Looking for a game to teach about inflation to 10th graders

I'm teaching a unit on inflation to my high school students, and I'd like to find (ideally) or make (less ideal) a game based on teaching the basics of inflation.

Graphic Novels for Teens?

It looks like I'm in the position where I can get my school's library to order a whole bunch of graphic novels for teens and near-native language learners. I have a smattering of ideas (Sandman, Nimona, Persepolis, Lumberjanes), and we have Maus, but not much else. I'd like to get a solid assortment of graphic novels for various reading levels and interests, fiction and non-fiction.

Spinal stenosis, back surgery options, least shitty choice?

YANMD. I have spinal stenosis, and I had an appointment with a surgeon today that I had hope would go a lot better than it did. I'm looking at three choices: do nothing and live with the pain, have a laminectomy that might only provide temporary relief, or a spinal fusion that will probably lead to other fusions as I get older. Looking for people with any experience and/or advice? So much more below the fold.

iPad .cbr reader for comics?

I'm looking for a new .cbr reader for iPad. Willing to pay a little bit to avoid ads in-app, but would love something free that works well, as Comic Zeal seems to be dead/off the App Store.

Country Song ID: Burning houses, but not Cam?

I'm looking for a song I used to hear at work, and I know it involves a female singer, and there's definitely something about burning houses, but I'm almost certain it's not Burning House by Cam, though it might be contemporary?

Classroom Reading Tracking/Book Sharing Software

I'm doing a lot of extensive reading this year, and asking my students (near-native English speaking Japanese 7-10th graders with overseas or international school experience) to read several books this year. I would like to have some way to a) track books students are reading, and b) have a community page of some sort where students can share the books they've read, and their responses to them.

Longshot Google Docs Autocorrect Question

I'm teaching in Japan, and my school is using Google for everything, Classroom, Forms, Sheets. My students submit writing assignments on Docs. It looks like they don't have access to spellcheck. Is this a language setting issue?

Looking for alternative approaches to Facebook Groups

I've been running a Facebook Group for organizing monthly meet ups where people purchase things I make. I'm looking for non-Facebook options for hosting a group that can receive regular updates and essentially replace the utility of the Groups function on Facebook.

Cookbooks for hot sauces?

My pepper crop is coming in, and I've definitely planted too much. I've never made hot sauce, but I figure this is a good time to try it out, but I don't even know where to start.

New iPad, what do I do with it?

I recently bought an 11 inch iPad Pro, and aside from realizing that maybe I don't need something this powerful, I realize that I'm stuck with it, and wondering what's out there that I should be using it for, or what apps are the super awesome must have apps.

Shared Book Review Site for Classroom Use

I'm looking for a website or app that allows students to post short summaries of books. The hope is that the students in the class will use the summaries to find new books to read over the course of the year, and possibly beyond.

Is it supposed to be this salty?

I came across the cheese sauce recipe from Modernist Cuisine that uses sodium citrate to make a creamy sauce. The texture was great, but it was pretty salty. Is there something I can do to fix this?

I've been back at drawing and sketching a bit for the past couple of years, and I'm wondering if I should be looking at a drawing tablet for what I want to be doing, but I've got no idea where to start.

Sending my relief check to family, difficulty level: Overseas resident

It turns out my relief check from the U.S. government has arrived. I live in Japan, and I would rather send it to family back home, as they need it more than I do. Can anyone help me figure this out? Tons of weird complicating details inside.

Fluffy, airy, spreadable pork liver mousse?

I’m making a bunch of fancy stuff for New Years, and I’d really like to make a really nice, smooth pork liver mousse. I’ve had what I’d like to make at French restaurants in the past, where there’s essentially a spoonful of mousse dolloped onto a plate, so it’s fluffy enough to be gently scooped out with a spoon. Any ideas how I get there, and avoid dense, coarse liver spread?

SF Short stories for returnee program?

I'm looking for suggestions for short stories for a returnee English course in a Japanese junior/senior high school. My own personal preference is science fiction, but I'm open to anything.

How concerned should I be about my reaction to a tetanus shot?

