For worldwide recognition, the Shahada in Islam ('there is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet') would have to be up there, in variants (some 'I bear witness that', and so on).

I submit Theodore Roosevelt may or may not have been stronger, but absolutely had personal beliefs more centred on fighting and personal physical strength.

What if all jurors are threatend after jury is seated and trial started?
It all depends where. In common law countries you would not have a ‘default’ ruling, guilty or otherwise; you may have a mistrial.

In NSW where I am, first, intimidation like this would be its own separate [extremely serious] offence. Secondly, the judge would have the option of either declaring a mistrial and starting again, or continuing proceedings as judge-alone.

Why is the spacebar still needed in typing written language?
It's the Scunthorpe problem. Interpreting words in the absence of spaces often depends a lot of context that isn't easily automated.

requiem
There have been lots of histories of religious movements (take the various Great Awakenings in US history), as well as the reverse, secularisation in societies over time, particularly the UK (take the Death of Christian Britain for example). In Britain the history of it is to the point that you can talk about a 'secularisation debate' over what exactly the decline of institutional religion means, and what has caused it.

To your gut I'd observe that, there are very… [more]

Gently, the way you and others here define 'faith' 'belief' and 'spirituality' seem so broad as to be useless for actually identifying what it is about how people interact with the world that's numinous. In the twentieth century, the Soviet Union officially, and more or less successfully, made Russia, much of eastern Europe, a good deal of central Asia, and the lives of its foreign socialist followers, atheist. But does that kind of totally atheist Marxism-Leninism also count as a 'faith'? Where… [more]

Looking for a particular Orwell reflection on colonialism and economics
One such is in The Road To Wigan Pier (pp191--192):

Under the capitalist system, in order that England may live in comparative comfort, a hundred million Indians must live on the verge of starvation--an evil state of affairs, but you acquiesce in it every time you step into a taxi or eat a plate of strawberries and cream. The alternative is to throw the Empire overboard and reduce England to a cold and unimportant little island where we should all have to work very hard… [more]

Is the exhaust smelling air when you wait for airplane takeoff bad?
A lot of what you're smelling on the airport tarmac is unburned fuel and fumes, as well as exhaust from fully burned fuel. Aircraft engines, especially jet engines, are most efficient at high altitudes and at cruising speed, and very inefficient at low speeds (taking off, landing, taxiing, and especially idling). As hoyland says, the cabin's pressurisation/ventilation system---which includes its own filters---draws air from the outside, and when you're not moving, that includes waste from… [more]

What Are Some Songs About Other Songs?
It’s not a lyrical reference, but Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture contains long passages of the Marseillaise (to represent the invading French) and the former anthem ‘God Save The Tsar’ (the successful defence).

Part-time law enforcement?
In NSW (and other Australian forces) in the 19th and 20th centuries ‘Special Constables’ were temporarily sworn-in officers in the context of events the regular police were too small to handle, for riot control, and especially in the case of large strikes and industrial action. They were used during the First World War and in the strikes of the 1920s, and the legislation for them was current well into the later 20thC. (It’s different now, ‘Special Constables’ are full-time police who have a… [more]

The philsophy and mechanisms of segregation, othering, and geography
What I'm really curious about is the step lower, and the step higher

Well the step higher is one of the foundational questions of the whole field of sociology as an academic discipline, so you'll run into a colossal literature running through a hundred and fifty or more years of study. Social cohesion is one of the terms you might be interested in; social ties, community formation, social capital. Older and more dated terms, no longer in use (at least in the normative… [more]

Living in a ambulance?
Ambulances tend to have very hard service lives, by the nature of the use they’re put to. They’re driven urgently every single day and don’t necessarily get the maintenance other working vehicles do. I’d look very hard mechanically at any former ambulance I was buying.

That said, if what you’re after is a van to live in, pay attention to the models that are used for ambulances in your area, they’re usually highly adaptable and the parts plentiful. Mercedes Sprinter vans, where I am.

Snowflakes in Sydney, STAT!
Most North Americans are surprised by how well you can get around Sydney by public transport. Unless you’ve got a specific work need for a hire car (i.e. your site is out in the suburbs somewhere) you can do almost all of what you want in Sydney, Blue Mountains included on buses and trains, cheaply. The ferries are worth catching in their own right.

Cairns and the GBR by contrast will blow your budget out very fast, and it’s a long way for a weekend trip (and yes,… [more]

Be aware that if you're arriving this Saturday 27th Jan, that this is the middle of the Australia Day (26th Jan) public holiday long weekend, which may mean fewer places will be open than normal, and cafes and restaurants may have surcharges. It shouldn't affect your Weekend 1 plan too much, but might add 10%-20% cost to the meals and flat whites.

If you could fly, how would the FAA handle that?
Not being facetious: since most of these characters operate as an alter-ego of a secret identity, they’d likely be operating illegally, or at least quasi-legally, from the go, since they would be unlicensed or else risk ‘outing’ themselves to the civil aviation authority.

Group decision-making on zoom
You can use the Roberts Rules (or any other variation) but the critical thing is to appoint someone as a chair.

It doesn't really matter who, and you can have a rotating chair, but that person is there to take responsibility for the conduct of the meetings, for clarifying your norms and expectations, to set boundaries, and---once you've made them---confirm the content of any decisions you make. They're not accountable for the actual decisions… [more]

First attacks on humanitarian workers
I think this is only definitional (in the sense of 'aid workers' being classed as such as a category of persons, and 'humanitarian aid' being considered as an activity). There were attacks like this throughout the 20thC—both the German and Allied air forces in WWII used the technique of following bombing raids to target rescuers and response teams. The reason armed conflict law protects hospitals and evacuation centres so strongly is because attacks on them have happened all the time.

How to de-mildew my dishwasher?
Dishwasher cleaner tablets or fluid are pretty good for cleaning out machines. You run them either in a cycle of their own, or with an ordinary cycle.

The bad news is that your dishwasher almost certainly doesn't depend on the hot water from the domestic system. Modern dishwashers have their heating element built into them (and get a good deal hotter than a domestic system), so if it's failed, you are looking at either a repair or replacement, eventually, or going back to hand-washing dishes.

Alcohol isn’t going to help you alas. Only splashing.

Here’s what I do when I, a huge softie of cold water, go swimming in the surf: get in up to my knees, then splash lots of the cold water on my head, hair, neck, back, underarms. Then again. Then I dive in and scream once and then it’s fine. And then I get out before I go blue
