Sydney City to Surf 2015
Yes I am running this one. Mutual online support sounds like a good plan.

Taff mate I'm good. Making trouble. Running training. I am after the goal of 1hr 14 minutes which is what I did last time. I'm Fiasco and this is my story.

Sydney meetup?
OK, unless there's anything I've forgotten, I'm in. Can I suggest we don't go upstairs to the rooftop bar? Or go up, have a look at the nice view, then get back down into the warmth?

That +googlecal is a nice addition, I've never noticed it. Cool.

Stanmore is barely the Inner West! Tccchk. These days Birrong/Regents Park is barely the Inner West. If the Domain editors had their way, the Eastern Suburbs would stop at about Strathfield, the Inner West would extend to Bonnyrigg and you'd start the Northern Beaches one stop after Milson's Point. You heard it here first: Airds/Minto/Ingleburn is the new Paddington. Mind you, give or take a hundred years of sea level rise and we'll be forcing the matter.

Man you need to branch out from the barely half-way to Petersham Parramatta Road buses and onto the Bankstown and East Hills lines. Live a little. (For a little while the last Sydney IRL was mapped somewhere in a suburban pub in Cabramatta, which would have made for some interesting navigation. Or some good pork rolls.)

Jesus, don't you know *anything*? Orders at Stanmore Maccas are made only by combining the forces of all your cousins combined, making, with the power of a Honda Civic, the Fully Sick Subwoofer. Or maybe even the Stanmore McDonald's carpark has gentrified. I'm scared. hold me, Habib

Web-goddess, I may have to disagree with you. The only thing worse than the tedious original song is that pompous wanker John Bell pompously pompoussing like a pompous, pompous... Well, I watched the video, and cringed, until he came on at which point I just burst out laughing. From tragedy to comedy, a rocket from the crap. Leslie Neilsen couldn't have done it better. Mind you, Angus and Julia Stone are appropriate artists to cover Nick Cave: middle-class self-absorbed urgers pretending they… [more]

I said it was worst, I also said it was hilariously worst. It's Worst of Perth funny. I've got a shirt with lyrics from The Ship Song on it. Somebody tried to buy it off my back at Homebake. Hah. My theories about the venally commercial motivations of Nick Cave fans are reconfirming themselves. See a Bad Seeds collection in the CD case, find Robert Kiyosaki and John Gray self-help books on the shelf.

I'm not going to gainsay your hard-earned and well-displayed music credibility, LiB. I'm just saying Nick Cave is the choice of the Australian middle classes who want easily digestible music for social climbing purposes. He writes his music unthreatening, easily intelligible, and friendly, even when he's trying to be deep and soulful. Hell even when he was doing hard-rock back in the 80s, you could understand all the words and sing along. He is the Wiggles of Australian rock 'n' roll. John… [more]

Don't leave out Ben Lee or Bernard Fanning or the Whitlams, when you go up with your roll of $2 coins, web-goddess. As a middle-class white bloke with no aesthetic taste, I wouldn't want to feel threatened or challenged.

He writes about rape and murder and necrophillia and obsession So does Shakespeare. So does Patricia Cornwell.

Well, since we're doing great lines of Australian pop, I nominate this song (starting about 1'30") as having a few crackers.

Taff: train to Circular Quay station on the Inner West or Bankstown line, then about five minutes' walk uphill. Don't bother with a bus at that time of day, you'd be better off walking down George St.

Incidentally, if anyone's looking for me, I'll be the one in skinny jeans, an old jacket, lank shoulder-length hair, heroin- and cigarette-scarred sunken eyes, droopy moustache, frown, and a bass that sounds like it's coming less from my mouth than from somewhere around my navel.

Good to meet everyone! And I look forward to qwip's pictures to see how awkward I look next to the world's cutest not-quite-toddler. AmbroseChapel, try a search under "Devonshire Street Tunnel" on pictureaustralia.org. It's a brilliant collaboration between libraries and archives--I could spend all day on there if I didn't have to work. For bonus eye-opening material, do an image search under location "National Archives of Australia" and image creator "ASIO".… [more]

Matt, and remember to steer clear of "prominent Griffith businessmen" & "colourful Sydney racing identities" Matt, avoid also "major urban developer of the South Coast" and "nightclub entrepreneur". If only we could make those export, not domestic, industries.

A Beer in Sydney on 3/9?
I'm on the evening shift as well that night, but if you're still going by 9-9.30 or so, I may be able to make it.

Although I can't make it at all, I note that the map's displaying a 96 Cumberland Road in Cabramatta which is needless to say a long way from the Glenmore in The Rocks.

Sydney meetup to cheer up divabat
Or if anyone isn't too keen on walking the 10 minutes from Central, all the buses from Railway Square go up Broadway and pass Bay Street. The AYH is a good choice, very public transport friendly and the kitchen's top notch for pub food. Thus: 16 January, this Sunday evening, early dinnertime?
