where Lecter and Sutclifee did scary things as interns ...not exactly MURDER but not ethical.

Hannibal Lecter: Reanimator

He said "calling out a nurse's perfume," like, telling a nurse what perfume she's wearing. I assume this was a standard pickup line Hannibal used when they were both in med school. Nothing to do with Sutcliffe per se.

Hannibal: Tome-wan
Upon rewatching the second season, I really do think the Vergers felt sort of shoehorned into the plot. Not that both actors weren't great, and not that they didn't wind up fitting into the events of the story, but I think you can really sort of tell that they were in the second season just because they had to be, because future events require it. They kinda came out of nowhere.

Face eating was still amazing though

Hannibal: Sorbet
When Hannibal opens the door to his office expecting Will, he does the teensiest little hop of excitement. Seriously, go back and look for this, it's fucking hilarious.

How did I not realize the hilarious Matrix reference when they do a closeup zoom to Jack's face while he says "I know when I'm awake."

Oh lord, just realized that Lector only cut off Miriam's arm because Jack ran that story provoking him :(

Hannibal: Coquilles
You know, am I alone in thinking Hannibal puts too many non-food items into his plating? I don't want to be constantly eating around feathers and skulls!

Re: Angel dude- "It wasn't god, it wasn't man, it was his choice to die"... said to Jack, in the episode where we find out Bella has cancer. Is this deliberate foreshadowing of where Bella goes in Season 2?

Hannibal: Oeuf
Previously I'd only seen the edited webisode version, so half of this is new for me.

Man, Will at the dinner table is CREEPY.

"You bond with your captors, you survive. You don't, you're breakfast." Aaaaand immediate cut to Abigail and Hannibal. Cheeky, show.

Wow, the "I see family" line from Tripping Abigail is so so much creepier in the context of the entire episode.

Also, uncomfortably hilarious that the events of this episode made Jack want kids.

Hannibal: Amuse-Bouche
"The mirrors in your mind can reflect the best of yourself, not the worst of someone else" - another line that is so much more ominous in retrospect, since now we know that when Hannibal said "the best of yourself" he meant "the murdery-est part of yourself."

Hannibal: Apéritif
Rewatching this now, and I had forgotten what a HUGE weirdo Will is at the beginning of the show. In some ways he almost seems more well-adjusted now that he's been Hannibalized.
posted to FanFare by showbiz_liz at 4:55 PM on October 26, 2014
Wow, knowing what we know now, clearly Hannibal set out a drawing of the Wound Man as a test for Jack. Which Jack failed.

He calls Will a fragile little teacup oh my GOD

I also forgot about that cut right from the "they know" scene to Will covered in blood, which then vanishes before the scene at the Hobbes' place. That was cool.

Movie: Foodfight!
I finally saw this last night, and well, it's delightfully terrible. All of the things I knew about it going in still didn't prepare me for the full impact of the movie's most egregious sins, like the catgirl upskirts, shiny penisweasel, and that ungodly jittering Brand X rep. Five stars. Truly a must-see.

My pick for 'best performance' was definitely the green Nazi. He really had charisma.

A chart of the chapters covered so far:

I was just thinking last night that I should do this. How did I ever think it wouldn't already exist?
posted to FanFare by showbiz_liz at 9:25 AM on June 16, 2014
Wait, why do they think that bits from the Mercy chapter from AWOW was covered in Season 4, ep 1?

I just looked into this- it's because she kills a dude in that chapter who she killed in the inn on the show. I'd say that barely counts.

Also, that chart's missing Bran's Dance chapters, isn't it?

FiveThirtyEight has turned its statistical mojo toward predicting when the next book will come out. tl:dr: When will George R. R. Martin come out with the next book? I have no idea. The stats tell us essentially nothing. The good news for fans is that he’s in Santa Fe with a pretty clear schedule. The worst news is that my most promising finding is that he’s excited. As always, when will George R.R. Martin release “The Winds of Winter”? Whenever he damn well pleases.

I'm gonna try to find a copy of the edited-together 4 and 5 online, and start my re-read there. I'll probably revisit the first three at some later date...

(Yes, yes, piracy- but I'd buy the merged version if that were possible, and as it is, I'm damn sure not gonna haul the paid-for copies of both books to and fro on the subway every day...)

The ball of beasts site asks you to verify that you own the books by typing in a certain word from the 5th book, so it's slightly less illegal(?)

All of the links are broken, at least for me.

Speaking of: since it turned out Tysha was not a whore, why does Tyrion keep repeating that when he knows the truth?

Because his dad said Tysha went "wherever whores go" right before Tyrion shot him.

Since this is the Books Included thread I'll just post here:

We actually don't know. At the end of the third book (from the books wiki) "Arya refused to grant him the mercy of a quick death. She abandoned Sandor to die under a tree by the Trident, and his fate becomes uncertain after this point."

There is a theory about how he might have survived, which is supported by some stuff in the later books and which I personally find fairly… [more]

Orange Is the New Black: We Have Manners. We're Polite.
I don't think she was charged with perjury, actually. Nothing Alex said would necessarily have contradicted what Piper said- that she didn't remember because she didn't care/wasn't paying attention.

Orange Is the New Black: It Was the Change
Uh, why, because a thin woman who eats a bunch of candy must be upchucking it?

Because she was hiding the evidence in a drawer rather than throwing them away. The rest of her office was pristine- why the single drawer of gross wrappers?
