Nobody should be forced to have pie in the face (free thread)

Just a quick mention that seanmpuckett has a link in the MetaFilter Mall, which is one of the links at the top right of the webpage. I can't afford any art at the moment, but the MeFi Mall is an amazing place to do shopping if you have shopping to do.

I was up at 1:30am with a need to shit. And again at 3:00am. And then around 4:30am. And maybe 8:30am, and after that began the vomiting... which was maybe 6 times across the day...

But doctors all tell me all the tests are normal and they can't be imaginative about other tests to run. And yet, this is a life that I'm living, and have been for years.

Why can't I get a physical to get curious about my condition and devote some attention to it? I… [more]

If you like driving techno and other related music, you owe it to yourself to listen to Trent and Atticus' soundtrack for Challengers. It's a real treat from beginning to end. [only the first 15 tracks here are the original album]

Hibbybear could it be Gallbladder?

Every test we've been able to think of comes back normal. Gallbladder function was tested at some point in the past couple of years.

I do have both a physician appointment and a gastrointestinal specialist appointment toward the end of the month, so maybe something can get figured out, or maybe we can think of more tests to run.

I've done enough needles in the past couple of years that I've gone from saying "you'd best lay me down, I might hit the floor" to anyone coming to give me a shot or draw blood to mostly being able to just tell them to be gentle and look away. It's one of the most remarkable positive changes in my life.

I am still not a fan of needles, but not having the thought of one make me feel faint is nice.

How To Live Forever
Thirty-five years of handwritten journal? Surely there would be some sociology or modern anthropology study society/department who would be thrilled to have that?

Alternately, get a pretty good waterproof chest and bury them someplace to be found long in the future. Please don't destroy them!

The world doesn’t need an archive of me any more than it needs all the stuff I used to store in my basement

And yet that is exactly what we crave from ancient Greece, Sumer... written records of everyday life are regarded as having no value but they provide the greatest window into the lives of people.

He's going on tour this summer, so if you want to watch him in person you have the opportunity.

Also, this is from an album he just released that is old songs that he's finally finished, or whatever, and he has an album of entirely new material out in early June.

So, on the Genius page, some of the lyrics are backgrounded or highlighted in a different color. If you click on those lyrics, an explanation of those lyrics will appear to the right on the screen on a desktop. I have no idea what this looks like on mobile, but I assume some kind of pop-up will appear.

It does involve a bit of fiddly clicking, but not too terribly much, and it helps make it clear exactly which lines of the song you're referring to with the explanation being offered.

And just to make things most simple for you, the song is a braggadocio about dealing cocaine. "yay'" is slang for cocaine, so the singer is bragging about how he knows how to sell drugs in good quantities. The song also talks about how the reason he's selling drugs is because his father was arrested when he was seven and so the only way he had to make it in the world was to get into a criminal racket. The song's narrator is very self-confident about his ability to sell but is also… [more]

His dancing style, some of which echoes his "This Is America" choreography, I can't get enough of.

That kind of exaggerated facial expression and dancing I think stems out of the minstrel scene from back in the day. I never know how to react when I encounter it because it is at once very appealing and very very racist.

I'm guessing Godfather's Pizza was supposed to be something close to Chicago deep dish?

I remember being a ravenous teenager and able to eat an entire large godfathers deluxe combo by myself, and still skinny as a rail.

I wonder if the Godfather's in Moses Lake is still open. It was the last one I knew of that was open, only got there once about 15 years ago.

After decades of putting my pizza stone in the middle or middle-top rack position, a recipe for tavern-style pizza told me to put my pizza stone on the rack that is basically against the heating element.

It changed my pizza baking entirely. Not just for tavern-style, which is VERY thin crust OMG, but for any pizza style. In fact, I just leave the stone in the oven all the time, and the oven seems to work better with it in there.

The Low Spark of High Heeled Chairs
I'm really going to have to agree with Czjewel -- the point of high heeled shoes isn't the shape it makes the feet take, it's the shape it makes the calf and ass look. Focussing so strictly on the feet while missing the calves entirely feels like they didn't think things all the way through?

