I feel like this was targeted directly at me. I've read the articles about the controversy over whether Homer could see all of the colors we can (tl;dr, he could, it's a language thing), and listened to the fascinating Radio Lab and Invisibilia episodes about it. I'm a huge fan of antique technology and I'm fascinated by the story of the snail and the dye and everything.
So I was in Earnest Reading Mode and all my defenses were down when I came to the last line and it almost killed me. I was stricken with helpless laughter so hard I think I injured something in my trachea.

I learned it as "slurple" (probably from some book of collected jokes for geeky kids like me) when I was a wee strap of a lad, with zero knowledge - until today - of the Roger Miller tune.

I like the spectographic distinction between violet, light within a particular band of wavelengths in the visible spectrum, and purple, a combination of red and blue light (each of those being light within a band etc.) . But I can’t find a spectrogram of violets to establish which they actually are.

Given that flower petal colours are created subtractively rather than additively, and given that it takes less chemistry to subtract a narrow band of wavelengths than to subtract everything except a narrow band, I would expect them to be purple.
They might even be subtracting less of the spectrum than at first seems likely. Here are some results for a different species of purple flower that might be of interest: Floral Colours and The Physiology of Vision, C.V. Raman, 1963
