Kraken Whispers - an interactive text adventure
I want to like this but also keep running into dead ends at certain points (not game over, just an absence of text prompts to keep going).

Penga, a penguin physics game
I thought I done hacked it, but unfortunately it doesn't count penguins you bump into the water using other penguins. 😞

INSIDE: The Photobook
Update: Found a better online host for the PDF that actually gets the spreads right -- and even has page turn animations! Enjoy.

Thanks!

There's some boilerplate at the end, but tl;dr it's both a non-commercial work and extremely transformative (reworked text, heavily edited images, significant creative re-interpretation, completely different medium, etc.), so I do believe it's fair use in this case.

HT-Quote
Neat! Though I wish Apple wouldn't limit functionality like this to Safari.

Guess the AI Jukebox artist
As promised: AI Jukebox music quiz #2! Or you can just watch the YouTube video if you don't want to bother with the Sporcle part (AI image clues start at 10:00, answers at 20:00).

This is so my shit.

Is there any more in the pipeline? If you're planning on doing an Active Worlds episode, MeMail me and I can forward you some intriguing threads.

Do Subservient Chicken next!

(Also, if you haven't looked into it already, the Flashpoint project would be another great place to archive the original files.)

Space Exploration: Serpens Sectory (Prototype 1)
Very neat! I think I actually got more fun out of just one session than from Spore's entire space stage.

Just two suggestions if there's ever a future version:

- I loved the crew selection mechanic, but it was a little hard keeping track of the various classes and experience levels in that long list. Maybe include some kind of "crew matrix" listing the various job slots and showing how well-staffed they are as you go?… [more]

10000 YEARS
This post about the infamous WIPP design document was one of the first really fascinating articles that drew me into reading MeFi on the regular, and this is a brilliant and haunting interpretation of that grim thought experiment. Excellent work!

(One tiny nitpick: the "type IRL to advance text on the screen" mechanic is a fun 30-second gimmick, but not as the only way to progress through a game. Maybe tweak it so that holding down a key does the same thing?)

You mean relaunch? I could have sworn I'd seen it before, and there are links to it here as far back as May.

Close Guantanamo Bay
A critique: As mentioned in that thread, I think this would be more effective if addressed to Congress. Obama clearly wants to close the base, having campaigned on it and signed an executive order to that effect on his first day in office. But it's the House and Senate (both parties!) that have voted overwhelmingly to block these efforts, by denying funding for transfer of detainees to the US and prohibiting deportation to their home countries.

I'd follow the model of… [more]

Sea Level Rise Maps now up to +60m
I had no idea this was a Mefi's Ownâ„¢ project! Neat.

For an illustrated guide to all of the major changes such a rise would wreak and what it might mean culturally, check out "the world of Dubia."

(Also, a couple of bugs: The flood overlay stops loading north of a horizontal line running through St. Petersburg, Russia and the southern coast of mainland Alaska. And this might be a Google Chrome issue, but the map tiles along the bottom of… [more]

Real-Time Etsy Map
You might want to add a way to pause the auto-refresh. I can imagine someone visiting, seeing a lot of wares that catch their eye, and then having the map reload before they get a chance to check out everything they wanted to.

National High Five Day 2010!
Congrats, JoeGoblin, on getting this holiest of days front-paged on Wonkette, which is now encouraging DC locals to overwhelm the Tax Day Teabaggers swarming their city with totally sweet high fives.

Humans Hanging Out
I like the quirky style, but the gameplay is exasperating. The first two "challenges" are usually straightforward, but after that it seems like what you say has no bearing on the reaction. For example, I told a "mezzo-soprano" that I adored singing, and she was skeptical. What?

And often you'll get combinations of responses that will either piss the character off, or really piss them off. Like, the subjects will be things they… [more]

Thanks for the extra info, Rob. I did get over the "hump" after a few more games, and actually won after about the 20th go with a few lucky combinations to help. Love the dialogue!

Battle for Terra
When I first starting reading this, it seemed like it was just some indie short film. It took me more than a moment to realize that this was the same major motion picture I'd just seen the trailer for a few days ago. Who knew that Mefi had Hollywood glitz in its roster? :P

Congrats on the film, kcalder, it looks great.
