Looking for a particular Orwell reflection on colonialism and economics

Can anyone find a passage in George Orwell's essays where he argues that Britain will have to get used to a lower standard of living following the end of its colonial empire? The excellent AA recalled such a reflection in a thread on degrowth, but none of us have yet sourced it.

Looking for an older anime about a mad scientist and sharks

I'm trying to find an anime I started watching back in the 1990s, but can't identify now. What I recall: 1) An opening scene involving a global crisis, the climax of which had a very sad mad scientist explaining why the world was doomed. 2) A shift to underwater scenes with relatively cheerful sharks.

Who asked, "Why don't they remake *bad* movies?"

I remember reading a major film critic complaining about Hollywood remakes of fine films, then asking a good question. "Why doesn't Hollywood remake *bad* movies instead?"

A repossessing academic memories novel?

There's a recent short novel taking place in the near future, where authorities can repossess people's memories for failure to pay their student loans, and I'll be damned if I can recall either title or author.

Looking for a funny quote mocking Calvin Coolidge

I'm trying to source a remembered slam on American president Calvin Coolidge and am striking out. To paraphrase from memory: in honor of George Washington's achievements, we erected a shining monument straight up into the sky. For president Coolidge and his lack of achievements, we should instead dig a hole down into the Earth so deep there needs to be guard rails to keep people from falling in.

How many university textbooks are open?

Is anyone tracking how many educational materials are in open formats, a/k/a OER?

Looking for a visualization of highspeed railroad deployment by nation

About a year ago I found an excellent visualization, then failed to save it and can't find the blessed thing. It was an animated graph of how different nations deployed new highspeed railroad capacity. As a graph, the vertical axis was for various nations (China, Japan, Germany, etc) and the horizontal represented mileage (or total kilometers).

Is there a self-description protocol emerging for videoconferencing?

This week I watched a webinar with an unusual feature. Every speaker (there were three of four) introduced themselves the usual way: name, title, relevance to topic. Then they each described their visual appearance: hair, skin, clothing, and what could be seen in the Zoom window (desk, background, etc). "I have blond hair and am wearing a blue blazer," and so forth. It took each one perhaps 15 seconds to do this. Is this a new protocol for live video events? Is it aimed at users with visual disabilities?

Which AI project should my students attempt?

I'm teaching a summer graduate school class on emerging technologies for education. I'm planning on having students not only use, read about, and discuss each technology, but also try their hands at making with the tech. Which AI project or package would be best?

How many Nazis are there in the United States?

I've been trying to get a rough number about the number of Nazis in the US, but have not succeeded. The Southern Poverty Law Center and the ADL do track American neoNazis, but don't publish estimates of their total population, or even of most of their subgroups and splinter parties.

What would you ask Bill McKibben?

What interview questions should I ask Bill McKibben? I'm interviewing him for our community blog, and would like to do this well.
