it's only natural
There’s nothing to stop pests from eating it, indeed with lots of older wall coverings (especially pasted wallpaper and plasters) it’s historically a serious problem. The main barrier is that in all these recipes there’s just not very much of the food ingredient used as the thickener/binder/emulsifier compared to water, so cockroaches and rats usually find something better before they eat the walls.

The edibility problem of these recipes was also the historical appeal… [more]

A Simple Question
An election in a democracy probably looks very strange to outsiders, takes a long time, costs a huge amount of energy and stress, ends up with a lot of hurt feelings and tears, but in the end it will end with a result most people are happy with. (Inefficient but effective).

An election in a non-democracy is much easier. Everyone votes, the Single Party gets 95%, the Leader wins again, but who knows whether most people are satisfied with the result? (Effective, but inefficient).

Young adult wants to move internationally for a long distance love
she plans to take a one way flight to the literal other side of the world as a permanent move
A lot depends on which country this actually is, and what passport she has, because many/most countries will greet her at the passport desk, hear this plan, and deport her straight back on a return flight at her own cost, and with a no-entry record (at best)! Presumably she has no in-demand professional skills, or potential to invest. Ask her: is there actually a migration pathway at all?

Boring fight scenes in older movies
There is also the matter of known visual references now being repeatable as shorthand—consider Errol Flynn’s sword fight scene (1938), which a modern viewer yawns at as a set of clichés; oh, jumping off stairs, shadows fencing, how boring, except that: these older films are where the clichés come from.

"Exceptions" to White Supremacy
Nick Fuentes and Kanye West having dinner with Donald Trump is, as someone put it, an intersectional recognition of mutual struggles, which brings people with disparate interests and values together in a way that is inclusive of their differences, in a framework respectful of potential conflict, but you know.

The other kind.

Getting over regret about not studying overseas
In a previous career I was a tutor and casual lecturer at Australian universities. I studied with, and taught, a lot of international students, so I can tell you that the one thing they all described was that it was incredibly hard. Every one.

Every one described the experience as socially isolating, because between study and work, they had so little time to build relationships. Only the extremely rich students were able to escape working long hours… [more]

Can I store this? (a dairy milk variation of can-i-eat-this)
If it's UHT shelf stable milk, sure. They've already been exposed to who knows what temperature variation in storehouses, in distribution centres, on pallets, in trucks, and on shelves.

People known by the definite article
'The Prophet' is at least as well-used by both Muslims and non-Muslims, for Muhammad, as his name. And the Quran has many, many names for him, many of them beginning with a definite article.

'The Buddha' for Siddartha Gautama.

'The Preacher' (Kohelet,Quoheleth) is the attributed and self-described author of Ecclesiastes.

Filmmaking filter: How do I convey a character pounding on a door?
Two shots:
1. the character's fist about to pound the door, then cut
2. the door from the inside, shaking, with big thump noises

Classic horror movies for a middle school class
It will depend on your class's tolerance for crass sexual humour, but consider Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein in this list. Brooks being incredibly well-read as a film and vaudeville historian hismself, it was an erudite parody of this era of films, right down to reusing 1930s sets.

Shall I tell you what's wrong with it?
Perhaps, as it sounds, your ex-boyfriend's friend was closer in friendship to him than he was to you, they enjoyed (between themselves) a tone of mutual banter that would have lost its meaning, and been read as actual criticism, outside that context. In which case your ex's cut-off was a wise warning.

The difference, for example, between your friends roasting you in the group chat, and someone giving the same treatment to someone they don't know well.

Historic trends in retail/shopping floor space
Yes superilla has identified the historical problem with definitions, but I'll add some more speaking as a planner/heritagist. What we identify as 'ground area dedicated to retail' is a thing that's been specifically brought into being by regulation in most societies where it exists, as a matter of deliberate zoning, law, and of designed conglomeration of uses. Also, suprisingly recently in urban history, largely in the 19th century. Sprawled malls are a consequence of car culture, true, but the… [more]

Would I be stupid to (not) accept this?
I am in a managerial role in a volunteer organisation, a State based volunteer emergency response service. It's very rewarding. It doesn't sound like that's anything like this.

I would take the role only if what you're interested in is actually the experience of managing and leading, with the understanding that the only reward to voluntarism is voluntarism itself. Otherwise, absolutely not.

Attracted to my same-sex therapist, should I find a new one?
people falling in love with therapists is a cliché among professionals

It's also called transference, the phenomenon where a client/patient attaches positive (or negative) attributes-feelings from elsewhere in life to a therapeutic relationship. Your therapist will certainly be aware of it as identifying it is a foundational part of the job.

(Humanities) PhD horror stories
I love learning for the sake of it.

Mate, you want a library card, not a PhD. You don't need a doctorate to learn, a doctorate is a specific qualification for academic research in the unique context of the university (and to a lesser extent, in the sciences, in research institutes and firms).

I began but didn't finish a doctorate in history; it started as an interesting research area but it became a sprawling unfocused research mess that was… [more]

Yes, it's to do with the firefighting effort, not the state of the fire (which may be burning fiercely while completely contained, or even 'safe'). Here's an Australian version of the terminology, which has differences but is similar to the North American practice.

Party like it's 1999, work like it's 2015 (Macbook workstation setup)
At my place I've got a laptop stand on a spring that lifts the laptop a good 30cm off the desk, which I use with a separate keyboard. Hikes for open-minded urbanites
There's heaps in Sydney. Maybe the closest to your spec is the Spit to Manly walk, both ends of which are accessible by public transport and which has harbour views throughout. Get a bus to the Spit Bridge, have an afternoon's walk through national park, there's amazing views of the city, headlands, and harbour throughout, sidetrack to the beach if you want, finish with beers on the Manly pier, go home on the ferry. It's honestly a glorious afternoon out.

I have a very similar bridge to you, three of my upper front teeth. When I had it put in my dentist was most concerned about getting the bite-contact right. On that ground alone I'd go back, and say look, the bite isn't right, can you please make it good, and I would expect that as a normal part of medical aftercare.

So, what do Christians do in heaven?
Is that mentioned anywhere?

Biblically, description of capital-H Heaven—indeed, afterlife at all—is really pretty thin. Christ famously argues that God is the God of the living, not the dead, and that in the resurrection we are as angels, though that's rather more him describing the role of God, and defying bad-faith logic-traps set by his critics. Elsewhere describes it as being easier for camels to pass through the eyes of needles than for the rich to enter the kingdom… [more]

Well any possible feelings of guilt I had would have finished right at this point.

With respect to the ethics of it; if it's purely a mistake, then ethics don't enter into it, errors are just errors, not ethical breaches. Everyone makes mistakes. To my mind there'd only be an ethical problem of yours if this happened for some reason beyond an error, e.g. because… [more]

I also had to leave a PhD program, for my own wellbeing and because it just wasn't going to happen. There is a huge, diverse, and widespread Freemasonry of us.

How do I rephrase "the answer is white male patriarchy"?
An urban planner's answer is that it's decisions about the environment that are passed down to the future, and the world we live in now just reflects those decisions that were made by people in the past; either by small groups of powerful people, or broad societies preferring certain ways of life. And that's an answer that's rather agnostic about economic systems—the former Soviet societies were also very invested in planning their environments, and did much worse in terms… [more]
