Movie: Spider-Man: No Way Home
It finally came out here, and of all the movies I've seen since it's seemed safe enough to give it a try (though that's probably ending soon), Spider-Man was easily the best. I enjoyed it immensely, and it just gave me a warm happy glow that lasted for long after the end credits.

I'd never seen much of the Garfield movies, as they just seemed like Sony making sure to keep the IP, and everything I'd heard was terrible, but I liked what he brought. At first, I thought he… [more]

Movie: The Matrix Resurrections
I just got back from watching it, and I enjoyed it. It seemed like an interesting and plausible continuation. The idea of sentients choosing to seek out and live with humans, and that the second war was between machine factions. The idea of the Analyst who uses emotions and feelings to build a better mousetrap than the Architect (who disdained them, to his failure) seemed, again, like a believable extension of the original, almost on par with how, in the terminator films, the threat of Skynet… [more]

Watched it last night and I found myself dreaming about it. So there's something there to chew on.

I’ve caught myself paying more attention to flocks of birds wheeling in the sky. There’s stuff from this movie that will linger with me. Am I in a rush to see it again? No, not really, but I am happy that I have seen it, and enjoyed it maybe more for what was attempted than what was actually accomplished, if that makes any sense.

The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue
I got definite “Conan wearing his crown on a troubled brow” vibes from Fett on the throne. If we can’t ever get the proper old Conan story, I’d settle for one with Boba Fett.

Looking back over the series, I loved a lot about it, the feel of things, the music, the way things looked, a lot of that was just perfect.

The thing that bugs me about the whole show, though, is that it too often feels like a video game rather than a story. Too many side quests to get a Mcguffin that will allow the next stage to be unlocked. The egg in season one felt like the most blatant example, but even in the previous episode, from having to go to an entirely new… [more]

As far as Grogu’s blood, I just assumed it’s going to end up being where all those clones of Snoke come from. I mean, you had tanks full of terrible mishaps and what, and it was only a year ago that an incredibly poorly thought out film purported to end the main storyline, and there were, for no obvious reason, similar tanks filled with more Snokes.

Movie: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
I think this movie might have finally put the nail in the coffin for me. I can’t see myself really getting excited about any sort of Star Wars that comes out after this, and it’s hard realizing that.

I’m 43. Star Wars was probably the first story that I loved. It *was* my childhood. I always wanted to see the rest of the series, from the first time I heard the rumor that it was supposed to be nine movies long. And then the prequels came out, and they were largely crap,… [more]

It wasn't clear to me what the spectators in that arena actually were. I mean, they didn't seem like people.

The thing is, I honestly doubt Abrams could give you a convincing answer either way. They (to Abrams) looked cool, and added... something to the scene, so there they were. And then they died (?) to show the good guys won. It’s another example in a movie full of them that spectacle > plotting that is Abrams style.

The Mandalorian: The Child
The egg side quest felt like a Borderlands busywork grind, in the sort of less fun part that makes Borderlands less fun on replay, down to the recovered Macguffin being something absurd and wasteful.

I'm still waiting for this series to grab me and make me feel like it has any there there. It looks cool, but so far, I'm just not sold.

Movie: Miami Vice
I’m definitely on board with the feel and look of the film being the reason for watching it, well past any attempt at story or coherence. I like it a lot, based on the visual feel of the film. It’s just entrancing to look at, and probably an amazing example of luck. Without the massive storms that threatened filming, and the choice to run with it, and capture the incredibly menacing clouds approaching, I doubt it would be anywhere as interesting to watch, and it would have been utterly forgotten… [more]

Movie: Deadwood
I’m finally getting around to watching the movie, and as eagerly as I’ve waited for it since the series ended, I almost wish I hadn’t seen it. It bears too much in common with returning home too infrequently, only to find the people I’ve grown up knowing had faded while I was away, had turned to frailty where I’d remembered strength. The movie has me thinking of my uncle, a big, imposing figure, with a body almost exactly like what I’ve grown into, a round, proud belly and an ass that’s made… [more]

Game of Thrones: The Long Night
I just managed to finish the episode, and it was pretty unbearably tense for me, and at points, I wanted to turn it off and read a recap instead. The Dothraki charge was beautiful, and the build of watching the swords flames going out was terrifying, but I hated that the Dothraki were built up as such a strong force only to be thrown away/used to demonstrate the threat level. And yeah, the stuff about the unsullied and their sheild wall/spear tactics being useless just got aggravating, though… [more]

Not today.

