International standard cookbooks?

When a friend online noticed Joy of Cooking referred to as "one of America's standard cookbooks" and wondered about internationally analogous "standard cookbooks," I immediately thought, "What a great question for AskMe!" And here we are.

I think that making people laugh is good enough for me.

Mike Krahulik (Gabe) and Jerry Holkins (Tycho) of Penny Arcade now have their own reality TV show. The first episode of PATV explores the unlikely rise of their video game media empire and covers the recent Penny Arcade Expo and the birth of Jerry's daughter.

I Will Not Even Attempt to Make a "They Might Be Giants" MetaPun In This Title

When Jonathan Coulton scheduled his October 10th show at Chicago's Park West, he didn't know that fellow nerd-rockers They Might Be Giants were playing on the same day, at the same time, in the nearby Vic Theater. Not only that, the Giants were performing their hit 1990 album Flood in its entirety. In a tongue-in-cheek effort to make sure somebody showed up for his performace, Coulton, along with Paul and Storm, decided to perform their own take on Flood. Hightlights included absolutely no accordion ("that's a selling point"). In nine parts on YouTube. Audio recorded directly from the venue's soundboard.

The Academy Produces More PhDs than the Academy Needs, and That's Just the Way the Academy Likes It

Average time to an MBA: 2 years. Time to a law degree: 3 years. To an MD: 4 years. Average time to a humanities PhD? 11.3 years. Then there's only a 50% chance you'll get a job somewhat related to your field--and odds drop to a 25% chance that you'll ever become a tenured professor. The life of the Academy and its myriad institutional problems, from Harvard magazine.

PS3 has turned so ugly

PlayStation 3 firmware update 3.0 is truly a pile. Font size is ginormous on my 42" LCD (akin to going from 1024x768 to 640x480), icons are shilling for the PlayStation Network in every menu and there's a hideous update bar in the upper right-hand corner I can't figure out how to turn off. I wish I hadn't taken the plunge -- if you haven't, don't do it! Does anyone have solutions to mitigate this nightmare, which has turned the menus of my console and home theatre box into a janky-looking POS?

The Loss of Human Scale: Old Hong Kong vs New Hong Kong

For the last two years, Flickr user HK Man has been collecting old photos of Hong Kong, finding the exact spots at which they were taken, and taking them again. The result, from his first photo of Victoria Harbor to a more recent one of Nathan Road, comprises a chronicle of Hong Kong's unrestrained vertical development over the past few decades. In a similar vein, Gwulo is a community site for "for everyone that is interested in old Hong Kong" and includes photos, mysteries, and discussions -- such as this one about old Kai Tak Airport.

Queries from the hive mind

I was experimenting with Google's search suggestions feature when I noticed that it gave some interesting results for "metafilter + [letter]". Since it returns the most popular search terms starting with that phrase, what you get for each letter is an A-Z listing of the most sought-after topics related to Metafilter. So without further ado, I give you... Metafilter A to Z.

Ten years ago today, Mark Sandman died on stage during a Morphine concert at the Giardini del Principe in Palestrina, Italy. His music and its impact has not always received the type of attention normally given to rock stars tragically struck down in their prime, let alone one this brilliant.

Best iPhone flashcard app for inputting own cards?

I am looking for a flashcard app for the iPhone, but there are a dozen options and not sufficient reviews or screenshots to really pick one, so hoping someone has experience. I am wanting a program where I can input my own cards (on a full computer, not just from the phone), one that allows creation of lists and has some sort of randomization/memorization scheme. Bonus if it allows cards to have audio, video or pictures in addition to just sound. I am fine with the cost of any of the apps and am not considering that a factor. Detailed parameters of what I'm looking for below.

Blogging the Philosophers

The Guardian's How to Believe series summarizes some great philosophical works in the reversed-date format we all know and love. Giles Frasier evaluates the lasting value of Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morals, Julian Baggini tells us what to believe about Hume's critique of religion, Mary Midgeley begrudgingly accepts the majestic contributions of Hobbes' Leviathan, and Simon Critchley throws himself into the hermeneutic circle of Heidegger's Being and Time.

The Rest of the World, One Plate at a Time

I live in the boonies, help me recreate a meal!

Recently I had a great meal at a place in Southern California. They bring out a bunch of boiled shrimp (and other assorted items) in a huge bag, covered and mixed with a spice rub. The rub consisted of a cajun mix, a lemon pepper mix, and garlic butter. Since I live very far away from this restaurant, any tips on how could I recreate this dish at home? It was very yummy!

The Maxx: An Excuse to Draw a Circle and a Triangle and Add Some Arms

Sam Kieth is an interesting guy, coming from an artistic family (including a cousin who created the animated series Cow and Chicken). His professional work has mostly been in the world of comics, though he did direct a movie for Roger Corman, entitled "Take it to the Limit" (2000), as a way "to recharge [his] batteries after the Maxx." The Maxx was a 35 issue comic (plus a few bonuses), and later animated and aired on Mtv's Oddities in the mid 1990s. (More videos inside)

yiddish for beginners

I'm noticing a pattern in some of my favorite books: Jewish-American immigrants tell their story by writing a novel (novel within a novel). The History of Love, Everything is Illuminated, Kavalier and Clay (narrators write comic book, not novel). What should be next on my reading list?
