Story-filter: Non elected ways for a layperson to become a judge
What time period? Some rules have changed over time in some jurisdictions as to what qualifications are required in a judiciary candidate.

"half-remembered and half-created, neither real nor ideal"
[A reminder to my fellow commenters:

This story is fiction, not an essay or memoir. Please keep that in mind while commenting; I write this because sometimes it's easy to slide into forgetting that, when an author writes a story this relatable, addressing hot political topics, in which some characters act imperfectly. I would like to make room for the probability that the author, while describing one particular set of characters grappling with a set of political issues,… [more]

The author has specifically said:

"my favorite story I’ve ever written & also my most trans is out..... It’s about wanting history to affirm us & what happens when history refuses.

alternately: it’s about trying to crack Mary Renault’s egg & she says no"

and:

"someday I'll write a story about a trans guy who is not a sad little sack. today is not this day"

Taskmaster: Season 17 (Full Season)
I love John's drive for excellence as well as how he plays with Alex using a yes-and Taskmaster fan approach, like creating another task card.

I agree that it would be a completely different show if everyone had the same approach, whether that approach was "clown" or "compete" or "faff about," and that it's pleasing to have the contrast!

I think it's interesting how much the show's executives and staff have to juggle, to simultaneously trade off the 3 levels of (1) making an entertaining TV show, (2) running and maintaining a workable system of games, and (3) taking adequate care… [more]

You're using assessment words like "is"/"aren't" more than you're talking about your own subjective preferences, and I think you and I will simply have to agree to disagree about things like whether John's performance is endearing (I find it endearing and you don't) and whether it's fun to watch someone figure out something like an answer being written on the wall behind the contestants (you don't like it, I do).

Similarly, the derogatory slang term… [more]

I enjoy John's performances, usually, umbrella, but I found his mannequin dance uninspiring. And I thought Greg ought to have given Sophie a much higher score for her beatboxing were-woman. Immediately after watching, I scrolled down to the YouTube comments to find where umbrella folks would be complaining of the injustice!

The Nick and Steve watermelon-on-table team task was AMAZING. And yeah, pwnguin, I agree, I think their multitasking caused them to fail to… [more]

alternative techniques for conveying story background information
Jon Bois (previously on MeFi) makes a lot of narrative videos that use visuals of charts and maps to increase the sheer amount of information he can give the reader. 17776 and its sequel 20020 are multimedia science fiction pieces that use animated maps and charts, fictional sports trading cards, interviews, chat transcripts, and more to aid exposition.

Some MeFites may not know that we have a kind of similar thing: the MeFi Mall where (for free) MetaFilter members can link to things we make and sell online. Just text and links (no graphics). We have often promoted it toward the end of the calendar year, when many users are shopping for gifts, but it's available year-round. More in MetaTalk.

By the way, logged-in Cohost users can also read ads within Artist Alley that are marked for people 18 years old or older (such as things involving nudity), and can filter whether we want to read them or not. (Cohost community guidelines, ad guidelines.) I think non-registered users can't access those ads.

The short story "Sunlight" by Shauna Gordon-McKeon. (Direct link to story hosted on Medium.) I believe the author thinks this would be a better world - caution that at least one reader (per MeFi comments) thought it dystopic!

If you can find Fiona Jones to ask her more about her inspirations for the story, I do hope you will do so and report back here! I have been having trouble finding contact information for her (especially as there is at least one other writer with that name) and hope she sets up a website soon. Maybe I'll ping the Clarion Foundation workshop folks, if only to get word to her that people here are enjoying the story.

I find the rhetorical form of this checklist template intriguing.

Movies with very competent protagonists - difficulty level: no violence.
As I understand it, you're seeking soothing (personal/local stakes, low suspense) fictional movies or TV series starring protagonists who consistently demonstrate amazing competence.

I second the recommendation that you look into anime TV series where people make stuff or travel. And more generally, film/TV from outside the US, and/or film that was not intended to make big bucks via US theatrical distribution, is more likely to be willing to be low-key the way you want.… [more]
