Do I need an acoustic guitar humidifier, or will it hurt?

I have a nearly 50 year old Guild D-35 that was passed down to me from my father about 10 years ago. For those 10 years I've kept it in its case and barely played it, but I've been feeling the itch to get back into playing. I took it out, tuned and noodled around and it's still in great shape. It's never had a humidifier placed in the case, although it was kept in Florida for most of its life, so would have been generally in a high humidity environment. Does it make any sense to add one now?

Masking and vax proof, Rome 2023 edition

I'm going to be travelling internationally, to Rome, for the first time since the pandemic, right at the New Year. It looks like all testing requirements have been lifted at the border crossings into the EU, and there are no mask requirements for public transit in Rome, but what's the general vibe otherwise?

One weird trick to eliminate student loans through home refinancing

You are not my financial advisor. Apart from that imagine I were to do this: Wait until I have enough equity in my house and the interest rates are more favorable, do a cash-out refinance of my mortgage and use the cash to pay off my ~70k in student loans. What could go wrong? Is this somehow illegal?

Reusing a stockpot after indigo dye

My dear wife used one of our big stainless steel stockpots to make indigo tie-dye shirts with our nephew. He loves his shirt, they had lots of fun. Afterwards I scrubbed the pot clean with barkeepers friend and soap and put it back in the cabinet. But wife took it back out because she thinks it's no longer foodsafe after the indigo dying process. Is it safe?

Recent great works in "continental" philosophy

I'd love to hear what's been happening in the tradition of philosophy that diverged in the first decades of the 20th century over Hegel and followed the phenomenological school into what we now call "continental philosophy". What are the folks of the most recent generation(s), say thinkers and professors under 50, doing in this space?

Quirky, Indie Greeting Cards

I hate most greeting cards with a passion. So kitschy! So middlebrow! Suppose I've exhausted all my Rifle Paper Company and David Shrigley options over the years. Where else can I find well-designed cards that are not the usual Hallmark schlock?

Improve credit score by paying rent? Does it work?

There are a couple of apps/websites out there, like pinch and renttrack that claim that if I set up my rent payments to go through them they'll report that to the 3 major credit agencies and that this will likely have a positive impact on my credit. Is this for real?

Espadrilles that won't fall apart

In the summer I like to wear alpargatas/espadrilles, but the Tom's canvas alpargatas I bought in late-May have already begun to fall apart. Any recommendations for sturdy, well-constructed espadrilles/alpargatas that won't fall apart? (note: not boat shoes)

Navigating my wild thicket of taxes

You are not my accountant, but I'm trying to figure out whether I need a tax preparer, or whether software based services like turbo tax can help me navigate the rough and choppy seas of my tax nightmare.

Fresh guajillo chiles in NYC?

I'm experimenting with hot sauce recipes and I'd like to try using fresh guajillo chiles instead of dried ones. I'll be in NYC this weekend and figure if I'm going to find them anywhere on the east coast it will be there. But where, there?

AlgorithmFilter: Why not use Bayes to deal with online harassment?

Isn't Bayesian filtering the already-existing solution to online harassment on a medium like Twitter?

How does a millenial pay for cancer, in Florida, without insurance?

My brother has been diagnosed with an acute form of leukemia, and is currently in the ICU. What we know is that he's not going to die tonight. He's got some life left in him. They're not sure about the precise form yet, that will take some time. But in the meantime, we have a problem: he's 31, recently unemployed, and uninsured. My family is far from being able to afford out of pocket health costs. And from all the doctors, drugs, machines he's been hooked up to in the past 10 hours, I know the bill is already creeping into the many tens of thousands of dollars. So my question to MeFites is: what are our options? How do we pay for this? We have very few assets, although I'm sure we'd sell the family home to keep my brother alive for a few more years. But apart from that, we've got nothing substantial. (I'm a graduate student, and my mother is a self-employed seamstress. My father is unemployed). Are there any gov't programs available? Can he go on Medicaid? Etc. I'm having trouble finding hard info on people in his particular situation (not a minor, not elderly, and diagnosed with cancer). Help!
