Special Event: 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup: Quarter-finals
In my group chat all my friends' children are going to school wearing green and gold for the Matildas. It's incredibly wholesome. (Australia to beat France, you heard it here first).

I will say this: Do not underestimate Colombia.

The whole country is rooting for Australia. You heard me. And I am certain that some of the children that result will have have their names spelled ‘Cortnee’

Special Event: 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup: Round of 16
I have just been to the match, it was glorious, most of the crowd was up way past their bedtime and are likely to be late for school tomorrow. Pretty great all round

Special Event: 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup: Match Day 3
[extremely youth pastor voice] yes, after a long despairing period of grief and shock, Sam Kerr is coming back after three matches to save Australian chances. But do you know who else

Australia is having some Feelings about Tony Gustavsson right now. 'Oh we need some speed in the counterattack , let's sub off Vine and Raso'. Anyway, Nigeria were just too good and I can see them being powerhouses in the finals should they make it out of the group.

Canada! We're coming for you with our questionable tactical choices!

Spotted in the crowd: an Irish flag with the slogan ‘OOH AH / UP THE MNÁ’ which is as the Irish say ‘a bit spicy’

If Nigeria can salvage the 0-0 out of this it would be a huge upset and an achievement. And, not coincidentally, give advantage to Australia getting out of the group. Go the Super Falcons.

W/r/t time synchronisation. In 1990 for the World Cup in Italy, FIFA famously used Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma as marketing. The Australian SBS tv channel, which broadcast all the matches live in Italian time (meaning: in the middle of the local night or extremely early morning) used the song as marketing here but with footage of bleary eyed people watching television under blankets. Nessun Dorma! None shall sleep!

Movie: The Wedding Singer
I am fascinated by Adam Sandler's career; for a moment he made a trio of genuinely good films. Billy Madison remains endearingly stupid, Happy Gilmore is one of the better sports movie parodies, and there's The Wedding Singer, which is a near-perfect romantic comedy, where the leads just work. Yet the rest of everything Adam Sandler touches is inimitable garbage! He's shown he can, but he chooses not to! It's the mystery of life, man.
