The Other Person is You
There is a lot about Kundalini Yoga and White Tantric and Solstice that is very unbelievable. Does a turban really hold your brain together? Does one day of White Tantric Yoga really equal years worth of meditation? If you revolve your life around Solstice, as Yogi Bhajan says, will everything really be taken care of? I laugh at all of it, but I keep coming back, so I either believe it, or I want to...
I want to collect all of these!
Is there anything you wish you had known when you were 18?
What did you wish you knew when you were 20?

What advice would you give your 25-year-old self?

Official NYC Friendz R Hard Meetup
Some of the people have sort of spoken. We will be beating back the crushing fog of loneliness next Wednesday at Lillie's. Bring your desperate need to connect to someone, anyone, in this vast sea of humanity
new to New York City and friendless
Until this point, your friendships happened through a vague combination of forced institutional socializing, classes, sports and booze. None of your friends can remember exactly how they became friends with each other. But now you are an adult, and now that friend-making is a conscious act, you realize you don’t know how to do it.
A Little Chemical Education
An article entitled '8 Foods We Eat In The U.S. That Are Banned In Other Countries,' purporting to expose the rampant toxicity of American processed foods, was posted on Buzzfeed. Here's a response from research chemist Derek Lowe (of Things I Won't Work With fame, previously).
Ow. Ow. Ow.
I'm afraid of my roommate's cat. It doesn't "play" so much as "viciously attack," and I have a body full of puncture wounds to prove it. Is there anything that can be done about this?
Anecdotally... yup
I miss kids
How can I spend more time around children? I basically have zero interaction with any children, ever, and it's sort of getting me down.
Six foot eight inches of badassery
Before Jason Collins, there was her. "Owning The Middle: Brittney Griner wears bow ties, dates women and dunks with abandon. Call her names if you like -- she is done hiding from haters."
Trading a desktop for a laptop
About a year ago I bought a refurbished iMac. I now totally regret buying a desktop computer and really wish I had a laptop instead. Is there any way for me to trade in my still perfectly-functional iMac for a Mac laptop? (In NYC if it matters)
I'm moving to Crown Heights! Tell me thing about it!
Brooklyn Questions. Late this month, I'm moving into a place at St. John's Place and Bedford Avenue in Crown Heights. I like what I've seen of the neighborhood, but tell me more about it!
Eighty-eight below
"This is video of an aurora australis taken at the geographic south pole! I'm not absolutely sure, but it might actually be the first true video of an aurora australis here, as opposed to a timelapse of longer exposures. Sorry about the swearing - if you were there seeing it you'd probably swear too."
New job prob
I just took a new job, which starts in two weeks. Upon accepting the job, I asked for a day off on June 7th, which is the day before my friend's wedding (in which I'm sort of a bridesmaid). I'd already gotten that day off with my current employer. This was fine with the new job. Now, I've realized that to make it to the bachelorette party, I will have to leave early on May 17th too... on my third day of work. How and when do I bring this up? Can I, even?
I call BS (but I could be wrong)
Is there any biological evidence for the assertion that female sexuality is more fluid than male sexuality? Or is this imbalance more likely due to cultural factors?
We Found Hope in a Mega Millions Ticket
“This restaurant lifestyle is killing us,” Mandy said one night as we took a break from our creative endeavors to eat Walgreen’s off-brand ice cream sandwiches on our front stoop in the cool, salty night air. “Look at us. It’s two o’clock in the morning and we’re still awake. Working. Eating. Drinking shitty wine. Every night. It’s unhealthy! How can I work well if I don’t live well?”
“Yeah, it’s the pits. But what can we do?” I ate my ice cream sandwich slowly, nibbling around the edges.
Mandy finished her sandwich in two bites and crumpled the paper wrapper into a ball. “I’ll figure out something...”
Wednesday meetup at Zombie Hut
Nobody likes 61 Local! Let's go somewhere else! Like Zombie Hut!
Am I seeing double?
This is not exactly a callout, in that I don't have any problem with the advice per se, but... I noticed a recent answer to a job-related question which seemed to be basically the same as an answer I had gotten a couple years ago...
On Romance and Psychosomatic Sneezing
Democrats and Republicans can't even agree about food
Public Policy Polling (previously) dares to address the issues tearing this country apart- such as whether Olive Garden constitutes 'a quality source of authentic ethnic food'. What are the food issues polarizing America?
Pipe dreamin'
A studio or one-bedroom in a desirable* part of Brooklyn for less than $1200/month. Is this even slightly possible anymore?
Butch Heroes
"In this series of portraits I am using the format of traditional Catholic holy cards to represent butch, queer women and queer female-to-male transgendered individuals from history." Via Autostraddle.
I wanted to be a real person to my parents again
Influential- though vile and ponderous
Happy Valentine's Schadenfreude
Is there any hope for me?
I thought Outlander and Kushiel's Dart were stupid. Is there any romance novel I might enjoy?
