"...we're correcting you. XOXO Science."
Hey! Dr. Gunter is now taking on the frankly nightmarish-sounding JIFTIP, with predictable results. As always, don't read the comments!

Strange Fruit
I like it! Nothing beats the original, but that's to be expected; it's a good take and I like the grit of the production. I'm not familiar with Bad Rabbits, but will have to chase them down now...

Comedy Bang Bang 500
This post has inspired me to seek out the first CBB episode I ever listened to, which turns out to be #104, Shut Up Dracula! I was probably tipped to it by online fuss about the name change.

And, not knowing nothin' about nothin', I legitimately did think Owen Wilson had dropped by the podcast, because, well, this was apparently a comedy podcast and Owen Wilson does comedies.

So chalk me up as one of the dummies that could get easily confused by impressions.

Not your usual Getting Things Done.
I'm currently in a "figure out productivity" phase in my ongoing sobriety/exercise/diet thing, so this is a well-timed thread for me, and I'm really into the Top Ten Aggravations List above. I actually was halfway through the below when I took a break and found this thread...

At work, I use Sublime Text and a package called PlainTasks to create todo lists. There’s a bunch of things I like about this combination of… [more]

That is all. Just an interesting fact about me. Americans frequently think I was born in a Wawa, which leads to a very different conversation.

The following is an actual legal dispute. Like, for real.
Or it's all part of some long game viral ad campaign for Coke and we'll hate ourselves for falling for it.

I don't know any of the players involved personally, but B. Rich is a bit of a musical institution in Kingston, and it seems vanishingly unlikely that he's in the pocket of Big Cola. The lawyer in the video is also actually a practicing trademark lawyer, so double unlikely that he'd put his name out there as part of this if it's a marketing stunt.

In this vein, I've been having a ton of fun with Gigantic, which is free in open beta on Win10/Xbox, has a good roster of heroes, and is quite forgiving for crap gamers like me. Not a huge player base -- nobody on MeFightClub (yet...?) but I don't seem to have much trouble finding games.

Augustus, dahling, save some room for later!
Do people really prefer sour candy over delicious, time-honored chocolate?

Lumping all these things into the same category because they have a lot of sugar in them has always struck me as weird. It's like asking "Do people really prefer pizza over hearty lasagna?" because they both usually have tomato sauce.

They're totally different things. My Nerds (I love Nerds) craving is completely different from my Mars Bar craving.

The "Progressive Liberal" is maybe the perfect wrestling heel
Clicked for the Progressive Liberal, stayed for the intro production values that belied my expectations from "Appalachian Mountain Wrestling," carried on with curiosity to see what "Stan Lee" meant in the video description, was not surprised but nevertheless a touch disappointed at who Stan Lee turned out to be, and then noped out.

Interviewed on the CBC here in Canadiania tonight.

- Claims to be a genuine left-winger, who plays it up for laughs/wrestling fun but genuinely wants to get some of these points into the audience's head (if not winning them over right away)
- Has had guns pointed at him by audience members
- Seemed like a genuinely nice fella with a solid sense of humour

Press the Button
My wife and I have done this at airports -- Toronto's international terminal has a large bar/lounge area with embedded tablets where you can browse and order and somebody brings your food over to you. It didn't seem too Jetsons this is the FUTURE or particularly sterile and inhuman at the time; I kind of appreciated the ability to just sit down, decompress, and not feel like we had to make immediate drink/food choices because somebody kept coming over to ask if we were ready… [more]

Vigilante Justice
It surprises me to see it suggested here that analyzing and retelling the Batman myth is a waste of time, when it's one of the most enduring popular fantasies of wealth and revenge in the last half-century.

As the Batman story is cyclical, so is this particular critique of that story -- it's not that this was not well-done, but there's going to be a natural gap between people who have seen a dozen Batman "reboots"* throughout their lives,… [more]

Jimmy The Cat Refinds His Home
About a decade ago, Cannelle vanished. She was gone for two weeks, and I'd called her original owner to relay the sad news that Cannelle had probably passed away. Then, one day I'm getting ready for work, I go out onto my concrete-slab "front porch" and Cannelle drags herself out of a groundhog hole that went under the slab. I don't know if she'd been away, came back and ducked inside for shelter the night before, had gotten stuck in there and for some reason had… [more]

Musta Got Lost, Somewhere Down the Line...
It's worth mentioning that J. Geils and the J. Geils Band also form an interesting footnote in the history of intellectual property and trademark conflicts, as the J. Geils Band continued to tour and record as the J. Geils Band after J. Geils quit the band (mentioned briefly in the last link), with J. Geils legally unable to record as "J. Geils". I wish I had more familiarity with the details.

There's a new Spookey Ruben album? How did I not -- LAST OCTOBER? Gaaah!

Cloudflare not happy times
Cloudflare posted an incident report with full technical details this morning.

It turned out that the underlying bug that caused the memory leak had been present in our Ragel-based parser for many years but no memory was leaked because of the way the internal NGINX buffers were used. Introducing cf-html subtly changed the buffering which enabled the leakage even though there were no problems in cf-html itself.

The Last Supper
I continue to be irked by the irresponsible drinking and unprofessionalism of the crew in these films. Call me old fashioned, but is it too much to expect the crew of a multi-billion quatloo starship to fly sober?

I will immodestly refer you to my "B-Ark" theory of Prometheus, with the now-prescient identification of Donald Trump as one of the people that richly deserves to be hurled at a distant and lethal planet.

Dr. Death did not win
It's funny how "entrepreneur" has slowly become a warning word for me; a self-identifier that, like "fiscal conservative" or "free thinker," has transformed from a pretty neutral term to a cue to begin to backing away at great rates of speed.

And the Arthur Award goes to...
I had a nodding acquaintance with him when I was the editor of Ryerson's independent newspaper, The Eyeopener, and he was kind enough to stop me in the hall once and tell me he thought I was wrong in an editorial I wrote. But he was a journalism prof and I was Radio and Television Arts, so our paths never crossed substantially. Taking the atomic elixir
I just started listening to HH, based on the recommendation of a colleague; I'm slogging my way through an episode a bit at a time.

About 1.5 hours in, this thought popped unbidden into my head:

"If Curtis Armstrong were auditioning to replace Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman, it would sound just like this."

Now I can't shake it.

It's not ruining the podcast, but I am engaging with it quite a bit differently now.
