Cap's definitely got superhuman strength, and had it at that time.

Nerd hat on: Captain America's whole deal is that the Super-Soldier Serum elevated his physique to the peak of human potential: he's as strong as the strongest non-super person, as fast as the fastest non-super person, as agile as the agile-est non-super person, etc. So he's canonically not supposed to have superhuman strength, just, like, as much strength as you can have before you cross that line.

The VHS fever dream of early 2000s David Lee Roth [SLYT]
The YouTube description:

For the first time the complete version performed in tact from beginning to end.

I'd like to believe that there are no typos in this sentence and Diamond Dave is receiving transmissions from a higher plane where 'tact' is defined... differently.

what rough beast, its hour come round at last
I sometimes wonder what weird genetic lottery toss left me feeling that Mac & Cheeze in almost all shapes, styles and flavors is not just unpalatable but downright repellent.

Clearly, somebody in your family tree, at some point in the past, did something to deeply offend a wizard.

These stolen avocados can carry risks
Meanwhile, across the pond, we're experiencing a household avocado drought because we're refusing to buy Mexican avocados for drug-cartel-related reasons. Every once in a while a store will get Chilean avocados and we just go crazy.

We have portkeys! Boom! Middle of the ocean!
"With only one sniper we'd have a better rendement."

I love it when Francophone creators let French in, especially in contexts where (a) it's super clear what the intent of the word is; and (b) when the French word is not quite translatable into an English word that captures the full meaning of the French. "Rendement" is result, but it also pulls in a kind of efficiency concept, so "result as compared to effort expended"… [more]

Quitting Your Job to Pursue Your Passion is Bulls***
Side Hustler!

Kitteh and I went to TCAF a few weeks ago, and as somebody who used to be really into making comics -- and walked away after serial disappointments, largely due to co-creators not fulfilling their end of things -- I suffered a full-blown anxiety attack after we left, having spent four hours looking at people who were literally my peers a decade ago, and who have all gone on to fulfilling full-time creative careers while I work a desk… [more]

Have we hit peak mattress?
We went from a super firm mattress -- it still shocks me for a few seconds when I lie down on it in the guest room -- to a Casper. My wife definitely prefers the Casper, I'm meh on it -- if we ever have substantial money to burn I think a split mattress, or having two singles smushed together in a custom frame, would really be best for us.

Casper:
- Is soft. Not gooshy crazy soft, but if you like a firm mattress, this ain't it.… [more]

Moon Knights and Demon Bears
Stray Toasters was the first comic I ever truly loved.

My gateway to Stray Toasters was the Helfer/Sienkiewicz run on the DC Mature Readers Shadow back in the late '80s, which I honestly think is his best work. I mean, come on. (hat tip to an excellent Mindless Ones article on the series). And he was followed by Kyle Baker! Doing the some of the best work of his career! God damn, I love… [more]

BABYMETAL Makes Their U.S. Television Debut
I saw BabyMetal at HEAVY MTL a few years ago, and when they hit the stage -- following something like, I don't remember, but fairly "metal metal", there was an awesome wash of confusion through the thousands of people in the crowd, then a small outflux of some metalheads who clearly realized that this was not for them, and then a MASSIVE surge of energy as all the remaining metalheads thought "fuck it" and started to rock the fuck out to BabyMetal.… [more]

The doughnut recipe at the end has become my new culinary challenge.
My husband's great garlic disaster was the time he juiced some garlic for shits'n'giggles and was left with only shits (and massive oh-god-am-i-dying heartburn).

Okay, so what happened was we had a whole massive skein of garlic -- like, twelve heads of garlic, woven -- and one of them had was growing shoots and somebody thought that meant we had to throw the whole thing out.

So I thought maybe we could… [more]

Rob Ford Dead at 46
I'm stunned that he was only 46. I'd always assumed 50s, possibly due to the hard living. This means Ford was younger than I am right now when he took office.

I don't think I'm nearly half wise enough, thoughtful enough, or knowledgeable enough to be the mayor of my mid-sized city, let alone Toronto.

I literally can't imagine what that would be like.

Maybe this speaks more to Ford's failings and hubris than anything,… [more]

Aw, thanks, everybody!

Yes, it's padlocked -- mainly because people are entrusting me with their work, and my chance of collaboration is higher if the artists involved don't feel like their work might get picked up in a few seconds. Face front, true believers!
It's inarguable that Kirby never needed Lee creatively as he had many productive years at DC (Darkseid is his, for example).

I'd accept an argument that Lee without Kirby or Ditko wouldn't have gotten anywhere, but I also think the whole of those partnerships was greater than the sum of their parts.

I have the hardcovers of the Fourth World collections, and OMAC, and I think DC-era Kirby was super groovy and doing all… [more]

The Canadian Library Association has been dissolved.
I was chatting with the head librarian of the library in the faculty where I work at a mid-sized Canadian university, and her take on it was that the CLA had made some mis-steps several years ago, and took a huge reputation hit where they were kind of seen as glad-handers and yes-men, not people taking a serious and principled stand to make noise on behalf of librarians and libraries.

They lost a lot of members over this, and corrective measures over the last few years… [more]

Satan in Poughkeepsie
I saw a stellar interview with Ozzy on I think MuchMusic at the tail end of the '80s; he was obviously addled, and the interviewer asked him about Satanism and satanic lyrics and hidden messages.

Ozzy was bemused, baffled, and stoned off his gourd; his response was essentially "If I could record secret messages on my albums, to make people do whatever I want, I would record the message buy ten more of this album. What good does it do me to tell… [more]
