Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 18
MetaFiler It seems to work far more on the emotional level rather than the intellectual

I sort of trust that Lynch/Frost made deliberate choices about how they wanted the series to wrap up. I won't say that I agree with all those choices, but in the end, the last hour somehow felt like it paid off.

Twin Peaks takes place inside a snow globe depicting an autistic boy holding a snow globe depicting a hospital.

narrative closure feels like it should be the easy part.

I'd like to hear more about this theory of yours, especially how to not have narrative closure feel cheap and easy or unearned or any of the many many other complaints addressed across the generations of narrative criticism.

Emmy eligibility appears to have a May 31st cut-off.

Also why Game Of Thrones wasn't part of this year's Emmys. TP and GoT will likely go against each other next year much to the chagrin of all other series.

Is it literally only two hours, or is it two episodes with 18 being extra long?

Only David knows. And Showtime. And everyone who worked on the project.

But basically, only David knows.

"convenience store"

Yeah, I was disappointed at Hawk's interaction with the Log Lady, too. His reaction felt entirely within his nature, but I was left disappointed by that scene.

I thought the Ed/Norma scene was brilliant from beginning to end. Norma made that decision about the buyout exactly as she was sitting down with BusinessGuy (he's so memorable!) after Ed talked to her. That wasn't what the conversation was going to be about… [more]

Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 14
James Marshall has the same genetics as Larry Mullin Jr, with those sharp cheekbones and the same forehead and nose and COMPLETE INABILITY TO AGE AT ALL OVER THE PAST 25+ YEARS.

Anyway, really interesting episode. A lot happened, but it's all just pieces being moved into place. And a bit of Deus Ex Machina with Green Glove suddenly appearing out of nowhere.

Also, my favorite music performance of the series so far.

Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 13
The way the arm wrestling sequence was filmed, with the crowd around screaming and reacting, looked like something I'd seen in a depression era B-movie before.

Is that what Audrey asks?

might actually be something weird going on there.

Oh, you're new to Twin Peaks! Welcome!

I thought it was the receipt he got from the diner? But that's based on not much.

Yes, there was Laura's face.

The thing about Sarah's television is, well, I've spent two or three days in an alcohol haze and does she even know that it's looping on her? I doubt it. It's just a thing that is on. It's not her choice of viewing with any meaning for her. She doesn't know it's even repeating.

No, he knew he was going to die, so why not confess? He has nothing to gain by keeping his secrets, and obviously his secrets got HIM killed, so why not take revenge on those who set him up by telling all he knows?

He spent 4 years working on this project. I find it hard to believe anything about it happened on the fly.

Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 12
I think mostly that scene was about Audrey getting to use curse words like a sailor because the original show was on network television.

I felt like THAT sequence was an homage to the pinups that seemed to inspire so many of the looks in the original Twin Peaks. It was entirely about the male gaze, and the poses she struck during her time on screen from the moment she appears are all things that one might find in a calendar from the 1940s and 50s.

Lynch is taking his time with this 18 hour movie and is using long parts of it to experiment with various looks and possibilities for "moving… [more]

It is the first one where I skipped forward, specifically over Gordon's ladyfriend's exceedingly slow exit.

Then Lynch has won, because one thing he's always loved doing is creating slow scenes which try to make you look away. The joy of Lynch is that there's often a payoff in some direction or another if you are willing to watch.

We were stunned at how much empathy we felt for Bobby fricking Briggs.

Watching his face melt when he watched Shelley getting all over that guy was truly heartbreaking.

Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 10
I felt like this episode was a perfect reflection of the Season 7 premiere of Game Of Thrones.

It put a lot of pieces in place on the chess board and they all got attention of other factions and they started moving toward each other.

The FBI spotting of Evil Cooper in a photo was interesting. They're pursuing him now.

How many different groups are coming after Doogie now?

MetaFilter: age will do it if nothing else does.

I thought that Cooper sort of took over the body of a pre-existing Dougie and we're seeing him a Cooper because we're watching the story but he looks like someone else entirely to the rest of the world.

Where did I get that impression, and am I wrong?
posted to FanFare by hippybear at 7:32 PM on July 22, 2017
Okay, but where does this "Dougie only came into existence 12 years ago full of false memories" thing come in?

Have I missed a bunch of details?

I'm glad (?) to see that product placement works even in Twin Peaks.
posted to FanFare by hippybear at 10:37 AM on July 15, 2017
But Lynch and Frost have seemingly figured out a way to satisfy the letter of product placement agreements without making the show into an eighteen-hour series of commercials.

I recently watched I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore, which is a great movie and I recommend it highly. But the Coors Light product placement was too aggressive.

Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 8
But honestly, if I had a chance to put together a live band for a performance of what is basically a studio project to appear in a David Lynch project, I'd ask my wife* to be there too, even if it was only holding a tambourine.

*I'm not married, but you get my point

Oh it was a completely different show, alright. completely different from anything ever shown on network TV before.

I might need to find a group to talk to if I'm going to recover.

time feels so distorted and what happened two weeks ago feels like two years and watching the explosion felt like "Ok, this is my life now, I'm just going to watch this forever"

There's no new episode next week so this will help carry you forward.

I still can't figure out what I feel about last night's episode. I applaud you.

I want to call David Lynch, like, tonight or tomorrow and interview him about this episode NOW, since it's been aired and has had a zillion think pieces written about it.

I doubt he'd be forthcoming, but I'd at least like to know what his demeanor is like. I bet he's entirely pleased.

I really don't want to think deeply on that thing that crawled into that girl's mouth. That entire sequence was nightmare fodder for me on the deepest level.

Probably Lynch's point, but still....
