Posting cool jobs?
Interestingly, this post led me to go take a look at Jobs, which led me to notice this post for my area, which led me to share it with a number of Indigenous people I know...

https://jobs.metafilter.com/2021/Indigenous-Justice-Lead-Providence-Centre

...so I think I'm lightly in favour of this? I know this organization and know they're quality, it's a fascinating gig, and I would have been happy to help them get the word out however I could (and… [more]

🔊 🎊 🔊 Announcing MetaFilter Events 🔊 🎊 🔊
Kitteh and I just attended the business plan creation Event and it was so good, folks! Exceptionally useful content, but delivered in a way that felt warm and friendly and supportive. No spoilers in case some here will be reviewing the recording. Top notch.

⭐️ Bid for glory with the Metafilter Fundraising Auction! ⭐️
Yes, I was too intimidated to volunteer things this time around, but I feel a little more comfortable now that I'm seeing what's on offer. I think I can contribute some services.

Metatalktail Hour: Off the grid, on the list 🏝
Hm...

Book - Don Quixote
Book series - the Rabbi mysteries by Harry Kemelman? That's kind of a dart throw, but I find them comforting.
Film - The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension!, which is kind of 12 movies in one.
TV series - OG Twilight Zone, partly because there's so many of 'em
Album - Faith No More, Angel Dust
Game - Probably MTG Arena,… [more]

Still wondering after all these years
This song *&^% haunts me. I can sing the whole thing, I have it all so locked into my head; it's well produced and professional and a total mystery despite some game attempts to solve the mystery.

Metatalktail Hour: Good News!
Had a great mini-vacation with my wife, celebrating both my birthday (I bought a skateboard, and my dentist is very excited) and our anniversary, and reconnected with an old friend I haven't seen in 25-ish years. He's a New York Times bestselling writer, and I'm somebody who once had aspirations of writing, and this didn't even precipitate the emotional coulda-woulda-shoulda crisis I was kind of worried it would cause. It was just good to see him.

Got my final thesis paper back to complete my LLM from my supervisor, with considerable work required but not nearly what I was fearing. Also finishing up my last course in the program, and actually really, really enjoying the course's major paper (turns out trademark law is... fun?!?)

[MeFi Site Update] March 16th
As a member of long standing, and from what I understand of the mod team size and strictures, I'm satisfied with what's currently being undertaken and the general pace of change. These seem like incremental but important and actionable steps that focus on some key site goals.

If the marketing deck is publicly available I'd love to see it; not to weigh in or offer "improvements", but just because it seems like it'd be an interesting read.

Metatalktail Hour: Mrs. Malaprop, I resume?
More of a translation issue, but.

I used to work as the sole English person in an ad agency where everyone else was first-language French -- some quite competent in English, but I was the sole Anglo. One of our clients handled a licensed property which featured characters owned by Warner Bros., and like you do, our work involved making material (often point-of-sale store materials, like shelf talkers or special packaging) that put these licensed characters in situations… [more]

Assemble the party
I'm making it work right now not with MeFites but with a group of high school friends where our DM is in Hong Kong and running a game at 9 pm our time / 9 am his time. D&D 5th Ed. It's a good time -- basically saying that it's possible and y'all can do it! I would love to run a Mutants and Masterminds campaign at some point, but I won't practically have the time until I finish my Master's.

Donated By "Anonymous"
I asked an anonymous question once because I was contemplating something that I thought might make colleagues -- some of who I think are MeFites -- look askance at me, and quickly got an answer that from an angle I hadn't thought of, explaining that what I was thinking about was from this angle actually wildly illegal, and I was very grateful for the anonymity that day.

I knew the risks going in of being unable to easily follow up and clarify as I… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: Favorite Visual Art
My wife and I attend the local university's student gallery fundraiser every year -- a lot of artists contribute art, everyone buys a ticket, and then the tickets are used for a draw. When your number is called, you pick a piece to take home with you! It's awesome.

This year, we were so in love with the piece we got -- a painting of the Mothman having a smoke under a tree -- that I secretly reached out to the artist and asked if I could commission her to paint two more… [more]

What Are You Making Now 2: Electric Boogaloo
I refurbished the outdoor sign of a local institution -- a fish and chips shop that was around since the '50s, (the sign's not that old, but it's been there since the '80s) and closed last year -- over the last month. Got some friends coming over to mount it tomorrow night from the roof of our lounge.

