Oh, huh, I guess I do post a lot about that
I was meandering among the tags on one of my past front page posts, and noticed that "inspirational" said:
Users that often use this tag: brainwaneOther MeFites who make front page posts: are you ever surprised to notice a theme emerging among your posts? Like, "Oh, huh, I guess I do post a lot about that"? I'm curious!
What The MeFi BIPOC Board Does
MetaFilter’s Global BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) Advisory Board wants to share some context and plans with MetaFilter at large. This text is drawn from a conversation the BIPOC Board had with MetaFilter’s newly-elected Steering Committee in September 2022.
Extremely optional potato whimsy
Without any particular planning, some folks (myself included) have had a good time making and commenting on front page posts about potatoes in the last few days. There's no particular reason, no official theme week or anything like that; I saw several people commenting "what's going on?" or "is this a theme week?" so this is your reassurance that you didn't miss an announcement or something. It's just snowballed organically. If you're enjoying it, have fun! If you don't love the fad, please do feel free to post other stuff as usual. Probably the potato harvest season will end in a few days or weeks.
Paperwork & Bodywork: short virtual anti-procrastination calls
Is there paperwork or light exercise you've been putting off? Would mild peer pressure from other MeFites help you get started? Join or start a short call! As a followup to recent FPPs on fitness, on Hybrid Calisthenics, and on accountability and body doubling, I'm setting up several IRL (but actually online) events May 10th-14th. And I'd love copycats.
How MeFi (and other providers) deal with trust & safety issues
MetaFilter and several other online service providers responded to a survey about how they prevent and respond to harmful content. A new research paper analyzes those trust and safety techniques: "These findings have implications for policy debates over the regulation of online service providers’ anti-abuse obligations and their use of end-to-end encryption." It's research and it's written in academic language but I figured that it would make sense to mention it here since it's a published paper that analyzes MeFi. See the appendix for some quotes from MetaFilter management.
Disability/ableism thread: access intimacy, taking care of each other
Like previous MeTas, this thread is a space for people affected by ableism to converse, about experiences on and off the site. We're trying to make this a space relatively free of pressure from people who AREN'T hurt by ableism. You get to decide whether ableism affects you. This thread is for everyone to read and for disabled people to (mostly) participate in.
