It's that new server smell everyone loves so much
What's with this javascript stuff that keeps appearing in my profile? The text is all truncated and when I try to edit it there's a javascript link to some site in Asia that Google blocks as containing malware.

A happy ending!
I was disproportionately proud of starting the "wtf is happening to my profile and what's this javascript?" thread that descended into MAN THE LIFEBOATS at about 60 posts per minute by the end.

Mind Performance Hack
Wil Wheaton gave me permission to zombify him for a comic book once -- and not only to kill him and turn him into a zombie, but to bring him back as a zombie celebrity in a way that thoroughly mocks his lack-of-celebrity status.

He gave me enthusiastic permission to kill him, zombify him and mock him. This puts him firmly in my "good guy with a healthy sense of humour" book.

Metafilter's Favorite Things Show!!! You get a pony and You get a pony and YOU GET A PONY!!! *eeeee*
AskMe is now my first stop before my eMusic allocation refreshes every month, and has turned me onto all sorts of good music.

I'm also going to buy better dress shirts thanks to an AskMe, and some other threads are giving me some very good watch purchasing advice.

I just posted moments ago, freshly.
Not only is this not what MetaTalk is for, this is not what brain cells are for.

Well, it seemed like kind of a slow day, and it wasn't in the FAQ. I could call somebody out for a comment they made "a moment ago!!" and slip the question in somewhere, if that would help.

They have actually saved it already but they are going to wait for you so they can do the photo op. The $5000 has already been spent on makeup and FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY IS YOUR WATCHWORD SIRRAH.

Jean Grae on music.metafilter
I was thinking "man, $800 is a lot for 16 bars" too, but if she's signing off all rights, and does a kick-ass recording, that's actually in line with what a (sought-after) professional v/o actor would get paid for a commercial, etc. I'd imagine that rappers "guesting" on other rappers' albums probably get paid somewhere in the neighbourhood.

In for $25, by the way. I have no dog in this fight, as a non-musician, but how would we choose who/what gets… [more]

Well, it's jouke's idea, so I say he should be our point of contact; if he doesn't want to do that then I imagine it's mathowie's perogative.

I've assumed that Jean Grae writes her own lyrics, but other comments here seem to indicate that we need to come up with words for her. If it's our choice, I'd rather she create what she deems appropriate as a real "guesting" thing: her own raps will definitely be better for her than anything we can write. She knows her… [more]

CanadaElectionFilter
...I actually think the posts are pretty redundant too, and getting a bit newsfiltery after the first two. If they stayed on-original-topic that would be one thing, but we're trending towards "general election chat" after the first few comments in each.

Unlike angrybeaver this doesn't really bother me, but I think it's a valid point that there's a level of redundancy in the conversation.

Long live, Metafilter!
You're older than you've ever been
And now you're even older
And now you're even older
And now you're even older

You're older than you've ever been
And now you're even older...

...and now you're older still.

Palin thread weirdness in recent activity.
I actually like the whole "one long thread" thing. It does, however, take over one second for a character to appear in the reply box after I type it, which makes for slow, deliberate responses.

(or replies typed in Notepad and pasted in).

I invite Dave Faris to share with me where on the Internet I can find a higher level of discourse with a similar level of activity than that thread. Are the conversations more civil and intelligent at… [more]

Just because it doesn't exist elsewhere doesn't mean that it wouldn't be nice if we could aspire to and achieve something better than a diuretic knee-jerk echo chamber

So let me see if I have the sequence of events straight:

1. A large number of highly intelligent people discuss a recent nominee to the vice-presidency, on a Web site where all are welcome to contribute after they pay a nominal fee, all of whom are free to… [more]

Show me your nostrils!
As a new(ish) user, I really like the lack of images. When I do a site:metafilter search in Google, I find the old image-enabled threads jarring and noisy (and much less work-browsable).

I find text-only makes the conversation much more adult in an undefinable way -- one side effect of spending a lot of time on MeFi is that it has really driven home how much I hate message boards where everyone has a little dancing avatar and a blinking .sig image.… [more]

So did NoScript in Firefox keep this weird bit of hoo-hah from loading, or do I have a problem on my home computer to tend to tonight?

I hate to repeat the question, but did NoScript in Firefox keep this weird bit of hoo-hah from loading, or do I have a problem on my home computer to tend to tonight?

I am technically savvy enough to have NoScript running, but not savvy enough to know if it saved my compu-bacon.