I thought I'd just be pulling out the fluorescents and putting in some rope light, but decades of rust damage, old wasps nests, and the fact that all the blue... paint?… [more]

People vs Garbage
I have a long tradition of immediately thinking "oh, come on" when somebody points out that a phrase I use that I've never used with ill intent and don't make the same associations about may not be super great. And then 48 hours later realizing I'm wrong.

I've never mentally constructed "garbage person" in a way that relates to "white trash", and I don't parse "garbage person" as anything other than "this… [more]

Metatalktail Hour: RESOLVED!
My stealth resolution seems to have been "schedule all the things." It wasn't an overt idea going into the year, but after looking at the loads o' stuff I'm busy with, actually blocking my pre- and post-workday into half-hour chunks and allocating that time (with plenty of blocks for "goofing off", it's not all work-work-work) seems to be something I get a lot of satisfaction from.

Metatalktail Hour: Favorite MetaFilter Moments
I guess I can de-anonymize myself at this point and say that AskMe prevented me from making possibly the worst mistake I would have ever made in my life, in terms of steering me away from a disastrous career decision due to being burnt out and shellshocked and not realizing it at the time. I can't say "not a day goes by," but I think of that thread about once a month or ever six weeks or so, and thank Saint Mathowie and all his moderatin' angels for having pulled me off that track.

Best of the Best of the Best, Sir! With Honors, Sir!
In 1993, I was in my second year of university in Toronto, living in the Ryerson residence on the 10th floor; one of those apartment-style spaces where five bedrooms shared a kitchenette, two bathrooms, and a living space. There was a federal election going on at the time, and one day there's a knock at the door and I answer it and it's a kid -- well, somebody around my age, so a "kid" from my perspective now -- asking how I'm going to vote.

So I tell him I… [more]

Visualizing the impact of US politics megaposts on the blue
I like the megathreads, both as a reader and as a way of "clumping" a lot of political angst in one place instead of having "crap President is crap" posts several times a day.

And maybe they suck the air out of the site, but POTUS45 has sucked the air out of me. I have to admit I'm spending more time thinking "maybe if I, and people like me, spent more time being vocal and active in politics, and less time marveling at… [more]

This is what MeFite democracy looks like!
Greetings from Canada!

I spent an hour tonight writing letters to the Chambers of Commerce and/or tourism boards of every state that I have vacationed in during the last 10 years: New York, Vermont, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and more. I included specific details about what I loved about each state, and why I would love to return.

Then wrote that I would not return while Donald Trump is President. And that many of my friends are… [more]

What's the word?
my introduction to classic pop and rock hits being mediated by prior exposure from Weird Al parodies and polka medleys, hearing the originals only years later as I moved from childhood into adulthood and carrying around a quiet gut insistence that e.g. Smoke On The Water is about 200 bpm and involves an accordion

That is exactly my experience as well; being (I suspect) slightly older there's also a lot of gut feelings that many hit songs of the '80s… [more]

A kind word doesn't cost a thing.
Tonight I toast the B-list, those who don't have the time to engage as often as they'd like, don't quite boast the rapier wit of our highest-profile members, and who never, ever appear on these sorts of lists, or the "best of" threads, or any other celebration-of-members posts.

It's so easy your 24 year old son could master it!
I am just going to roll with "So easy Immortan Joe could do it!" from now on, unless it is a question relating to running a slave-based post-apocalypse economy, driving some sort of bolted-together hell car, or just being generally horrible, as he raises that bar fairly high in those areas.

Suggestion: instead of posting comments such as "I can't see this!", "don't you know this is paywalls!" and "I've made a Meta about how dumb you are!"

I assume this was prompted by the copious Comedy Central links in the Key & Peele post. I'd considered finding some workaround, but there's just no real good option there.

Actually, it was spurred by a post entirely structured around a particular piece of music used for hip-hop breaks, but confusion about which main-page post is behind it is kind of illustrative that this isn't a one-off unicorn of a problem.

Bad deletions
I was kind of in the "yeah, but..." camp, but LobsterMitten's response off the top, and a lot of the discussion here, has brought me roundly around to the "good deletion" camp.

I'm a doofy cis white guy and I can indulge in chin-scratching doofy cis-white "but I don't get it" conversations with the best of them, but I guess my key takeaway here is that my curiosity about these issues doesn't need to be satisfied this very minute.… [more]