Delicatessen with Love
The most fabulous albums
As a mini-resolution, I am going to take a month and listen to one new-to-me album every day. The genre is totally unimportant- I just want them to be good!
Have you guys had enough 'what to do in NYC' questions?
My whole family is (finally) comine to visit me in NYC in late March. Help me think of things that will amuse my parents and my 20-year-old sister. PS: We are all giant nerds.
Teachers boycott standardized testing
How to hire a stripper?
I am helping plan a bachelorette party and have some questions about the hiring of strippers. Specifically, one male and one female stripper. More specifically, in Richmond VA.
Well, I've made it HERE, so...
Given this list of things I do and don't like about living in NYC, where might I want to consider moving?
I mean, what could be more delightful?
Stupid question: where can I buy bathtub crayons, in person, in NYC, before Saturday?
When I find this shirt, some company is gonna be VERY happy
Help me find women's fitted boat-necked cap-sleeved or 3/4 length-sleeved shirts in a variety of solid colors!
(What, me picky?)
The Sessions
The Sessions, which opens nationally on October 26th, is a film depicting the true story of the therapeutic relationship between the disabled poet Mark O'Brien and the professional sexual surrogate Cheryl Cohen Greene, to whom O'Brien lost his virginity at the age of 36. The film, adapted from O'Brien's moving essay "On Seeing a Sex Surrogate," was written and directed by Ben Lewin, who, like O'Brien, contracted polio at the age of six.
Thanksgiving II: The Recluckening
I need to make the best turkey you've ever tasted this Thanksgiving. My pride is at stake here, people. Help me!
I laughed, I cried, etc
Storytelling as an art form/performance- I can't get enough! Point me towards podcasts, events in NYC, etc.
Pure black and white sex
Scandals of Classic Hollywood* is a fantastic series of articles exploring the careers and private lives of old Hollywood's most legendary performers, written by self-styled "doctor of celebrity gossip" Anne Helen Petersen.
THE resource on the net for the history of GLBT music
Queer Music Heritage is a sprawling website about the history of queer music. You can listen to twelve years' worth of monthly radio shows (link goes to the first year, 2000); take a look at the Queer Music History 101 overview; check out the extensive photo galleries in the female impersonators section; or read through the blog, which features interesting tidbits from gay musical history, like this overview of the Sissy Man Blues.
I have insurance goddamn it!
My doctor's office billed me up front for an IUD and told me I would be reimbursed. Today, after calling them repeatedly, I found out that they have not filed a claim for the device, and they couldn't give me a satisfactory explanation as to why. I have no idea what to do now.
NYC Honey Festival!
I will be working at the NYC Honey Festival at the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk this Saturday. It just occurred to me to post it here. Come take advantage of one of the few remaining nice Saturdays of 2012! And get free samples of local honey, and drink locally-brewed beer with honey in it, and check out a honey extraction and glassed-in observation hive! And probably listen to me geek out about varroa mite mitigation techniques!
Thoughts about women and homemaking in the 21st century
"This blog is a look at the social movement I call ‘New Domesticity’ – the fascination with reviving “lost” domestic arts like canning, bread-baking, knitting, chicken-raising, etc. Why are women of my generation, the daughters of post-Betty Friedan feminists, embracing the domestic tasks that our mothers and grandmothers so eagerly shrugged off? Why has the image of the blissfully domestic supermom overtaken the Sex and the City-style single urban careerist as the media’s feminine ideal? Where does this movement come from? What does it mean for women? For families? For society?"
Girl, you're a woman ALREADY so stop lazing around!
Help me be a grown-up. I am turning 25 soon, and I'm beginning to realize that I don't really enjoy living like an irresponsible kid anymore!
I may be the most computer savvy person here... that does not mean I know anything
I need to send a merged email from a Gmail address. Problems have ensued.
Once there was a lady who lived in... um... Westeros?
I want to read about daily life in the Middle Ages. Particularly daily life in monasteries, but in other places too.
Virtual Travel
Nice work, if you can get it
Want to be a New York City tour guide? You can't just jump right in and start doing it. First, you'll need to pass the Sightseeing Guide license test, a surprisingly difficult exam meant to ensure that only the best and brightest NYC history nerds can conduct tours.
Razzle Dazzle Berry Pie
There's only 3 types of people in the world. There's Gumbel, there's friends of Gumbel, and there's Tight Dave.
I know this all sounds rather vague
I want to find more freelance writing jobs, but I have no idea where to begin.
Make me more comfortable with biking
You started biking later in life, and you did it in a big city. How did you become comfortable biking on roads with cars? I'm kind of freaked out by this.
56 and counting
The Up Series [previously] continues. This documentary series, begun in 1964, has revisited the lives of a select group of British citizens once every seven years of their life. 56 Up, which shows the group at age 56, will air sometime in mid-May on the BBC, but until then, have this great Guardian article about the impact of the films on the lives of the people featured in them.
Yes, I know this doesn't make me special
If you reach your mid-20s with no career direction, what do you do? How do you fix it?
