75 years on four wheels and an umbrella

7 October, 1948: French automaker Citroën unveils a strange little car intended for rural farmers. Built to be cheap to buy, reliable, rugged, and easily maintained, its design spec was that it could carry up to four people wearing clogs and hats and 50kg of farm goods at speeds of at least 50kph, and be able to carry a basket of eggs across a plowed field without breaking any. 75 years later, the Citroën 2CV remains an enduring emblem of French culture and engineering.

What was the funniest movie you ever saw when you were a kid?

Not asking what you think the funniest movies are, or what you consider the funniest movie for kids now that you're an adult who has seen All The Movies. But when you were an actual kid (say age 7-12), what was that one movie that made you laugh the most?

Help me find a vintage baseball cap website

A few months or a year ago I found a website that specialized in selling baseball caps (and I think maybe jerseys as well) that were high quality reproductions of negro league and old minor league teams with cool logos/history. Now I'm having trouble tracking it down...

Everybody Has a Box

Santore does not shy away from these questions: He has the word temptation tattooed on his right forearm. It’s a reminder, he told me. “What do safecrackers do?” he once asked. “They crack safes. It’d be better if they do it legally, but the game is the fucking game. I’m just saying, it takes a certain mindset to want to do this stuff, to have the patience for it, and some people can channel that in a positive way and other people fucking can’t.” Meet the Safecracker of Last Resort

What are some good additions/modifications to a vegan kimchi recipe?

I am going to be making some batches of the Serious Eats kimchi recipe. Any ideas of ways I can mix it up, or different kimchi recipes to try? The only limitation is the recipe has to be vegetarian. Please let me know what to add/change/remove, and any changes to the prep. Thanks!

List last update: 17/11/1995

I'm looking for webpages from the dawn of the World Wide Web (i.e. 1991-1998) which compile lists of URLs, mailing list addresses, newsgroups, etc., still standing and not updated for over 20 years, such as Mike's List.

understanding ideation

Is it possible to have suicidal ideation without actually being considered suicidal? I'm asking for my mid-1980s junior high self. I never took any action towards self-harm, but I spent a lot of time fantasizing how "they'd miss me if I was gone." (Don't worry, I've had plenty of therapy in the decades since and feel thankful for where I am in life.)

Ya smell that? Somethin’ stupid’s about ta happen!

"A few years back, I worked for a small, questionably honest used car dealership and repair shop. I'm a service writer, which means I'm the interface between customers (who are idiots) and the technicians (who are mostly felons). Think Tom Smykowski from Office Space. I will warn you ahead of time, I am not the hero of my stories, just the protagonist. There are no heroes in the car industry - we are all villains in our own ways." u/36055512 regales r/talesfromtechsupport with stories about Dishonest Used Car Dealership.

Your best vegan loaf recipe

Looking for a great recipe for a vegan meat loaf. Not looking for your awesome Google skills. Please — only recipes you've personally tried and loved and only recipes that are vegan — unless you've made it vegan and it's still turned out great. Online and cookbook recipes are fine — I can get most vegan cookbooks at the library. Looking for something that is good hot or cold and holds together for sandwiches. No vegan fake foods (yogurt, cheese, Earth Balance). Low or no oil a plus, but great taste a necessity. Thanks!

Songs with factual errors in them?

Toto's "Africa" refers to Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the Serengeti, but the mountain isn't actually in that geographic area. Chicago's song "Saturday in the Park" has a line that's supposed to be someone singing in Italian, but it's actually made-up Italian-sounding gibberish. What other songs have factual mistakes and errors in them?

Bean Freaks

Fifteen years ago, when Sando founded Rancho Gordo, he had no food-retailing or farming experience. Now he’s the country’s largest retailer of heirloom beans and a minor celebrity in the culinary world. He’s a side dish who’s become a staple. "The Hunt for Mexico’s Heirloom Beans: Rare varieties discovered by Rancho Gordo’s Steve Sando have turned the humble legume into a gourmet food," by Burkhard Bilger.