Wasn't that Syrio Forel's last words?

Those were his last on screen words. After defeating the entirety of the kings guard with half a practice sword, he escaped back to his home, and met a lovely person, married them, and raised a family. Happily ever after.

Right!?

Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
Just off the top of my head, the dead people next episode:

Gendry, because it’s a horror movie, and having sex means you die.

Brienne, because she got what she wanted most, so she can literally die happy.

Tormund, because Brienne will be brought back as a wight, and he won’t be able to fight her.

Theon, because something something redemption.

Lady Mormont, because we… [more]

Not that this is likely, but it would be sort of hilarious if all the talk of how expensive and massive the battle is in the next episode, if they just didn’t show it.

After all, so much of the books was a build up into a large crisis point, or battle, or whatever, then cutting away from it to another character’s perspective, leaving the reader to learn the outcome from a different, often uninvolved source. After all, how much of Rob Stark’s story was presented by… [more]

The series ends with Dany on her wooden throne, a contentious queen

So are you saying that, maybe, she’ll wear her crown on a troubled brow? Or would that be a tale for another time?

Game of Thrones: No One
As mentioned above, Tyrion getting all wistful talking about the future got me all worried. That's the SoIaF version of hearing something in the basement and telling everyone you'll be right back as you go to check it out, alone, and with a flashlight that has a dying battery.

Game of Thrones: Blood of My Blood
Given the not-exactly-overwhelming nature of the episode, my money is on the sudden pronoun explosion between the waif and Jaqen being lazy writing more than anything else.

It seems this is a groundwork episode, so people can get reminded of the Freys, the Tully's, the Brotherhood, and the fact that, hey, there's still massive strife and war going on. Hopefully there's enough time left to make a decent payoff.

WWE Raw: The Extreme Rules Go-Home
A bit late, but the opening kick for the fatal Fourway made me so happy, especially the sort of nonchalant reaction to it by Miz and Cesaro. I liked that there were no real team ups, only people taking advantage of situations (the Owens dive onto Miz strung between the ropes on one side and certain swing on the other side for one example). That match deserves enshrinement and to serve as a roadmap for how to do a proper fatal Fourway. The most positive relationship in the match was grudging… [more]

Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker
I liked the episode (except for shaggydog), but I wasn't exactly whelmed by the Tower of Joy fight. Maybe the Mountain vs the Viper spoiled me, but honestly, this comic version of the fight was more of what I was hoping for, and doesn't cut out half of the dialogue. The editing of the dialogue really cuts into the feeling that there are rules being followed, and that there is a very formal finality to the words, as if the recitation is ritualistic in the repetition. That there was no repetition,… [more]

Where was Ice at this time?

I was sort of hopping for at least a nod to the whole "magic sword" thing. For the most part, they've pretty much let that fall by the wayside, which is unfortunate because you'll never have a more dedicated fanbase for a sword and sorcery show than people who want to know what plus level Ice is, and if it's got any special abilities. Having Ice against Dawn would have been pretty fantastic.… [more]

D'oh. I think I just lost points off my nerd card. Damn. So what's stronger then, Valyrian steel or meteorite sword? And why didn't the show give us the magic sword showdown we so richly deserve for sticking through the lean years (season five, if you will)?

I think that Jon is okay with following the letter of the law because, as said above, he tried to do the right thing and people got stabby. Sure, they hung the four people, but I think there were a good deal more that did the stabbing, though maybe I'm mistaken. Either way, he died for his brothers, at the hands of his brothers, and he's hand quite enough of that.

WWE Raw: The Payback Go-Home
It would be nice to see them doing something with the rest of the women. Sasha Banks, Becky, Paige, and Emma could all put on better matches than the Ambrose and Jericho time filler. I can only hope New Day is at least on commentary, because it would be a waste to not have them on the show.

