What Happens When A Restaurant Dies

Before anyone posts any more comments about restaurant closings, watch a grown man break down in public as he recounts how 12 years ago he hung up the very pictures he now has to take off the walls.
Arrogant Swine proprietor and pitmaster Tyson Ho discusses what happens when a restaurant (not his!) closes its doors for the final time as part of a series on opening a barbeque restaurant in Brooklyn.

S is for Stand, Still, Stay, Silent and especially Sundberg

"Stand Still, Stay Silent" is the follow-up to Minna Sundberg's successful webcomic "A Redtail's Dream" (previously), but instead of a 550 page Finnish fantasy tale, it's a post-apocalyptic but still very Scandinavian story intended to run for years. After 10 months of almost-every-weekday pages, she has taken a short break for the end of 'Book One' and it's a good time to catch up. (SPOILERS INSIDE, but reading from the beginning is still strongly recommended)

I'm going to Powell's this weekend (yay!) and having recently come to face the fact that I'll never make any recipes out of at least half the cookbooks I own and that I'm really simply a cookbook collector more than anything else, I may as well go all in and buy a bunch more. Please give me your favorite cookbook recommendations! Specifics inside.

What constitutes a spoiler in FanFare?

As a general guideline for FanFare: what are the best ways for people who are both show watchers and book readers to enjoy a thread, make comments, and have engaging conversation while: 1) not ruining things for the show-only folks, or 2) having people assume that every comment made is a spoiler?

Pickles -- what did I do wrong?

I made pickles recently with this recipe, which had all the ingredients I thought would go into a good kosher dill -- garlic, dill, salt -- but they came out tasting like "bread and butter" sweet pickles, even though there's nothing sweet in the recipe. The pickles are only a few days old, but I'm familiar with the taste of both "old" and "new" kosher dills, and these were neither. What's the problem with this recipe, and how can I make a real kosher dill (without setting up a home canning operation?)

A Bit Nietzche but I'm Hoping for an Answer, Locke, Stock and Barrel.

So, I've been trying to hash out my philosophic and intangible beliefs and I realized that the only thing I really, truly connect with in a belief sense is Nothing, the dark. To be clear, I don't mean this melodramatically, I simply mean this in the sense that I find the fact that when I close my eyes at night that the idea that, as Roger Ebert put it, "I was perfectly content before I was born" comes to mind. That there is more that does not exist in this world than does. From John Locke (blank slate ideas) to Nietzche and religion, can you good people point me very broadly in the direction of thoughts on the nothing that surrounds us? Thanks!

Tencent Maps, China's Answer to Google Streetview

Tencent Maps - Look at some of the remotest parts of China. While some of the off-the-beaten-path images on Tencent Maps are actually static panoramas, other more quirky routes offer full coverage for mile after mile, as seen on the Li river in Guangxi province where you can cruise on a boat amidst the famous karst peaks that don’t look like any other hill or mountain range you’ve ever seen before.

Some sort of... robot... cop

"Our RoboCop Remake is a crowd-sourced film project based on the 1987 Paul Verhoeven classic. Connected through various filmmaking channels ... we're 50 filmmakers (amateur and professional) from Los Angeles and New York who have split the original RoboCop into individual pieces and have remade the movie ourselves. Not necessarily a shot-for-shot remake, but a scene-for-scene retelling. As big fans of the original RoboCop, and as filmmakers and film fans admittedly rolling our eyes at the Hollywood remake machine, we've elected to do this remake thing our own way ... Because if anyone is going to ruin RoboCop, it's us. Extremely not safe for work.

A lion told her to walk away, and she did.

"Can we talk about Susan’s fabulous adventures after Narnia? The ones where she wears nylons and elegant blouses when she wants to, and short skirts and bright lipstick when she wants to, and hiking boots and tough jeans and big men’s plaid shirts when she feels like backpacking out into the mountains and remembering what it was to be lost in a world full of terrific beauty— I know her siblings say she stops talking about it, that Susan walks away from the memories of Narnia, but I don’t think she ever really forgot."

What tabletop games are good for 2-6 people in their 20s?

In our house, we frequently spend evenings hanging out and doing low-key group activities, like playing video games (or D&D), watching TV, or just talking and listening to music. Frequently, we find ourselves at a lull, seeking something new to do when we don't feel like putting on Netflix. I'm looking for games that we can set up, teach people, and play quickly with a varying number of people at varying levels of sobriety. (more inside)

What is writing? Words that stay.

A YouTube user has uploaded an earlier cut of Jim Henson and Frank Oz's The Dark Crystal (with characters designed by Brian Froud). Some scenes are re-ordered, there is some different dialogue and the narration has been removed. It didn't perform well in testing, so changes were made to the version we all know and love. A threatened sequel, to be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, is on hold.
