A Message from Big Book
Note: I am old. I still travel with a book no matter where I'm going because I fear having nothing to read.

Are you me? I often take Charles Portis' The Dog of the South with me when traveling, because even though I have read it a hundred times every time I read it it's like it's the first time, and that book just weirdly calms me down.

1.5m-long goanna winched by crane to safety out of weir
There are a lot of excellent reasons to celebrate the posts of chariots pulled by cassowaries but for me the best bit is I always learn of the existence in the world of some animal I've never heard of! Goannas! Numbats!

I made one too.

I miss making mixtapes too. I made many many in the 80s & early 90s. CDs killed that. Tried with Spotify et. al. but it just ain't the same. This ain't either, but it's fun.

Not yet, but I did read the "prequel," Moneyland and it is very good. HIghly recommended.

This will be either really good for watching porn, or really terrible. That this primary driver of tech uptake isn't even mentioned in this article (or the WaPo one about data privacy) is ... interesting.

A reminder of the relative silence of our material lives today
Eventually I hacked into the server and installed a script which gradually turned the volume down as the day progressed. Nobody noticed.

Brilliant. When I was a kid my parents would play classical music at high volume and I would turn it down a notch each time I walked by until it was gone. Did that with "The Prairie Home Companion" too, no one ever noticed.

How to Comment on Social Media by Rebecca Solnit
the best one:

Finally if the post is about something O.P. cares about, remember that you’ve cared about it longer, deeper, harder than they have, and that even someone’s care can be a basis for your triumph, along with condemning them for all those other things they evidently do not care about.

Update, the Portuguese media is reporting that Bobi has not been "stripped of his title" but that the nomination process for new candidates has been suspended while they assess the process. That is to say, he may yet be stripped of the title, but so far has not. And since new candidates are not being accepted, Bobi's record may stand for a long time. [Bobi's person blames the kerfuffle on "big processed dog food," saying in part Bobi lived so long because he never ate that… [more]
