"That Summer" Official trailer
That's a ... pretty deep cut. Here is the Grey Gardens doc.

watching "Grey Gardens" is like being inside a late-era J.D. Salinger story.

This is fascinating, and rather extraordinary that it's the first time this has been documented. I mean, where do we think "traditional medicine" came from, anyway?

The Battle for Attention
In a sense, it is bizarre that estar(ser)—an acronym that, being two forms of the Spanish “to be,” is largely un-Googleable—has become the Order’s public front, mounting lectures and exhibitions across the country.

Lol. Birds aren't real.

I googled estar(ser) and the Third Bird Site is in the top 20 results.

Also, they don't print (very many) pictures. So they have to describe things. Including people.

this is, I think, the offending paragraph:

As an academic at the lectern, Burnett cut a curious figure. He was tall, with a graying backpacker’s beard and light-brown hair pulled into a topknot. He wore sixteen silver rings, gunmetal nail polish, and an outfit—T-shirt, V-neck sweater-vest, climbing pants—entirely in shades of light gray. He… [more]

We Need to Rewild the Internet
Every time I read something on this theme (and this one is a very good exemplar!) I think of that Billy Joel song, "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," specifically these lines near the end:

They lived for a while in a
Very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter
Of course
And they parted the closest
Of friends
Then the king and the queen went
Back to the green
But you can never go back
There again

Hardly the attitude of the next poet laureate
Maybe the best comparison for me in my own musical pantheon for Taylor would be Melissa Etheridge, who also writes songs about relationships and is generally musically same-ish.

Just for the record:

ETHERIDGE: It was probably 15 years ago when I first met [Taylor Swift]. She was just starting out. That’s when she told me that she came to see me in Reading, Pennsylvania when she was 11 years old and wanted to play guitar.… [more]

How Taylor Swift Writes About Being Taylor Swift [The Ringer]

In Tortured Poets, Swift likewise asks a lot of her audience. The album begs a close read and rewards fourth, fifth, sixth, and 16th listens. Many songs have third verses, unusual for pop tune packaging. The double album runs over an Easter egg–packed two hours. Swift has more than enough fans who want to do this homework—and who feel rewarded by the excavation—to set streaming record after record.… [more]

The end of "the end of passwords"?
For Android users using fingerprint/face unlock, you can quickly and temporarily disable biometric login at ANY time by long-pressing the power key and touching the "Lockdown" icon, after which your next login will require the passcode.

fortunately, my Android phone erratically and randomly and at least once every fucking day will tell me it needs me to enter my slightly complicated password to unlock instead of just opening with biometrics… [more]

The Portugal Model for Addressing the Overdose Crisis
The "Portugal Model" has come under fire of late, mainly because the initial enthusiasm and almost instant, largely persistent results have started to fade over time (20 years!) and now there are new & different drugs, new & different users and new & different dynamics. But there is anecdotal as well as hard evidence that the mix of non-aggressive policing, decriminalization & community care as described in the FPP dramatically reduced the number of chronic users and… [more]

Grace Cummings
Her voice is really interesting. At my first listen (watching the "Heaven" video) it sounded masculine and felt like she was lipsynching to a man singing. But then the voice got to me and it felt like I mentally shifted and it all clicked and now the voice is just ... hers.

Lovely stuff.

How social networks prey on our longing to be known
The Man Who Trapped Us In Databases [via this kliuless post and also mentioned in this FPP] is an excerpt from McKenzie Funk's The Hank Show which is an eye-opening & nerve-wracking book about exactly how governments and corporations have been collecting and (ab)using personal information [financial, medical, commercial, intimate &c &c] since not long after the dawn of computing.

This shouldn't undermine mine Maarten's point about being extremely careful… [more]