Granted, they're stuck doing something with Ryback, but I'd much rather see Tyler Breeze being used in the Kalisto match. There is at least somewhere to go with Prince Pretty, but… [more]

In a just world, there would be a video of Owens hanging upside down from the ankle, swaying back and forth, explaining to Sami Zayn that they are destined to do this forever.

The two of them are literally found gold. All Vince needs to do is stay out of it, and we have a feud that could run for years. Belts or no, they'll steal every show they're a part of, even if it's just talking at each other in the ring.

I just hope that someday, we get… [more]

I wasn't surprised to see Sandow released, but definitely saddened by the waste of a fantastic wrestler and character. It makes me wonder sometimes how many writers there are working for wwe because so many wrestlers seem to fall through the cracks. Seeing as the show is all about making things interesting and compelling for the fans, it might behoove them to start figuring out the gaping hole in the central concept of putting on a show.

Personally, I'd like to see… [more]

Movie: Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no haka)
A friend bought the dvd, watched it, then gave it to me. Mrs. Ghidorah is traumatized by the film, as most Japanese people are. Every August, the movie is played on broadcast television, and if she happens on a commercial for the broadcast while changing channels, she actually collapses into a fetal position for roughly five to ten minutes at a time, and goes through several tissues until she can stop crying. This happens every year, and every time the commercial comes on,… [more]

Moonorb, for pretty much the majority of people I've talked to about it, they don't feel capable of subjecting themselves to it again. It's not a slam on the movie, if anything, it's amazingly high praise that a movie elicits such a powerful emotional reaction, one so much stronger than many people are comfortable with having, that people avoid watching it again. I've never spoken to someone who's seen it that had anything less than high praise for it.

Movie: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
With all the talk of how quickly Rey picks up force powers, and how there are a couple of moments here and there where she shows frustration at things not working out, I wonder if they'll work that into her story. It might make a nice swerve if the trilogy isn't about the conflict in Ren, but Rey having to fight against how easy it is for her to use these powers, with no training, without understanding that some of the things she (might, conceivably) can do are tainted, or… [more]

The Wire: Port in a Storm
I've always loved the second season. It's not my favorite, but it's pretty close. It might just be the bleakest season ending, too. In other seasons, there are signs of hope, at least for one or two characters here or there. At the end of season 2, nothing has been accomplished, and the main character, the city, has been damaged even further. The docks were, at one point, a vital component of what made the city what it was, and at the end of the season, the docks are that much closer to dead… [more]

WWE Raw: July 21, 2014 (Post-Battleground)
That's what keeps me from watching Raw and just reading the recaps instead. With three hours, and so many people on the roster, there's just so much filler and wasted time instead of decent storylines and compelling motivation. Having one team writing the whole show, week in and out, is just not working, resulting in tired situations and over-reliance on the same gimmick.* Obviously, in the midst of budget cuts and all, they aren't going to suddenly hire more writers, but I feel that's honestly… [more]

Somehow this ended up in a meta about MeFi music. That'll learn me to check tabs...

I love Ziggler the performer, the character, the seller, everything, except his offense. Both he, and to some extent, Cody Rhodes (another masterful seller) to have pretty vanilla offenses with remarkably small move sets. Rhodes has greatly improved, but both guys seem to rely on dropkicks as mainstays of their arsenals, which is like saying a bar has beer. Everyone does dropkicks, or can.… [more]

In either the Cageside Seats or Best and Worst of Raw, there was a beautiful fan version of what Rose should have seen in the mirror, and it was essentially a Leo Kruger promo. The Rose character is just painful at this point. All of the fun that could have been had (fleshing out the Rosebuds, f'r instance, trying to maintain a set character for each member, glossing over the fact that they're played by different people at every stop) is just gone. Eck's Ring Posts was my gateway drug to getting back into wrestling. When he got hired, I figured good things were going to happen, but really, most things have been the same old crap. I imagine it's one of those situations where people get hired, then get ignored while the entrenched team just keeps doing the same old thing.