Maybe they made some with calves and they looked bad. I have no idea.

It's a clever project though!

Another layer of mediation to an already loopy transmission
The dosing differential between LSD and speed would make it basically impossible to cut speed into the LSD without increasing the volume of what you're taking in to some ridiculous amount.

LSD is measured out in micrograms. Speed is consumed in much larger quantities.

I do miss having access to actual quality LSD. I wouldn't take anything out there anymore because the sources have changed so much in the 20-odd years since mine got busted.

The Car You Never Expected (to disappear)
As a driver of a Hyundai Accent, I have to say the size of most vehicles on the road is pretty terrifying. And I say that also as someone who drove a Chevy Express Van or Chevy Express Box Truck for work for 20 years. Even in those larger vehicles, the size of other vehicles was astonishing.

I don't understand the need to have a passenger vehicle that seats at least five also be a large hauling vehicle with a full length truck bed. People don't know how to park them,… [more]

In my teenage years in the Eighties, we had a Ford Courier pickup truck. Honestly it was the most useful thing ever. It was tiny, it got great gas milage, it could hold three people and had a full pickup bed... If they built something like that again, I might buy one! Make it electric with all that torque!

If it's only foreign car companies going to be making sedans anymore... I assume the Civic is going to survive? And I don't think the Hyundai line of sedans is going anywhere. Volkswagen? No clue. Who else is making sedans? Suzuki folded a while ago...

oh, Audi? Mercedes but that's a luxury brand... anyway. We need to make small cars again. They're better for everyone as long as we have to have cars.

Biden's moves are strictly protectionist, as China was about to dump cheap cars onto the US market, cheaper than our own industry could produce them for. Doubling their price means that US made product will be able to find a market that could have become dominated by China before it even had a chance to get truly started.

The Chevy Bolts produced at GM’s Kansas plant will be bigger than the previous Bolt model, which was retired last year.

But... this is how car models have always worked. You start off with a small car and a medium sized car as a new auto maker. You build those until you can iterate and then the small car becomes slightly larger and the medium car becomes slightly larger. You do this maybe 3 times and then your medium car has become renamed as a big… [more]

The Last of New York City's Original Artist Lofts
I'm sorry, this comment doesn't engage with the content at all, which I promise I will get to this evening...

Actually doing a quality television production filming of a musical is STUPIDLY expensive. Filming Hamilton cost $10million. And it involved not just running through the show and filming a performance, but there were a lot of stops and reshoots and it took a long time to shoot. If you think about the golden age of Sondheim musicals being filmed on stage, we got quite a few... those could basically not happen today with how expensive it would be.

Now... why Broadway… [more]

Improve Your Sandwiches
I do want to speak out about restaurants that are serving "rueben" sandwiches that are not pressed and grilled.

I understand that a corned beef sandwich on rye with dressing and sauerkraut and swiss cheese is a nice thing to eat, BUT IT ISN'T A FUCKING RUEBEN!!!!

I will take a few deep breaths now.
posted to MetaFilter by hippybear at 4:27 PM on May 14, 2024
And pressing? Like I didn't know this was a good sandwich construction method.

I will have to experiment with this muchly.

I know my comment above was about ruebens that need to be pressed and grilled...

but a cold sandwich that you've wrapped and pressed???

OMG I have a deep need to experiment with this. I think there are sandwiches that I regularly love that could become transcendent if wrapped and pressed.

Avocados are the wrong texture without enough flavor for my deviated-septum-crippled sense of taste, and kimchi has a thing about it that makes me want to vomit. I'm not happy about either of these situations, because I'm sure there is delicious food hiding behind them unavailable to me.

I am, however, a sandwich lover. I'm surprised there wasn't more addressing of... well, dressing.

CATSTRAVAGANZA
Where I was working in the mid-2000s, one woman had all these things on her desktop... extra toolbars, stupid stuff... she also had downloaded one of those free cursor sparkler-trail things, like fairy dust trailing behind your pointer.

Turned out it was a trojan full of malware and the company had their systems raided a couple of times before they figured out what was doing it.

Anyway, this doesn't look like it's that. It's cute!