Thank you.

It's been a rather crappy past decade for me.. Wife passed away in '09 as y'all well know, diagnosed with T2 diabetes and stage 4 kidney cancer last June, surgery to remove a kidney and tumor last September, and ongoing chemo to reduce the metastasis in my lungs, and I'll eventually need surgery to rebuild my left shoulder due to a bone lesion. Through all this - y'all have been the most kind, caring, considering, and just gently awesome folks I could ever as for. Even when I'm having a really crappy day, I end up reading something on here, or talking to a MeFite on twitter (I'm @mrbill) that just makes me smile and cheer up a bit. So, in short, I'm all schmoopy right now.. thank you. Thank you Matt, Cortex, Jessamyn, and all y'all.

I hate cooking. I now have to deal with vegan potluck.

Please tell me what, if anything, I can find at a Trader Joe's that's standardized vegan that I can just buy and reheat or whatever without having to cook it myself and/or nitpick the crap out of the ingredients to make sure they're absolutely 100% animal free.

If you killed somebody, how would you dispose of the body without getting caught?

Suppose you killed somebody...

How would you dispose of the body without getting caught? Would you dump it somewhere? Bury it in the backyard or basement? Dissolve it in lime? What? What would your master plan be that would allow you to get away with it?

And no, I haven't killed anybody and I'm not planning to - I was just curious.

Best vegan entrees good at room temperature

I'm going to a barbecue, and I expect to be the only vegan there. When I google vegan potlucks, most of the entrees I find seem like they're best served warm. I want to bring something that will be good at room temperature and (a) will give me something to eat, (b) will taste good to omnivores, and (c) is not super labor intensive. Also, I really don't want to draw attention to my diet. Further picky details below.

Food in Vegas, Veggie edition

We won't have a rental car, so probably most things we'd do would be on the strip. Neither of us have been to Vegas in years, and understand the dining options have evolved quite a bit from the all-you-can-eat buffets I remember. We eat very little meat. What vegetarian/pescatarian restaurants or meals shouldn't we miss? I did see these two previouslys, but figured restaurants change quickly.

I want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle

Bikepedia contains detailed bicycle specifications dating back to 1993, for all your bicycle building and selecting purposes. The site also has a broader catalog of related gear, and a stolen bike registry. But if you want a ton of information about bikes, which parts to pick and how to maintain them, Sheldon Brown's (memorial*) website is still a key resource, and it's being updated all the time.

Who Are the Successful, Nice, CEOs Out There?

Alan Mulally became famous for turning around Ford from the brink of bankruptcy without having to become an ax-man to do it. I am looking for examples of other leaders (CEOs, world leaders, ect.) out there who proved that being successful in business doesn't necessarily mean having to be a jerk. I am going to be doing a research paper on the similarities and differences of each leader's approach.

Here’s What Happened When We Tried To Play Moneyball Without Any Money

In the summer of 2015, FiveThirtyEight's Ben Lindbergh and Sam Miller, the editor in chief of Baseball Prospectus, took over the baseball operations department of an independent-league team in California, the Sonoma Stompers, putting their sabermetric beliefs to the test with actual professional players. As spring training approached, they compensated for their lack of connections, tight budget and even tighter time frame by using statistics to scour the country for overlooked talent. "If the [Moneyball] A’s were 'a collection of misfit toys,' as Michael Lewis wrote, then we’ll be building a team out of toys that got recalled because they were choke hazards."

Looking for great reading on "2001: A Space Odyssey"

I'm looking for recommendations for great reading material on "2001: A Space Odyssey" (the movie, not the novel or source story). I could go through and read all the reviews, but are there any particularly noteworthy pieces (magazine, Web, newspaper) or books out there that I can't miss? Interesting theories or discussions? Other non-reading media would be of interest as well. Thanks in advance.
