Ask MeFi post: How long do you keep text messages?
I have had an iPhone since the first or second generation, and I have never deleted a text message. I just....can't be bothered. I'm lucky enough to have the means to pay Apple a few bucks a month for extra iCloud storage to not think about this particular aspect of my digital life. I am also extremely boring and most of my texts are also boring.

Ask MeFi post: Sperm bank for trans MTF youth...exeriences or advice to share?
I, like many (most?) people who wanted biological children as adults, had virtually no thoughts on this as a 15 year old. If she banks and then does not want or is not in a position to have biological children, there would be a financial loss, but I don't see any other negative consequences. If she does not bank and does want biological children, that would be a real loss, and she could conceivably even, as an adult, resent that you didn't push her to preserve the option when she was a child.

Ask MeFi post: Sperm bank for trans MTF youth...exeriences or advice to share?
I'm a cis woman who has never wanted children. The only time in my life that I ever thought I wanted kids was briefly in my early 20s when I was having trouble with my hormonal birth control and had to keep switching up brands and dosages, and I was situationally depressed on top of that so my mental health was no bueno. Crying at baby food commercials and such. Then within a few months I got back to normal and went back to never wanting kids.

I have zero experience... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to get supplemental dental insurance in California
Anyone have any advice?

Go to the dentist you like and ask if they'll do the work you need done for the cash price equivalent to what a Delta Dental PPO patient would pay with reimbursement taken into account. I give you very high odds they will immediately take that offer. You may even be able to push the negotiated price to somewhat below what a Delta Dental PPO patient would pay.

Dental insurance isn't really insurance. It's... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Implications of Google AI for SEO?
The best she can do right now is publish accurate, helpful, and original content, and position herself as a subject-matter expert in her field. If applicable, she'll want her credentials featured prominently on the "about" page and in her author bio on articles. Google takes medical claims seriously (or at least they claim to) so it should be obvious to readers and Google's algorithm that she's a medical professional. As JZig mentioned, local SEO (i.e., location-specific articles) and... [more]

Ask MeFi post: hybrid car kept outdoors - will battery need replacement sooner?
Our 12-year-old hybrid spent the first half of its life in hot-summer conditions and the second half in cold-winter conditions and we haven't had a battery issue yet. Looking at this Reddit thread for anecdata, it doesn't seem like anyone has any data about failure tied to conditions, it looks like they tend to last 10+ years in general.

Honestly I think the problem is that the batteries... last a very long time. Much longer than originally thought when hybrids first... [more]

Ask MeFi post: 12 year old boy taking divorce hard
I mean, it's been three days, an amount of time one could still count in hours. Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but I'm hoping that you are not expecting a child to be able to easily take this information in, process it fully, and be ok any time soon. You've just given him information that has upended his whole concept of what his family is, and introduced a level of insecurity that I'm guessing he's never known until now. He probably doesn't understand his own levels of sadness at this point.... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Should we name our son Camille?
You can search on this chart the use of Camille for boys and girls in the US. It’s always been used far more for girls, even when it was sometimes used for boys.

In the US, this is a girl’s name. You’re going to make your son’s life just a little bit harder if you choose this name.

I would have absolutely not qualms about filling in the declaration as "decorative item, mirror: 30eur".

Unless you're a professional artist then it is entirely normal for arts and crafts to end up worth less than the cost of the materials. How are you objectively valuing this item? Go into any goodwill any you'll find plenty of canvases with $20 worth of paint on them being sold for $1 so someone can paint over them.

Ask MeFi post: Why are washers called washers?
It's worth bearing in mind that nuts and bolts in their modern, ubiquitous form are a much more recent phenomenon than the words we use for them.

There are examples of threaded nuts and bolts going back several hundred years, but for most of that time, they were things that had to be painstakingly hand made, with each nut being unique to the bolt it was made for -- so they were neither cheap nor common items, and not used anywhere where they would... I don't see why a hardware nuts would have metaphorical connection to food nuts.

I think it's likely through the meaning of nut as a small bit of something, which the OED traces back further than the hardware meaning (they say "a small knob of butter, meat, etc.").

Ask MeFi post: Science of SodaStream vs. soda siphons?
I think it is mostly that the Sodastream injects carbon dioxide directly into the water, while the siphon adds carbon dioxide into the air space. It's not so much that carbon dioxide is diluted by the air, but simply that the interface between the carbon dioxide is fixed in a siphon (it's the surface of the water, unless you shake it), while the interface is large and variable in the Sodastream (small bubbles of carbon dioxide are released and then travel through the water, resulting in a large... You say it’s clear to everyone that these are your spots - but is there *signage* saying that they are your spots? One of the things about informal rules and norms is that they can be problematic by expecting people to conform to unclear rules that they do not understand; this can be especially difficult for people with certain forms of neurodivergence.

THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT ‘CLEARING THE AIR’ WILL SOLVE. This woman has heard you loud and clear, this is not “a miscommunication,” she is just deliberately ignoring your demands.