I had a workplace incident (kitchen stuff), and as a precaution, the doctor gave me a tetanus shot last Tuesday morning. It's now Saturday morning, and the area around the injection is still swollen and warm to the touch, and damn, it hurts worse than the finger I mangled. A couple of days, sure, but this just seems to be getting worse.

Trying to help a Japanese student apply for American colleges

A student of mine just asked me to help her with applying to American colleges and universities. I'm essentially looking for recommendations for, schools with good musical theater programs, advice and best practices for applying to universities from overseas, and applying for financial aid for non-US students.

No True English Teacher Would Ask This Sort of Question

I've recently discovered that I'm supposed to be teaching logical fallacies and argumentation to a couple classes of second year high school returnee students. I'm looking for solid ideas or examples for use in teaching students how to recognize and avoid using fallacies. However, there've been some snags.

iTunes wouldn't open, deleted it, now can't reinstall

I recently noticed that iTunes on my computer was broken. I tried a couple different things, then I uninstalled it, hoping a fresh install would work. However, the installer sends up an error message, and the install doesn't work. Any ideas?

Help an absolute beginner tweet (for a business)

I've just opened a small restaurant/take out spot in Tokyo, and I've been told that Twitter is a lot more popular here than Facebook among (especially young) Japanese people, and that I should join. So, I did. Now what? Is there a Twitter for Beginners guide? Advice for connecting facebook, twitter, and my sorely unused instagram? Unspoken rules of etiquette?

Vlc on iPad is broken. Alternatives?

It seems the latest update of Vlc for iOS (2.4) has had to cripple ac3 playback because of Dolby and copyright issues. Can anyone point me to a player that will still work?

Need help with fancying up my food

I've been given the opportunity to work out of a kitchen at a restaurant in Tokyo. The chef is letting me use the restaurant to have a tasting event in a couple weeks time, and I'd like some ideas for what to make. I've been doing hamburgers and hotdogs in a pretty low-scale bar, and this new place is a pretty nice restaurant in an upscale area in Tokyo, so I need to step up quite a bit, but still focusing on my hand-made sausages/cured meats, and so on.

Insanely crunchy fried chicken that stays insanely crunchy

Once, I made fried chicken, and it was as close to perfect as I've even made it. The crust nearly shattered when bitten into. It was almost unbearably crispy. I have absolutely no idea how I made it, and never made any notes as to what I did. If anyone out there has found the forbidden secrets of fried chciken, and more importantly, remembers what they did to get there, I would love to hear what you did.

Looking for commercial kitchen supply store, north Chicago burbs

I'm looking for a restaurant supply/commercial kitchen supply store in the northern (near Gurnee) Chicago burbs. I'm setting up a business in Japan, and there are some things (like clothing in my size, certain specialized utensils) that are difficult or expensive to find here. I'm also interested in GFS/non-membership stores that sell bulk spices, if there are any in the area.

Teach me meat science, pretty please

So, my meat business is spinning up. We've registered with the tax office, it's an official thing now. I've got a lot to learn, and a lot of things to figure out. We're going to be making and selling sausages, ham, smoked meats, all manner of things. Primarily we're going to be sending things online, as well as catering and possibly having a food truck to get the name out to drive the online sales. Special monkeywrench: this will all take place in Japan.

More like Macklemore, but instrumental?

So, after FPP after FPP, I decided to check out Macklemore, and I'm suitably impressed. At the same time, going along with the instrumental track on The Heist, I'm realizing that I'd love to listen to an album like Macklemore but, well, without the vocals.

Looking for Books on WW1

I'm finishing up The Guns of August, by Barbara Tuchman, and while it's a really good read, it does what it says, and covers the beginning of the war. I'm interested in other books on WW1. What do you recommend? I'd like to read both a good, solid overview of the whole war, then maybe later read more in-depth books on certain parts or phases of the war.

Is my ham going to be too salty to eat?

I'm brining some pork for ham, but I'm beginning to have some doubts about how long I should be brining them. Should I let them sit for the full time, or should I take them out now, if it's not already too late?
