Finishing my grandfather's work: stained glass menorah
There were definitely some impossible-when-taken-literally corners in Milt's design, yeah. I got good enough mileage out of a skinny grinder bit and just accepting that literal sharp corners weren't gonna happen; you could probably do the same with a little adaptation, and avoid having to lay out for anything fancier than a grinder bit. (Or maybe like a dremel and bit if you don't have an actual grinder?)

The one potentially really helpful new tool that's also within… [more]

Ha! I didn't even notice it over here, saw waxy mention it somewhere yesterday. I've used my emeritus mod powers to link it up after the fact now.

Anoited
Oh, this is delightful. I, too, am not great at Noita; I got fairly deep a couple times when I was really hitting my head against it, but mostly by narrowly outrunning shit that was absolutely gonna kill me once it caught up. It's such a lovely chaotic mess of a game, and so utterly atmospheric for something so minimally pixely.

Yeah, if you can get a real good drill build going you can really sort of eliminate entirely the question of "walls" or "floors" and move downward pretty aggressively as long as you're a bit careful near the temples. You can't outrun trouble entirely but you sure can get a head start.

I've been delighted to see this making the rounds! Just saw that Rock Paper Shotgun posted about it as well. I'm so glad you documented the process like this, that's one of my favorite things in creative work from folks who are online.

It depends on a mix of specific familiarity with Moonlight Sonata and generally being steeped in the harmonic conventions of westerns classical music, I guess. Because this piece sounds like two things to me:

1. Tonally adventurous, modern piano music, or
2. Someone fucking up Moonlight Sonata spectacularly.

If I wasn't already familiar with Moonlight Sonata, it'd just sound to me like some 20th C. experimental piano composition; the… [more]

Red Square, watercolor and pencil on paper, 6"x6" 12/15/18
I haven't thought much about whether or how to sell 'em yet. Partly it's a question of whether I'd be okay with parting them out; while I've done a lot of painting in short series where each painting feels reasonable standing alone, this feels more like a unit to me, a cohesive whole. I dunno, I'm still chewing on it!

Metafilter Leaderboard
Obligatory moderator disclaimer that stats are just stats, there are no and will never be official site leaderboards, and as with all datawrangling outings the core goal is do interesting things with data and don't be a dingus about anything.

Happy datawanking note: coooooool. I love seeing different lenses into this sort of thing; also well-loved in this context is the long-running Infodumpster, maintained by Combustible Edison Lighthouse, and that in turn is powered… [more]

Thanks for having me!
Oh man, I'm immediately grinning at this. I don't listen to Q&Q but I've listened to enough public radio and podcasts that the greeting/thanks ritual's absolutely familiar. Hearing it disembodied and clumped together is weird and delightful; it's a great concept, executed nicely. The way it ends up throwing a spotlight on every little variation and oddity in this or that bookend bit. The guy who paused; the woman with the stronger accent; the guy who crammed 50 words into his… [more]

Oh, I love the layering-Bob idea, yeah. And doing a comparison between various different hosts in this salutation format is a great idea too.

As I think about it, I bet the better fit for LIFO hijinks would be television content; our ability to sort out a ton of visual information rapidly and store and classify at least little bits of it would probably make that kind of nesting easier to produce a response for. At the same time I wonder if there'd be as good of a… [more]

Some real real good stuff there around 3:30 and on into the next minute, would pass easily for a hot-shit drum solo during a jazz show.

I feel like this one comes off as a little more modal than some of the others, like the shifts from one emergent pattern to the next feel more abrupt, more discrete; maybe it's the sharpness of the various percussive sounds, where there's obviously some reverb/room in there but the cowbell hits and the snare are still real tight short… [more]

Art by Josh Millard
Let's do a live stream sometime.

I've thought about time lapses but I worry that a livestream of me painting very carefully and cursing occasionally and not being able to keep up a line of chatter while getting anything done would make for deadly dull viewing. Maybe if I have an idea for something relatively kinetic, though.

How do you take the photos of your pieces? I've taken some photos of my paintings using my… [more]