(say, has anyone tried to contact the site author and explain all this? He's probably just a comic-lovin' fella that has no idea that this is going on.)

In case anyone is still reading, I wrote the site author and he got back to me thusly:
Thanks for the heads-up! I assumed your message was spam at first, actually, but I'm glad I took a look at the link and then checked the files at my host. I have deleted the malware script, and added a note for visitors to let them know that. If you happen across any other problems with the site, don't hesitate to let me know.
So we did some good here today. GO TEAM MEFI. Etc.

Pompous bands do not make good questions.
...I think you mean objective. Unless that was sarcasm.

All AskMe music questions, except for specific lyrics queries, are inherently subjective though, aren't they?

Spam from a MeFi user.
Vincent: You know what they call Spam in Quebec?
Jules: They don't call it Spam?
Vincent: No man, they got the metric system. They wouldn't know what the fuck spam is.
Jules: Then what do they call it?
Vincent: They call it Scrapple.

Actually, the only home-grown Quebec meat spread is Cretons, which sounds disgusting but is actually freaky good, especially on a hangover morning.… [more]

"No, they call it Canadian Spam" can't make sense if they don't know what Spam is, cause they won't have the frame of reference. And the only thing remotely close to Spam, I think, is scrapple.

Outside of Quebec and the above-cited Creton, the ROC actually enjoys delicious KAM, the all-Canadian meat in a can.

Oh, well, if there's MORE inside I'll read it then.
I think you're on your own here. But I appreciate your desire to make this a better place.

I've got nothing against the [more inside] tag, I'm just wondering if other MeFites see it and go "oh boy more inside!" or if most people just kind of ignore it.

The "can I say dick then? Huh? How about cock? What? What? Huh? What?" people are the Internet equivalent of "I'm not touching you I'm not touching you oh my hands are real close but I'm not touching you so you can't do anything because I'm not touching you WAAAAHH HE HIT ME MOOOOMMM!!!!"

A million monkeys... and some editors!
I am a professional advertising copywriter so if you want your book to be reduced to something less than 10 words long, with an artificially dynamic "call to action" but also a weird sterile soullessness that hangs off it like the ammonia stink of the emergency room, I'm your man.

Is it time for MetaFilter consignment?
I am totally replacing my oil furnace with an electric furnace so if anyone close to Sherbrooke, Quebec wants a 500-gallon heating oil tank (2/3 full) I will trade for Amazing Spider-Man comics or maybe a lot of Smarties.

Why do people make a post to say they've sent a mefi mail?
God, you know what would be hilarious? If people requested a blinking envelope for MeFi mail but they used the HTML blink tag in said request. Because then the request itself would blink! Boy, that'd be a laugh riot.

=Noise? Derail? Breaks the guidelines?
I paid $5 to join MetaFilter in part because I heard it was a well-moderated site, and I figure part of that service is having moderators that can look at a multi-flagged post or comment and discern what the problem is, even if the flags aren't precisely worded to pin that problem down.

If a mod can't figure out what's wrong with a post/comment without a specific flag, it's probably not that problematic.

Montréal Meetup? Magnifique!
I'm in if it's a weekend; I'm in Sherbrooke so weeknights are impossible for me. I'd love to meet some of you! Unfortunately the 17th works better for me than the 10th, but I imagine something will shake out one way or the other.
posted to MetaTalk by Shepherd at 11:35 AM on May 5, 2008
The 11th would be okay, but Sundays always give me a built-in time limit of 8 p.m. (I need to get the bus back home to work Monday), whereas Saturdays are pretty open-ended timewise as I usually have a place to crash or the hostel.

Should or shouldn't
I find it hard to believe that anyone thinks metafilter's current design is perfect.

Well, I do. "Perfect" in the sense of "there is nothing that I want to do on MetaFilter that I cannot do, extra functions that I do not use but can see the utility of, and the whole thing seems quite efficient and well-organized."

When I can't think of any obvious way that something could be improved, that's generally "perfect" enough for me, anyway.

Those of you interested in closing signups may want to spend some time browsing the Policy threads at Barbelith, particularly those that focus on the future of the site, an excellent web community that I am also a part of (I'm not an old-school Barbelith poster, but I've been around for a couple of years), which DID close signups for a time as a stopgap measure to respond to trolling.

There are a lot of core differences -- Barbelith has never had a (much less several)… [more]
