Keep aging 4Runner or replace with low-mileage (but theft-prone) Soul?

I've held on to a reliable older 4Runner for quite awhile because I dread the headache of having to replace it in the current market. I now have a chance to replace it with a newer, low-mileage model with minimal fuss. Only problem: it's a Kia Soul.

[RSS PSA] Questions you may have missed...

PSA: Like a lot of MeFites, I keep up with the site via RSS -- specifically Feedly. In fact, their stats show there are nearly 2,000 subscribers to the same Ask MetaFilter feed I use on Feedly alone. Unfortunately, this feed is hosted on Google's aging Feedburner platform, which is increasingly unreliable as a service. This manifested last month when Feedly was unable to update the AskMe feed for over a week. If Google eventually shuts down the service, then anyone depending on that feed to stay engaged with MeFi may lose contact with the site without even realizing it. The good news is that the site has a new set of self-hosted feeds that should remain active no matter what Google does. So, if you read the site using an RSS reader, please take a moment to update your reader to the new feeds -- and check inside for a list of questions you might have missed during the outage.

Grand gift ideas for a Grand Tour

A U.S. family member is taking a trip to Europe next year (France and Italy, ending in a cruise). What are some good birthday gift ideas to help prepare?

[META] Last call for Steering Committee nominations

PSA: This week is the last call for user nominations to the second Steering Committee to help set policy and oversee the site budget for the year ahead. Do you want to help chart a course for this community (or know someone who would make a great pick)? Send in your nominations today! More details from the full MetaTalk post inside.

Are these tickets worth contesting? (And if so, how?)

After serving two weeks on a grand jury, I ended up with not one but two parking tickets that would claw back more than half of what meager pay I got. Normally I'd just pony up the dough, but in this case they feel pretty unfair and I'm just wondering if there's any point in contesting them. Is it worth a shot, given the circumstances?

Adding bleed and gutters to a self-published photobook

I'm in the process of making an 8.5'' x 8.5'' photobook as a birthday gift for my brother, but realized some fifty pages in that I hadn't accounted for bleed. Is expanding the page (and photos) a quarter inch going to be enough? And what about gutters? ❄️ details inside.

Software or websites based on "pairwise comparison" ranking?

I love using Flickchart to keep track of the films I've seen, but tired of waiting for them to expand the site to other areas. Are there any other good websites or programs where you can build a ranked database of media using repeated 1-on-1 comparisons?

Insurance not covering an annual check-up

I had my first primary care doctor visit in awhile last April, a routine new patient wellness visit, which is supposed to be 100% covered under my ACA plan. After a bizarre issue with the initial billing in December, I've now received a partially-uncovered $500 bill for the visit despite everything being in-network. Is this at all normal, and if so what's the best strategy for getting this number way the heck down?

Got jumper cables backward. Sparked and sizzled. Should I try again?

Trying to jumpstart my dead car. Thanks to a mislabeled battery on the donor car, I hooked up the jumper cables backwards at first -- a couple of brief contacts (sparks), then one for ~30 seconds, stopping when I noticed a low sizzling sound. The donor car was not cranked, and starts up fine after everything was disconnected (and the mistake discovered). Is it safe to try again, or have I done (or will I do) dangerous damage to either car?

Amazon page said new, it's refurbished. Is my laptop still a good deal?

I found a deceptively great deal on a new Lenovo laptop on Amazon, but the seller messaged me that the listing was in error and the product is actually "certified refurbished" with a 90-day warranty. Should I keep it or cancel it (or something else)?

Can anyone identify the DC-area Hilton in this video?

Some Reddit edgelord filmed himself cutting the tape that some school chaperones had placed on the hotel room doors of their students. Assuming he's too cowardly to own up himself, they need somebody to tip off the adults and clear their name. Can anyone identify the DC-area Hilton in this video and help save a bunch of kids from being unjustly punished?

I AM LIKE UNTO A GOD (of teevee)

I just got a one-week Nielsen TV diary in the mail for November 5-12 -- including a crisp $1 bill to help grease the wheels. Yay! Unfortunately most of the shows I watch regularly, like Silicon Valley, Louie, Key & Peele, and Rick and Morty are on hiatus (or over) right now. I'm already planning to catch Last Week Tonight and Colbert's Late Show, but what other worthy television (that doesn't require a lot of prior familiarity) should I give my coveted (if minuscule) 18-34 ratings boost to?

The Game of Life

Trying to identify this elaborate custom-tailored performance art/ARG project I read about, possibly on MetaFilter, circa 2007-2010. Basically: you apply for the chance to have this group go to your hometown and stage an elaborate theatrical experience personalized to you, starring all your friends and family, for the purposes of creating a powerful emotional experience.

Great works of the Web-ern Canon

A lot of ink has been spilled on the subject of whether video games are art, but rorgy's recent megapost on Homestuck reminded me that comparatively little has been written on the idea of Internet Art. Such works that leverage the internet as a unique creative medium fascinate me, and I'd love to find more. What are some other works that qualify?

Optimal OGG to MP3 encoding for quality vs. file size?

I'm preparing to revamp my digital music library, including re-encoding a lot of high-bitrate OGG tracks as MP3 to increase portability and cut down on file size. What are the best LAME encoder settings to maximize appreciable quality for the future without taking up too much space?

In search of a lasting wireless network solution

After wasting two different off-days trying to get my damnable modem+router working, I want to return them both and get something entirely new. Any good recommendations for a solid, reliable DSL modem and wireless router set-up with decent NAS support?

Where did the "America is a republic, not a democracy" argument come from, and how much truth is there to it?

Why am I being prompted to install Windows XP SP3 when I already have it?

I just got a notification on my Windows XP laptop to install Service Pack 3. Thing is, I already have SP3 installed. Is this a necessary update? A redundant Microsoft goof? Or something more sinister?
