Help me find this novel from the 1990s

It's a UK novel, probably published in late 1980s or early 1990s, with a title like "Exquisite Monsters" or "Beautiful Monsters" or "Exquisite Beasts" and it's about a strange family, intermingled with the Atomic Age and weird science.

Where to find this knife?

Any ideas on where I might find a kitchen knife like this one, as seen in Jamie Oliver's preparation of Store Cupboard Fried Rice from Keep Cooking & Carry On? (I am more interested in knives with a blunted nose like this one than its fancy handle, as it were).

Help Me Find a Book

In the late 1980s I read a novel about a wacky young filmmaker. It was a faux biography, absurd and funny and weird. One scene I remember vividly was that as a child this filmmaker caught a reel of film on his foreskin, creating (painful, bloody) havoc. The title I believe has the word "Shark" in it. Something like "The Shark Tales" or "The Shark Fin Tales." I was in the UK when I read this book, the author was probably English but I can't be sure of that. And of course I can't remember the title or author; anyone have any ideas?

"Hemingway" quote check

Lately people around me have been quoting Ernest Hemingway, from "A Farewell to Arms", saying:

Adonit Pro First Gen Pen

I have an Adonit Jot Pro Stylus (on this page as the "previous generation" stylus, the gray one on the right) that I bought years ago to use with my first iPad. Was probably in 2013. I found it in a drawer recently and it doesn't work with my current iPad (a Mini 2 from 2015) or on any smartphone I've tried (iPhones & Samsungs). My question is: what changed? Why doesn't this tech work? Or am I missing something?

Comics _ DC _ Christmas _ Short ... help!

I am seeking a comic book that includes a short tale of a woman in a car that won't start getting increasingly panicky as a shadowy figure approaches. It turns out to be a policeman who gives the car a push and gets her on her way. I am pretty certain this was in a collection of Christmas-themed stories published by DC in the 1980s, but it isn't the Super Star Holiday Special (April 1980). Any ideas?

Nespresso Steel Capsules?

I have seen ads for refillable stainless steel capsules that are compatible with Nespresso coffee machines. This question was asked but not really answered last year. I am wondering if anyone has used these, and whether they really worked, and didn't damage the coffee machine. And if there is a recommended brand or retailer. Thanks!

Help Me Find A Book

I am looking for a book that was published in the late 1980s. I cannot remember the title or the author, only that it is a memoir, and that the cover of the book (oft advertised in the New Yorker) had a small picture of a boy jumping between two rocks. The design of the cover was very much like this one for Lewis Thomas' The Fragile Species, with the picture of the jumping boy there in the center. The only other thing I can remember is that the author's name started with two initials, i.e. T R Something or A R Something. Please help!

Firewire to USB

While reading the iPod anniversary post, I remembered that I had a 2nd-gen iPod tucked away. It only has a Firewire port. My Macbook is long retired. If I buy a Firewire to USB adapter, will I be able to use the iPod as a hard disk? (And get the music files off it?) Will it charge the iPod? What is the best adapter (or brand) to buy?

What's the best e-book reader for iPad2?

So last night I upgraded my iPad2 to iOS5 and discovered that my favorite e-book reader app, Stanza, doesn't work anymore. The ´net seems to think it will no longer be developed, so now I need to find a new reader. Dropbox connection is essential. I have (just now) settled on Bluefire, which is OK but laggy compared to Stanza. Any better suggestions for e-book reader apps for iPad2?

Dutch Schultz's Last Words

Dutch Schultz's last words are famous for many reasons, not the least of which is for inspiring William S Burroughs. They were transcribed by a stenographer of the New Jersey Police, FJ Lang. Does anyone know where you could see a facsimile or images of the stenographer's report? (Preferably online...)

I Can't Go On. I'll Go On.

A person recently mentioned, as an aside, a Samuel Beckett essay (or play, or story) featuring the "Trade Union", which was described as the thing that conspires against ordinary individuals in the quotidian (i.e. when you forget to take your umbrella and it rains, that's the fault of the "Trade Union"; or when you can't find your car keys, that's down to the "Trade Union".)

Help me find 1980s-era political image?

I vaguely remember an editorial cartoon or maybe a Doonesbury Sunday strip or maybe even a political ad that used a childlike crayon drawing of a missile hitting a magical bubble-like shield to illustrate the ridiculousness of Ronald Reagan's dream of the "Star Wars" Strategic Defense Initiative. It might have been a short animated film. But I cannot find this 1980s-era image online; can you?

Do you recognize this short story?

Prompted by the recent Harlan Ellison thread I was reminded of a short story which I think was his in which a depressed and suicidal man freaks out an armed carjacker by threatening to kill him in an accident and leaves him trembling on the median. It was called something like "The More Dangerous Weapon". Google-fu is getting me to nowheresville. Can anyone help? Maybe it's not Ellison...

G-mail recovery

A friend of mine recently had his g-mail account broken into. Someone got in an started sending out bcc e-mails to all the contacts saying he had been mugged in a foreign land and needed cash. The conversation was clearly 419 language and clearly not my friend, so there was no damage. Is there anything that can be done to recover the g-mail address? Any way to contact Google about it and make the case? Obviously just creating a new g-mail address and starting over is the obvious answer, but I am wondering if there is a process for recovering a g-mail identity that's demonstrably "yours".

Seeking flood image

Help me, hive mind. I vaguely recall an image (in Time Magazine, perhaps) of a man wading in waist-deep water holding a sign that said "Leadership please." I think it was from the Hurricane Katrina disaster but I'm not entirely sure. Have looked and looked online to no avail. Can anyone help?

Anyone remember this robot flick?

I'm trying to find the name of or clips from an animated film that I saw on HBO or Showtime in the mid-1980s. It was about a robot who was looking for its mother. Some of the other robots said "One! One! One!" a lot. And there was a dumb joke in the middle: "Did you hear the one about the fire in the circus? The heat was intense!" Can anyone help?
